The 13th Annual Scarecrow Cruise & Car Show Recap Story by MCC Member – Mike Martin The thirteenth annual Scarecrow Cruise and Car Show was held on October 21 and 22, 2016 in Madison, Ms. What a good time was had by all! The Scarecrow show which began in October 2004 with a handful of cars and a handful of spectators has grown into a monumental event. Over 500 participating cars and over 20000 spectators jammed the show grounds located at the Tulane University campus at the corner of Highway 463 and Highway 51 in the middle of Madison, Ms. The event, which used to be a Saturday only event, now has become a full two day event. Cars started flowing onto the grounds early Friday morning seeking a good place to park. By late Friday most of the paved parking was full. The cars stayed overnight worry free (thanks to the security provided by the Madison Police Department who provided security from Wednesday through Saturday) drawing big crowds of people. A big tractor trailer rig owned by nationally known racer and car dealership owner Rick Hendricks came late Thursday. This rig, sponsored by long time Scarecrow sponsor Central Mississippi Chevy Dealers, had 7 of Mr. Hendrick’s personal cars including two NASCAR racers driven by Dale Earnhardt and Jeff Gordon. This collection is shown only in 3 other events each year. Many people registered on site for the Saturday event. About 60 participants took part in “Cruisin’ For Cash” in which the participants drive their classic cars to 16 different stops at various merchants in Madison, Ridgeland, and Canton. There they get a chance to win desirable prizes including $1,000 cash. Both participants and merchants love this event. This year there were events held on Friday evening that were sponsored by Mac Haik Chrysler and Chevrolet dealerships and by the Purolator Corporation wo bands were on site Bar-b-que was prepared and given to all spectators wanted to partake. Drinks came though the sponsorship of Pepsi/Brown Bottling. We were also excited to have members of the Viper Club displaying their cars. Saturday morning broke fair and warm and participating cars and spectators poured into the show grounds. There 25 regular vendors on site plus 8 food vendors all doing good business. The two charities that the Mississippi Classic Cruisers, the car club managing the event, support are SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) and Hope Hollow . Both of these organizations had vendor spots and did good business. The “Cruise” portion of the event left Reunion Subdivision out on Highway 463 about 10 miles West of Madison. The providing the DJ voice on the PA system. At about 2:30pm the individual award winners were announced with over 150 plaques given out. The 13th annual Scarecrow event was a complete success in everyone’s eyes. M thanks go to Mayor Mary Hawkins Butler and to the personnel of the City of Madison. Without their help this worthwhile event could not be pulled off. In 2003, a few members of the Mississippi Classic Cruisers had an audience with Mayor Mary about the chances of having a car show in the City of Madison. At that time Mayor Mary offered her immediate support and told that small group, “I want to have the best car show in the State of Mississippi!” Well, we know we are not the largest but we do think we are the best!
