Jones, Part 1 of 2 ) 1—14, 2012 The Work of Tom Farrell and Lowell Jones in Topology and Geometry James F. Davis∗ Tom Farrell and Lowell Jones caused a paradigm shift in high-dimensional topology, away from the view that high-dimensional topology was, at its core, an algebraic subject, to the current view that geometry, dynamics, and analysis, as well as algebra, are key for classifying manifolds whose fundamental group is infinite. Their collaboration produced about fifty papers over a twenty-five year period. In this tribute for the special issue of Pure and Applied Mathematics Quarterly in their honor, I will survey some of the impact of their joint work and mention briefly their individual contributions – they have written about one hundred non-joint papers. 1 Setting the stage arXiv:1006.1489v2 [math.GT] 8 Aug 2010 In order to indicate the Farrell–Jones shift, it is necessary to describe the situation before the onset of their collaboration. This is intimidating – during the period of twenty-five years starting in the early fifties, manifold theory was perhaps the most active and dynamic area of mathematics. There is an existence question – when is there a closed manifold within a particular homotopy type, and a uniqueness question, what is the classification of manifolds within a homotopy type? The fifties were the foundational decade of manifold theory. -

To start with, the one-to-one correspondence be- tween linear relativistic field equations and unitary representations of the isometry group is reviewed. In turn, the method of induced representa- tions reduces the problem of classifying the representations of the Poincar´e group ISO(D 1, 1) to the classification of the representations of the sta- − bility subgroups only. Therefore, an exhaustive treatment of the two most important classes of unitary irreducible representations, corresponding to massive and massless particles (the latter class decomposing in turn into the “helicity” and the “infinite-spin” representations) may be performed via the well-known representation theory of the orthogonal groups O(n) (with D 4 <n<D ). Finally, covariant field equations are given for each − unitary irreducible representation of the Poincar´egroup with non-negative arXiv:hep-th/0611263v2 13 Jun 2021 mass-squared. Tachyonic representations are also examined. All these steps are covered in many details and with examples. The present notes also include a self-contained review of the representation theory of the general linear and (in)homogeneous orthogonal groups in terms of Young diagrams. -

Appendix A Group Theory This appendix is a survey of only those topics in group theory that are needed to understand the composition of symmetry transformations and its consequences for fundamental physics. It is intended to be self-contained and covers those topics that are needed to follow the main text. Although in the end this appendix became quite long, a thorough understanding of group theory is possible only by consulting the appropriate literature in addition to this appendix. In order that this book not become too lengthy, proofs of theorems were largely omitted; again I refer to other monographs. From its very title, the book by H. Georgi [211] is the most appropriate if particle physics is the primary focus of interest. The book by G. Costa and G. Fogli [102] is written in the same spirit. Both books also cover the necessary group theory for grand unification ideas. A very comprehensive but also rather dense treatment is given by [428]. Still a classic is [254]; it contains more about the treatment of dynamical symmetries in quantum mechanics. Those that play a prominent role in physics are defined in the following. For example, Di Martino and et al. [39] established a useful connection between generation of groups by conjugate elements and the existence of elements representable by almost cyclic matrices. Their motivation was to study irreducible projective representations of the sporadic simple groups. In view of applications, it is often important to exhibit generating pairs of some special kind, such as generators carrying a geometric meaning, generators of some prescribed order, generators that offer an economical presentation of the group. -

2 Lie groups and algebraic groups. 2.1 Basic Definitions. In this subsection we will introduce the class of groups to be studied. We first recall that a Lie group is a group that is also a differentiable manifold 1 and multiplication (x, y xy) and inverse (x x ) are C1 maps. My favourite book “Abstract Harmonic Analysis” [1] by Ed Hewitt and Ken Ross contains both a proof of the Pontryagin-van Kampen Duality Theorem for locally compact abelian groups and the structure theory of locally compact abelian groups. Walter Rudin’s book “Fourier Analysis on Groups” [2] includes an elegant proof of the Pontryagin-van Kampen Duality Theorem. Much gentler than these is “Introduction to Topological Groups” [3] by Taqdir Husain which has an introduction to topological group theory, Haar measure, the Peter-Weyl Theorem and Duality Theory. Of course the book “Topological Groups” [4] by Lev Semyonovich Pontryagin himself was a tour de force for its time. P. S. Aleksandrov, V.G. Boltyanskii, R.V. Gamkrelidze and E.F. Mishchenko described this book in glowing terms: “This book belongs to that rare category of mathematical works that can truly be called classical - books which retain their significance for decades and exert a formative influence on the scientific outlook of whole generations of mathematicians”. The final book I mention from my graduate studies days is “Topological Transformation Groups” [5] by Deane Montgomery and Leo Zippin which contains a solution of Hilbert’s fifth problem as well as a structure theory for locally compact non-abelian groups. -

The main subjects are the theory of grav- ity and matter fields in spaces provided with off–diagonal metrics and asso- ciated anholonomic frames and nonlinear connection structures, the algebra and geometry of distinguished anisotropic Clifford and spinor spaces, their extension to spaces of higher order anisotropy and the geometry of gravity and gauge theories with anisotropic spinor variables. The book summarizes the authors’ results and can be also considered as a pedagogical survey on the mentioned subjects. ii - iii ABOUT THE AUTHORS Sergiu Ion Vacaru was born in 1958 in the Republic of Moldova. He was educated at the Universities of the former URSS (in Tomsk, Moscow, Dubna and Kiev) and reveived his PhD in theoretical physics in 1994 at ”Al. I. Cuza” University, Ia¸si, Romania. He was employed as principal senior researcher, as- sociate and full professor and obtained a number of NATO/UNESCO grants and fellowships at various academic institutions in R. Moldova, Romania, Germany, United Kingdom, Italy, Portugal and USA. He has published in English two scientific monographs, a university text–book and more than hundred scientific works (in English, Russian and Romanian) on (super) gravity and string theories, extra–dimension and brane gravity, black hole physics and cosmolgy, exact solutions of Einstein equations, spinors and twistors, anistoropic stochastic and kinetic processes and thermodynamics in curved spaces, generalized Finsler (super) geometry and gauge gravity, quantum field and geometric methods in condensed matter physics. -

Lie Algebras of Generalized Quaternion Groups Samantha Clapp Advisor: Dr. Brandon Samples Abstract Every finite group has an associated Lie algebra. Its Lie algebra can be viewed as a subspace of the group algebra with certain bracket conditions imposed on the elements. If one calculates the character table for a finite group, the structure of its associated Lie algebra can be described. In this work, we consider the family of generalized quaternion groups and describe its associated Lie algebra structure completely. 1 Introduction The Lie algebra of a group is a useful tool because it is a vector space where linear algebra is available. It is interesting to consider the Lie algebra structure associated to a specific group or family of groups. A Lie algebra is simple if its dimension is at least two and it only has f0g and itself as ideals. Some examples of simple algebras are the classical Lie algebras: sl(n), sp(n) and o(n) as well as the five exceptional finite dimensional simple Lie algebras. A direct sum of simple lie algebras is called a semi-simple Lie algebra. Therefore, it is also interesting to consider if the Lie algebra structure associated with a particular group is simple or semi-simple. In fact, the Lie algebra structure of a finite group is well known and given by a theorem of Cohen and Taylor [1]. In this theorem, they specifically describe the Lie algebra structure using character theory. That is, the associated Lie algebra structure of a finite group can be described if one calculates the character table for the finite group.
