1 GVV&CVC President Steve’s

chat column………………………

Well here it is again. I warned everyone that Christmas was coming and here we are slap bang in the middle of it. I hope you are all enjoying good health and are comfortable in life, able to share the spir- it of Christmas and can be with your loved ones. It’s probably a good time to look back over this year and see how our club has been travelling. We’ve had some interesting runs, the restoration team has had some challenges and made great progress and we’ve had one of most successful swap meets. We have subtly changed the way we do some things and have achieved great results. In all I would say it has been a very good year. But what now of the future. The matter of our club house is still eluding us although I think we could be closer than ever before. Maybe we have over expectations but when I became president I was giving a brief of what we wanted to achieve and it is that I’ve worked toward. Discussions are still proceeding but now on a number of fronts and we will see what seems to be the best for the club. In the meantime let’s spare a thought for those that are not so well off like the people in the fire area of California. We all know the devastation of fire after Pinery, Samson Flat and so many others we have experienced. Please let us all be vigilant this summer. May I now wish you and your families a very happy and safe Christmas and a fun filled New Year. May the power be with you Steve Salisbury

Big ones helping little ones.

One might think of a club as being only dedicated to its own goings on but not always. The Gawler Car Club with over 600 members has emerged as a large interactive club that crosses individuality and participates with many other unlike clubs and associations.

Recently members took their classic cars out for a run to Blanchetown and were hosted by the Blanchetown Pistol Club. The pistol club educated the car club members on the pistol shooting sport and allowed those, who wished, to try their hand at target shooting. Most thought that their car would still be their passion but were pleased to have the opportunity to learn about the Blanchetown Club. The Gawler Car Club was pleased to help another club to raise some funds and learn a little about other South Australians and their pastimes.

In these times of great self-centeredness the Gawler Car club is proud to be able to interact with many diversified entities and help where possible. With its large membership and over 500 historically registered vehicles ,it can provide a presence and spectacle at all sorts of events.

Members participate in South Australian history events, raise funds for natural disasters, conduct a men’s shed dedicated to restor- ing old vehicles as well as providing venues for service clubs to raise funds for their particular projects. All this is done without grants and little to no help from Government instrumentals , here’s cheers to a great comradery club 2 Most runs commence at the North end of Princes Park , Nixon Terrace ,Gawler. All Club Meetings will be held in the Gawler Sport and Community Centre Nixon Tce Gawler on 3rd Tuesday of the month at 7.pm. Members please note --Events may be altered at times due to unforeseen circumstances and any changes will be advised at the Club Meeting and on E-Torque

3 Contact with the Maralinga personnel was frequent as Yalata staff were responsible for the safety of the aboriginal population there. In November 1959 there was a spe- cial day when we flew to Maralinga to be entertained (in style) by the Commanding Officers of the base in recognition of the assistance given.

During Erwin’s time at Colona station, he sowed and reapt what was then considered the “furthest West crop of oats” - all done with salvaged and borrowed machinery that deserved to be in a museum. The hay was loaded on to a Reo truck (formerly from the Karoonda Farm) and stacked for a treat for the horses used for mustering on the station.

Jaguar workshop restoration project update

The main panels of the Jag have now been primed and sealed ready to be moved to our new workshop facility. Member Kevin Geister had his first go at spray painting and did very well picking up some tips from the more experienced painters on hand. Kevin is preparing to complete the painting of his 1972 HQ Premier Sedan and is gaining experience at the club work- shops. Rust & paint removal of other parts of the MK V is still progressing. We also had a demonstration of the KBS fuel tank sealing kit on Trevor Norris’ MK 2 tank. The kit comes with in- structions and a complete set of products, starting with a clean & flush with AquaKlean, then a zinc coating of RustBlast fol- lowed by the Gold Standard tank sealer. The product is Aus- tralian made & owned similar to the American POR 15 range. We will check out the result at the next workshop. See you at the next Workshop!!! TRUN

Mannum All Steamed Up run…………………..…...Sunday 18th November, 2018

A very interesting Run. Most assem- bled at the usual start point at 9:00 for 9:30 leave and some made their own way to Mannum and all assembled at the Liberty Servo. We followed in convoy as directed down to the riverfront where our cars were to be displayed. We had around 40 attend- ing and made a vary interesting and varied car display surrounded by stalls, displays and other interesting vehicles. There were two beautifully restored veterans on display, a little Renault Road- ster and larger Vulcan. There was a great assortment of steam boats from large Paddle steamers to tiny steam powered boats and every size in be- tween. Nice warm day, with the “Little Badger” out the frontof the Picture theatre , ( many thanks again to our tireless worker Wolfgang) being admired by those who had not seen her and those who were seeing her again. Thank you to the people who attended the viewing , you came from Country Music Clubs, other car clubs, Gawler 4wd club and even from Copper Hill Station which is near Marla, a thousand kms away. 96 attended and I believe all that were there, enjoyed the event.

Helen Hamp, a daughter of Tom and Valma Kruse, was invited to give a talk on her Dad, this she did in an entertaining and interesting way. Helen also donated a DVD and a bottle of wine to be given to the occupiers of 2 “lucky” seats.

Our resident “ARTIST” Bruce Williams, had two paintings to present to Helen, one of the Ford Blitz truck, the other, the well known “BADGER”. I was asked to present these to Helen and I was pleased to do so. Barbara and I had known Tom and Valma for some years, through country music and I have fond memories of chatting to Tom about the “good old days”. I am most pleased and proud of the efforts from Gavin and myself and also the successful outcome, . We have shown in recent times with this event and Barbara’s dance, that we are not only a club for members , but also instigate, organise and share community events. A big thank you to Joy , John and Brian at the Gawler Cinemas who were a tremendous help to Gavin and me. 11 The Club was most privileged to have Tom Kruse daughter Helen and family at our Sunday film matinee , where Helen spoke of her memories of Tom and the making of the film The Back of Beyond.

I'm Helen, one of Tom Kruse daughters and I'd like to share some of his story with you... Esmond Gerald (Tom) Kruse was born on 28th August 1914 at Waterloo, 75ks north of Gawler. He was the 10th child of 12 children to Ida and Henry. His father, was the town Blacksmith and Undertak- er, employing up to 11 men. Tom left school at 14. Years later he said in a letter to his mother he wished he had continued with schooling but he would learn from others. He did many jobs around the district, including sewing wheat bags and working in his father's blacksmith shop. When Tom was older he moved to Yunta to Over the years they tried many ways to beat the sandhills — work in brother Snow's garage & then eventually worked for Harry including coconut matting, but one of the best was the flattened Ding. Tom's truck driving days had begun. In those days Tom did steel plates from E&WS pipe supplied by the Government. Those station homestead mail runs & carried wool & livestock to the plates left on the sandhills would be scorching hot in summer. Yunta Railhead. Food was a priority in his life.. eat good, you work well. The temperature was 119 in the shade, I can hear Dad's words "by hell it was hot" whenever he was asked about his first trip. In 1947 Tom purchased the Marree based business with the Badg- And then in 1939 Harry sent Tom to take supplies from Abminga er truck, the blitzes, the Marree house and the mail contract from Siding (that's between Finke & Oodnadatta) to Andado Station for Harry Ding. The idea for "The Back of My cousin Joan Bell recalls the time when at 14, with her Beyond" was born and filming took 3 months. By this time Tom brother Noel ,would listen intently to the big old valve wireless to had employed men to drive the MailRun to Birdsville as he had the nightly report of Madigan's Expedition & they were delighted started a dam sinking operation. It was the first movie to integrate black and white people together. Tom did dam sinking for many, many years around the Birdsville area, with the Badger always part of his plant while Mum ran the home front in Marree with the Mail and the Shell Depot including each fortnight cooking cakes & biscuits all to go up on the Mail Truck to Birdsville for Dad. During the winter Mum, Phillip and I would spend months at a time with Dad in the camp. I did corre- spondence schooling while at the camp, Phillip roamed the sandhills and I sure hurried my school work so I could join him. Pauline did most of her primary schooling in Adelaide & eventually Pauline and I came to Adelaide for boarding school. Phillip attend- ed Goodwood Tech while Jeffery had began his schooling at Mar- ree — it was time to think of the next stage in life so in 1963 the Mail Run to Birdsville was sold — Mum moved to Adelaide to live thinking Dad was coming too. His words Tomorrow - but for him tomorrow never comes. He did dam sinking around the northeast & north of the State —he started a water carting business in Coober Pedy then got Phillip to take over as Dad still wanted to do dam sinking. One of his last job's was to clean a century of sed- iment from the Oodnadatta Railway dam & at that time he was WELL into his 70s. Over Tom's 40 years of dam sinking & earth moving he also did Oil, Gas & Mining earth works, including roads, shot lines & rig leases for the then start up Santos, now SAs largest Company. Tom loved music, he enjoyed people, he slotted into Adelaide life like a duck to water. Where ever he went he made the best of life. The Badger restoration was another story which took 3 years — most of the men working on it were in their late 70s or early 80s & now the Badger sits proudly in the Birdwood Motor Museum. Tom never received any monies from The Back of Beyond OR from any books OR any stories about him or his life. And I would just like to say - my parents way of life was no different to how your parents lived ( talking to the Car Club mem- bers at the picture theatre) , yes a different area and maybe a bit harsher conditions, that's all. And So that is MY story of Tom Kruse,...my Dad.

Our mystery run started from Princes Park ( one mem- ber had to have a push start to get going) and took us along the Sturt Hwy where we could blow the cobwebs out.

After about 15km we turned left onto the road to Freeling crossed the Thiel Hwy & drove through Freeling onto Tem- plers.

From there it was through Roseworthy and back towards Gawler where we stopped for a very nice buffet breakfast at the Willaston Hotel.

14 Lions Mallala Christmas party display ……………….Thursday, December 6, 2018

The weather was very much against us this year with the temperature at approx. 40 degrees and the organisers had decided not to have a parade any more.

Unfortunately my old MGB was not prepared for the show so Alvin took me in the Rover. (thanks Alvin) I believe we all still enjoyed ourselves and look forward to next year.

The chap who arrived in the Mustang is a potential new member with other projects to com- plete once the Mustang is sold. Regards, Colin Castanelli

15 Goodbye to past members of the Gawler Car Club by Alvin Jenkin The membership of the Gawler Veteran Vintage and Classic Vehicle Club changes from year to year as new members join, and some do not renew. None renewals may be due to members losing interest or disposing of their historic vehicles or transferring to other vehicle clubs etc, or in some cases after the passage of time, members become too old to participate in club activities. During November 2018 two past members in the last category passed away.

John Gilbert of Windsor passed away on 5th November at 85 years of age. John was a member of the GVVCVC for about 3 years using his beautifully kept Chrysler Val- iant AP6 (pictured) on club runs. John purchased this car brand new from CJ Bird, Chrysler dealer at Owen* and kept it impeccable despite using it fully, and driving it to locations that would challenge most modern drivers, as well as a tow vehicle for his caravan. I well recall John coming to me one day about 2 years ago to request a tow as he had bogged it in a sandhill at the back of Port Parham. John’s daily runners were always in impeccable condition, the car that he had before the Valiant was a Vauxhall Velox, beautifully maintained, and he purchased a late model Commodore about 3 years ago, but the Valiant remained his pride and joy. Despite not renewing club membership about 3 years ago, John maintained a strong interest in the activities of the club, and requested that I pass on a copy of the Journal after his membership ceased. He put the Valiant on full rego and would drive his wife, Ellen, in it to Port Parham every Friday night for tea at the club until he was no longer able to do so in April of this year. The family placed the Valiant on display at John’s Funeral at Shannon Cemetery on 12th November where the club’s own Mike Wil- liams officiated over the remembrance service. Our condolences to Ellen and the family at this time.

Trevor (Bill) Johnson, formerly of Pinery, passed away on 9th November at the age of 91. Bill was a keen member of the club for well over 20 years with very broad interests and he ceased to be a member in 2014. In November of that year the club did a run to his property to view his extensive collection of restored cars and tractors. His first car was a 1926 car was a 1926 Superior K which he purchased in 1946 and he always maintained an interest in , restoring several. The pride of his fleet was a very rare 210, and this was displayed at his memorial service which was held at the Pinery Hall on 15th Novem- ber. His interests in things mechanical extended over many areas and several marques, and he con- tributed a number of articles to the GVVCVC Journal over the years, and sparked the interest of others in the rare and unusual. He once offered the front axle of a Trojan for sale, and this resulted in a number of articles in the Journal about this almost unknown and peculiar vehicle with a two stroke engine. At the time of his death he had almost completed the restoration of a 1909 BSA car which has been in his family for over 100 years. Bill is the only person I know who had a copy of “The Complete Encyclopedia of Motorcars 1885 to Pre- sent” by Nick Georgano, considered to be the bible for car enthusiasts. His fleet at the time of the visit in 2014 included a 1928 Bean truck, a couple of restored vintage Chevrolets, the above mentioned Chev 210, a Mercedes Benz, the BSA, and several restored tractors, mostly John Deere but including some Case and International. The club extends sympathy to Margaret and family. Photos from left : the BSA car, some of the Tractors and one of Bills Chevrolets

16 IMarque of the month …… …...

By Richard Aspden When British Leyland sold the MG factory at Abingdon, near Oxford. in 1981. their action provoked world-wide protest and sorrow from the legion of committed MG owners and enthusiasts. Although the famous octag- onal badge can still be seen on sporty versions of the Austin Metro. a great British sportscar became only a cherished memory. The MG story began in 1924 with the collaboration between William Kimber and Morris Motors, alt- hough the *MG (Morris Garages) Car Company Ltd. was not registered until 1930. The first MGs were lightweight sportscars such as the MG Super Sports Morris, capable of a respectable 60mph. In 1928 the MG Midget appeared, at a price of only £175.00. and was soon scoring in competition. Throughout the early 1930s MG were successful in races, rallies and speed trials with their K and J types with top speeds exceeding 120mph. But in 1935 the young and vigorous company was sold by William Morris (Lord Nuffield) to the giant Morris Motors Ltd. and the firm involvement in was competi- tion promptly forbidden. From then on MGs were entered privately with only mini- mal help from the works. In 1939 `Goldie' Gardner took a highly modified stream- lined K3 of 1106cc to 204mph for the flying kilometer. Throughout this period MG had also been producing roadgoing sportscars such as the Magnette, TA and TB. After World War II, MG produced the TC followed by the TD. These classic sportscars were of instant appeal. especially to the young, and enjoyed great success in the export market to the USA. A new Magnette was launched, although this was in reality an Austin-engined Wolsey with an MG grille - an example of the 'badge engineering' which the parent company was prone to in- dulge in from time to time. In 1955 the MGA came onto the market, offering a genuine 100mph. It was a big seller in stock form and did well on the race- track, winning its class at Le Mans in 1960. In 1961 the new MG Midget, similar to the Austin-Healey Sprite also made at Abingdon. came into production, followed in 1962 by the famous MGB. With many modifica- tions and the addition of the GT. The “B” remained in production until 1980 when the financial dire straits of the parent British Leyland led to the closure and sale of the Abingdon factory.
