Photographer Becomes Arch Enemy for Going After Copyright Offenders A screenshot of J Salmerón's photograph Mar 12, 2019 09:16 +08 Photographer becomes arch enemy for going after copyright offenders A photographer has been banned by a metal band after he tried to get payment for a photo of the band that was used without his permission. J Salmerón noticed that a photograph he took of Arch Enemy's frontwoman Alissa White-Gluz during a music festival in the Netherlands was being used by a clothing company called Thunderball Clothing. Writing on photography website Petapixel, Salmerón said it was clear his photo was being used to advertise for Thunderball Clothing without his permission. "In other words, this wasn’t merely a fan using the photo because they liked Arch Enemy (which I would normally tolerate), but instead a business, profiting from my work without even asking for my permission," Salmerón wrote. Salmerón went after Thunderball Clothing, asking them to pay for his image since he is the copyright owner. He said he usually charges a fee of at least €500 to businesses that have posted his work in an unauthorized manner, but he will allow Thunderball Clothing to keep the post for a donation of €100 to charity the Dutch Cancer Foundation. But the owner of Thunderball Clothing did not get back to Salmerón and instead complained to the band Arch Enemy about Salmerón sending her a "threatening" letter demanding €500. The manager of the band in turn sent a reply to the photographer, saying: "Alissa’s sponsors and fan clubs are authorized to share photos of her. Thunderball Clothing is a sponsor of Alissa and Arch Enemy." The manager said: "Generally speaking, photographers appreciate having their work shown as much as possible and we are thankful for the great photos concert photographers provide." According to their statement, the band seemed to think that because their members were in Salmerón's photos, they were able to use it however they wanted. Salmerón also revealed a system that some bands have with photographers, that the photographers are allowed to photograph the band, but are paid in “exposure,” by having the band use their work before a big audience. He named artists like Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, and The Foo Fighters as previously forcing concert photographers to sign contracts to surrender their rights over the photos they take at their concerts. The photographer later found out Arch Enemy had taken down his photo and he was banned by the band from taking photographs at their concerts. Shortly after Thunderball Clothing closed down. Its owner Marta Gabriel apologized to Salmerón and said she could not deal with the online harassment and death threats. This is not the first time Arch Enemy has banned a photographer. In 2010, the band manager's Angela Gossow banned Dutch photographer Anouk Timmerman because Timmerman asked Gossow to take down the photos that Gossow had posted without authorization on Gossow's personal website. This issue could have been settled amicably and without a lot of vitriol if all the parties understood copyright law. Not all media outlets seem to understand that, as BoingBoing wrote: "This is an interesting situation in that the scofflaws obviously can't be reasoned with, but suing the fashion designer over €500 in damages (or the band over its childish blacklisting threat) seems a pointless waste of time and energy. Sometimes the best remedy is the burning eye of Streisand." Creators spend time and energy on their work and they deserve to be compensated, and not be exploited by companies that tend to insist on "pro bono" work, or paying in terms of "exposure". Most of the time, online justice is nice but hard cash is the best payment. PitchMark deters idea theft and provides you with options if it happens. PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2007 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

Florian Heesch Voicing the Technological Body Some Musicological Reflections on Combinations of Voice and Technology in Popular Music ABSTRACT The article deals with interrelations of voice, body and technology in popular music from a musicological perspective. It is an attempt to outline a systematic approach to the history of music technology with regard to aesthetic aspects, taking the iden- tity of the singing subject as a main point of departure for a hermeneutic reading of popular song. Although the argumentation is based largely on musicological research, it is also inspired by the notion of presentness as developed by theologian and media scholar Walter Ong. The variety of the relationships between voice, body, and technology with regard to musical representations of identity, in particular gender and race, is systematized alongside the following cagories: (1) the “absence of the body,” that starts with the establishment of phonography; (2) “amplified presence,” as a signifier for uses of the microphone to enhance low sounds in certain manners; and (3) “hybridity,” including vocal identities that blend human body sounds and technological processing, where- by special focus is laid on uses of the vocoder and similar technologies. KEYWORDS recorded popular song, gender in music, hybrid identities, race in music, presence/ absence, disembodied voices BIOGRAPHY Dr. Florian Heesch is professor of popular music and gender studies at the University of Siegen, Germany. He holds a PhD in musicology from the University of Gothenburg, Sweden. He published several books and articles on music and Norse mythology, mu- sic and gender and on diverse aspects of heavy metal studies.

TRUTH CORRODED BIOGRAPHY 2018 Drums: Jake Sproule, Vocals: Jason North, Guitar: Trent Simpson, Bass: Greg Shaw, Lead Guitar: Chris Walden TRUTH CORRODED are an Australian band with a sound that captures elements of late 80's/early 90's inspired thrash and death metal, shaped by the likes of bands such as SLAYER, OBITUARY, SEPULTURA, KREATOR and EXHORDER, and then later influenced by acts such as MISERY INDEX, BEHEMOTH, NEUROSIS, DECAPITATED and REVOCATION. Taken together the influences have shaped a sound that is as confronting as the subject matter of the bands lyrics and pays homage to the go for the throat savagery of the bands roots. TRUTH CORRODED signed with leading US extreme metal label UNIQUE LEADER RECORDS which led to the release of the album titled 'Bloodlands' which was released in March 2019. Based on themes surrounding war and displacement, the album depicts the state of our times and the social and political impact that is having both in the bands home country Australia and abroad. The title refers to the growth of new conflict from conflicts past, with the suffering it creates spreading its roots. The album was recorded with session drummer Kevin Talley (SUFFOCATION, DYING FETUS, CHIMAIRA) – his third album with the band – and was mixed and mastered by renowned heavy music producer Chris 'ZEUSS' Harris (HATEBREED, SOULFLY, REVOCATION). The album also features guest appearances by Stephen Carpenter of DEFTONES, Terrance Hobbs of SUFFOCATION, Mark Kloeppel of MISERY INDEX and Ryan Knight, ex-THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER/ARSIS. Artwork for the album is designed by Gary Ronaldson at Bite Radius Designs (MISERY INDEX, BENIGHTED, PIG DESTROYER, THY ART IS MURDER) Commenting on the industry involved, vocalist Jason North offers "When we first set out to write the album we could not have imagined that we would work with the artists that have become involved.

  • Exploring the Chinese Metal Scene in Contemporary Chinese Society (1996-2015)
"THE SCREAMING SUCCESSOR": EXPLORING THE CHINESE METAL SCENE IN CONTEMPORARY CHINESE SOCIETY (1996-2015) Yu Zheng A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS December 2016 Committee: Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Esther Clinton Kristen Rudisill © 2016 Yu Zheng All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jeremy Wallach, Advisor This research project explores the characteristics and the trajectory of metal development in China and examines how various factors have influenced the localization of this music scene. I examine three significant roles – musicians, audiences, and mediators, and focus on the interaction between the localized Chinese metal scene and metal globalization. This thesis project uses multiple methods, including textual analysis, observation, surveys, and in-depth interviews. In this thesis, I illustrate an image of the Chinese metal scene, present the characteristics and the development of metal musicians, fans, and mediators in China, discuss their contributions to scene’s construction, and analyze various internal and external factors that influence the localization of metal in China. After that, I argue that the development and the localization of the metal scene in China goes through three stages, the emerging stage (1988-1996), the underground stage (1997-2005), the indie stage (2006-present), with Chinese characteristics. And, this localized trajectory is influenced by the accessibility of metal resources, the rapid economic growth, urbanization, and the progress of modernization in China, and the overall development of cultural industry and international cultural communication. iv For Yisheng and our unborn baby! v ACKNOWLEDGMENTS First of all, I would like to show my deepest gratitude to my advisor, Dr.

1 Vulgar Discourses of Power: The Discursive Construction of Ideal Heavy Metal Subjectivity and the Erasure of Black, Indigenous, and Women of Colour in Heavy Metal Music Culture By Michelle Bona A Thesis Submitted to Saint Mary’s University, Halifax, Nova Scotia in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in Women and Gender Studies April 2021, Halifax, Nova Scotia Copyright Michelle Bona, 2021 Approved: Dr. Tatjana Takševa Supervisor Approved: Dr. Jacqueline Warwick Examiner Approved: Dr. Tracy Moniz Reader Date: 23 April 2021 2 Abstract Vulgar Discourses of Power: The Discursive Construction of Ideal Heavy Metal Subjectivity and the Erasure of Black, Indigenous, and Women of Colour in Heavy Metal Music Culture By Michelle Bona Heavy metal music culture has been a bastion of working-class white masculinity since its beginnings in the early 1970s. Through canonization and Historical documentation, white male dominance has been ensured, obscuring contributions made by white female performers and erasing black, Indigenous, and women of colour (BIWoC) from the genre. Utilizing feminist critical discourse analysis (feminist CDA) to examine texts by canonized male bands reveals the discursive parameters of ideal heavy metal subjectivity (IHMS). Exploration of texts created by white female performers, including a case study of Arch Enemy vocalist Alissa White-Gluz, isolates the necessity for white female performers to reproduce the discourses of IHMS in order to secure their participation in the culture, further contributing to the erasure of BIWoC performers. However, feminist CDA also reveals transformative potential within these texts to de-centre IHMS as the default subject position and shows white women’s agency and resiliency as performers.

  • Metal, Machismo and Musical Mode: How the 'Feminine' Phrygian Second
Networking Knowledge: Journal of the MeCCSA Postgraduate Network, Vol. 4, No. 1 (2011) ARTICLE Metal, Machismo and Musical Mode: how the ‘feminine’ Phrygian second has been appropriated and transformed SARHA MOORE, University of Sheffield, UK ABSTRACT Heavy Metal music has made extensive and deliberate use of the ‘medieval modes’, particularly those starting with a semitone. Historically the second note of these modes, the Phrygian second, was deemed ‘weak’ and ‘feminine’, a far cry from the machismo of Heavy Metal. This paper describes the journey of the Phrygian mode and its semitone second note, from ancient Greek times to the present, detailing changing connotations and the consequences of these on present day Heavy Metal music. The paper will include particular discussion of how the Phrygian second supports machismo through Metal music in film, and the subgenre of Oriental Metal that can challenge the Othering of the Phrygian second. It can be argued that within Metal the Phrygian second is significant and central to its aggressive power, and that Metal has given the Phrygian second unique and innovative masculine significations that contribute new expressive aspects to the contemporary musical palette.
