Jointly sponsored by the Center for South and Southeast Asian Studies of the University of Michigan and the Environment and Policy Institute (EAPI) of the East-West Center in Honolulu, the conference was attended by fifteen scholars from six Asian and Pacific countries including the United States (see list of participants in the Appendix). This conference was the second in a series of conferences dealing with key issues in the human ecology of Southeast Asia jointly sponsored by the East-West Center and the University of Michigan. The proceedings of the first conference, held in Honolulu in 1983, have been published in Cultural Values and Human Ecology in Southeast Asia as Number 27 in the series Michigan Papers on South and Southeast Asia. Like the first conference, which focused on the relationship between cultural values and tropical ecology, this meeting was planned to bring together Asian scholars working in member projects of the Southeast Asian Universities Agroecosystem Network (SUAN) with scholars in Western institutions who share their concern with developing human ecology research in the region. The purpose of the conference was to explore the ecological ramifications of ethnicity in Southeast Asia. This topic was chosen under the assumption that the high degree of ethnic diversity historically evident in the region and its continuing importance under contemporary conditions is related to both the nature of tropical Asian environments on the one hand, and the nature of Southeast Asian political systems and the ways in which they manipulate natural resources on the other. Although the emphasis of the conference series is on developing improved theoretical understandings of human-environment interactions, it should be evident that the topics selected for discussion also have great practical significance. Scholars representing a broad range of theoretical perspectives and working with an even wider range of ethnic groups and environments were invited. This diversity is reflected in the resulting papers although, unfortunately, the range is narrower than it was in the conference itself. This reflects the fact that a XI Preface number of participants, for a variety of reasons outside the control of the editors, elected not to submit their papers for publication in this volume. All the chapters have been significantly revised following the conference, in many cases taking alternative perspectives presented by other participants into account in the process. The editors have sought to impdse a common format while trying to preserve as much as possible the unique qualities of the individual papers. Funding for the conference was provided by the East-West Center and the University of Michigan. Hutterer Kathleen Gillogly Its vast human diversity—racial, linguistic, and cultural—has made Southeast Asia simultaneously the ethnographer's heaven and the ethnologist's purgatory. Simply describing the multitude of different peoples inhabiting the region has kept several generations of field workers gainfully employed, with results that threaten to swamp all but the largest library collections. As a conse- quence of this activity, it is fair to say that Southeast Asia is now at least as well known ethnographically as any world region with the exception of Native North America. Unfortunately, ethnologists have not enjoyed great success in imposing clas- sificatory order on the diversity revealed by the work of the ethnographers. The culture-area approach, still the standard framework for ordering New World ethnology, was not a conspicuous success when applied to Southeast Asia (Bacon 1946; Kroeber 1947; Narroll 1950). To dichotomize the multitudinous groups in the area into upland swidden farming tribesmen and lowland wet rice farming peasants (Burling 1965) radically oversimplifies reality. Attempts to retain complexity, as in the ethnolinguistic classification employed by LeBar, Hickey, and Musgrave (1964), lack any systematic basis for differentiating between groups. As Yengoyan points out in his chapter in this volume, ethnographers have tended to "divide and subdivide groups into finer categories whose exist- ence is highly suspect." The ad hoc character of ethnic classifications in Southeast Asia reflects, in our view, the continuing theoretical underdevelopment of area studies. Rather than evolving out of a vigorous confrontation between ethnographic observations and general anthropological theory, as was the case in New World ethnological Rambo, Hutterer, Gillogly classifications, the schemes employed in Southeast Asia have usually been imported ones. Unlike the American culture-area classification schemes, which are based upon a complex set of theoretical explanations for ethnic differentia- tion (adaptation to common environmental factors within each area plus diffu- sion across area boundaries), most of the schemes employed in Southeast Asia have assumed that diversity is explainable in terms of a single cause. O. tenuiflorum O. americanum Lamiales: Lamiaceae Prepared: 2008 General Production Information Yearly production: Approximately 450 acres % of crop for fresh market: 100% % of crop grown for retail market: 10 % % of crop grown for wholesale market: 90 % Production Regions The majority of basil production occurs in the southern New Jersey counties of Atlantic (100 acres), Cumberland (225 acres), and Gloucester (50 acres). There is some basil production in the central counties of Monmouth, Ocean, and Burlington, amounting to less than 50 acres. Soils in southern and much of central New Jersey are light, ranging from sand to sandy loam with some areas of silt loam. Basil production in the southern region extends from early April to October. In this region, basil is predominantly grown for the wholesale market, with plant stems generally cut or pulled, washed and bundled in 12-15 plant or stem bunches. Wholesale units are 15-count (bunch) crates. Some basil in this region is produced for the retail market and sold at farm stands or directly to restaurants. In this case, basil is generally sold by the bunch. In the northern counties of Hunterdon, Mercer, Morris, Warren, and Sussex, many growers produce basil, but on minimal acreage. Soils in the northern region are typically Piedmont (heavy silt loams) and Appalachian (shaley) soils. The field season begins in mid-May here, and continues until cold weather terminates production. In the north, basil is grown exclusively for retail at farm stands and at community-sponsored farmers markets. Typical growers in this region produce less than one half acre of basil.

Zhu, e-mail [email protected]; Fax no.: 86-871-5160916 Abstract Complete floristic and vegetation surveys were done in a newly established nature reserve on a tropical mountain in southern Yunnan. Three vegetation types in three altitudinal zones were recognized: a tropical seasonal rain forest below 1,100 m; a lower montane evergreen broad- leaved forest at 1,100-1,600 m; and a montane rain forest above 1,600 m. A total of 1,657 species of seed plants in 758 genera and 146 families were recorded from the nature reserve. Tropical families (61%) and genera (81%) comprise the majority of the flora, and tropical Asian genera make up the highest percentage, showing the close affinity of the flora with the tropical Asian (Indo-Malaysia) flora, despite the high latitude (22N). Floristic changes with altitude are conspicuous. The transition from lowland tropical seasonal rain forest dominated by mixed tropical families to lower montane forest dominated by Fagaceae and Lauraceae occurs at 1,100-1,150 m. Although the middle montane forests above 1,600 m have ‘oak-laurel’ assemblage characteristics, the temperate families Magnoliaceae and Cornaceae become dominant.

However, its biological efects including in vivo embryonic toxicity and tissue regenerative properties are relatively unknown. The purpose of this study was to determine zebrafsh (Danio rerio) embryo toxicities and caudal fn tissue regeneration in the presence of P. sarmentosum aqueous extracts. The phytochemical components and antioxidant activity of the extract were studied using GC–MS analysis and DPPH assay, respectively. Embryo toxicity tests involving survival, heartbeat, and morphological analyses were conducted to determine P. sarmentosum extract toxicity (0–60 µg/mL); concentrations of 0–400 µg/mL of the extract were used to study tissue regeneration in the zebrafsh caudal fn. The extract contained several phytochemicals with antioxidant activity and exhibited DPPH scavenging activity (IC50 = 50.56 mg/mL). Embryo toxicity assays showed that a concentration of 60 μg/mL showed the highest rates of lethality regardless of exposure time. Slower embryogenesis was observed at 40 µg/mL, with non-viable embryos frst detected at 50 µg/mL. Extracts showed signifcant diferences (p < 0.01) for tissue regeneration at all concentrations when compared to non-treated samples. In conclusion, Piper sarmentosum extracts accelerated tissue regeneration, and extract concentrations at 60 µg/mL showed the highest toxicity levels for embryo viability.

Geographical Information System (GIS) analysis were used to evaluate the potential flood risk areas. Some of the causative factors for flooding in watershed are taken into account such as maximum rainfall per six (6) hours and terrain. At the end of the study, a map of flood risk areas was generated and validated. 1. The topmost canopy was formed by Quercus lineata, Lithocarpus pachyphyllus, Quercus lamellosa, Castanopsis tribuloides while the second layer was formed by Symplocos lucida, Caruga pinnata. The highest adult tree species were recorded of Elaeocarpus sikkimensis (119 ind/ha) followed by Daphne sp. (56 ind/ha) and Eurya acuminata (46 ind/ha). The IVI for adult tree were highest of Elaeocarpus sikkimensis (19.4) followed by Eurya acuminata was highest for herbs (1.66), trees (1.54) and shrubs (1.19). Raunkiaer’s life (׳and Castanopsis hystrix (13.1). The species diversity (H (17.1) form assessment showed phanerophytes as the largest life forms (44.85%) followed by Chamaephytes (32.35%) and Geophytes (14.70%) indicating the prevalence of a phanerophytic phytoclimate in Fambong lho wildlife sanctuary (WS). The poor regeneration of oak as compared to Eurya acuminata (50.9 ind/ha), Symplocos lucida (30.9 ind/ha) indicates a high chances of change in species compositon and vegetation structure in the future. 1. Those located between Sumatra and the Malay Peninsula are all Malayic-speaking. Information about their speech is paltry and scattered; while starting points are provided in publications such as Skeat and Blagden (1906), Kähler (1946a, b, 1960), Sopher (1977: 178–180), Kadir et al. (1986), Stokhof (1987), and Collins (1988, 1995), a comprehensive account and description of Malayic Sea Tribe lects has not been provided to date. This study brings together disparate sources, including a bit of original research, to sketch a unified linguistic picture and point the way for further investigation. While much is still unknown, this paper demonstrates relationships within and between individual Sea Tribe varieties and neighbouring canonical Malay lects. It is proposed that Sea Tribe lects can be assigned to four groupings: Kedah, Riau Islands, Duano, and Sekak.
