ABSTRACT This thesis is a comparative analysis of representations of the African American fife and drum musical tradition in North Mississippi, tracing the ways these represen- tations are shaped by the ideologies, aims, methods, and social positions of the per- son(s) in primary control of representation. It includes the exploration and interpreta- tion of audio recordings (including music, graphic presentation, and album copy), video, and film representations. African American fife and drum music is rooted in cross-cultural exchanges of folklore, melody, lyrical text, and instrumentation between African and Anglo Ameri- cans dating back to the American Revolutionary War in the United States. -

1 Real Rap, Does Authenticity Even Matter in Hip Hop? Amin Allam Arcadia University In partial fulfillment of the Degree Requirement for the Bachelor’s of International Studies 2021 REAL RAP, DOES AUTHENTICTY EVEN MATTER IN HIP HOP? 2 Abstract Rap and Hip hop has evolved tremendously since its inception. The collective genre has been catapulted to global influence, where in the United States it represents the largest genre based on market share. After reviewing the history of rap music there is a perceived relationship between hip hop and authenticity. To which the question arose of whether hip hop could maintain authenticity in a commercial sphere. To explore this relationship, after reviewing the literature on authenticity, a model of analysis created by Newman and Smith was used to explore 5years worth of data dealing with the Billboard top 100 list. The finds suggest that hip hop has varying degrees of authenticity, but typically authenticity on the higher end coincides with commercial reception as artists who are more authentic boost sales prospects for later works. This relationship is important to explore as it paints a picture for how authentic voices are able to be heard. In my lifetime I have been able to witness numerous artists such as Meek Mill, Lil Uzi Vert, and PNB Rock rise to the national stage of musical recognition. In my circles Hip Hop held supreme importance as we would listen to various artists and analyze their rhetoric, hear their stories, and take notes on messages which spoke to us. -

According to Songfacts, there were prominent fountains there. The band was formed by Schlesinger and Chris Collingwood. The band name was taken from the name of a lawn-ornament store in Wayne, New Jersey, not far from Montclair, New Jersey, the hometown of the band's bassist and cofounder Adam Schlesinger (it has since gone out of business). According to Songfacts, there were prominent fountains there. The band was formed by Schlesinger and Chris Collingwood. The two first met as freshmen at Williams College and began playing music together in various bands. The two eventually went their separate ways with Collingwood forming the Mercy Buckets in Boston and Schlesinger forming Ivy in New York City.
