  • Competition Distortions Dossier III.2018
Competition Distortions Dossier July-September, 2018 1. Milo Threatens to Sue Ovaltine over Defamatory Advertising Campaign Recently, a photo of two billboards from chocolate powder competitors, Milo and Ovaltine, went viral on social media. The Milo copy reads ‘A champion made by Milo’, while the tagline for Ovaltine reads, “As long as you enjoy it, you do not need to be champions”. The two characters in the Ovaltine banner also directly points toward the Milo banner, further strengthening the association between the two across the busy intersection. Nestle, Milo’s parent company, later sent a complaint to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Vietnam and the Vietnam Competition Authority (VCA) accusing Friesland Campina — the company that owns Ovaltine and is in charge of its communications strategy — of violating the advertising law by infringing Milo’s copyright and engaging in unfair competition. Besides the billboard, Ovaltine also released a series of advertisement posters seemingly criticising the ‘champion ethos’ that has been central to Milo’s brand identity. These posters also utilise green colour and other visual cues that are often associated with Milo’s advertisements. https://saigoneer.com https://saigoneer.com/saigon-arts-culture/arts-culture-categories/14615- milo-threatens-to-sue-ovaltine-over-defamatory-advertising-campaign C O N T E N T S Food for Thought 1. • Nestlé: Brand Alliances in Developing Markets
NESTLÉ: BRAND ALLIANCES IN DEVELOPING MARKETS Brian A. Vander Schee, Aurora University Timothy W. Aurand, Northern Illinois University Treneice Pickens, Northern Illinois University Mary Ma, Northern Illinois University Anand Ratnakar Girap, Northern Illinois University ABSTRACT Branding concepts often find a place in introductory marketing textbooks. However, given time and space considerations, covering those concepts with a comprehensive industry perspective is typically unachievable. Thus, supplementing textbook content with brief company cases can help students gain a better appreciation for the material with meaningful application. This paper presents a synopsis of brand alliance concepts appropriate for introductory marketing students. It then goes on to provide several examples of how the Nestlé Company uses these alliances as a competitive advantage particularly in developing markets. The conclusion includes questions for class discussion to stimulate further understanding and analysis of brand alliances in the marketplace. INTRODUCTION and Hartline 2010). • Food Scientists Play Pivotal Role in Nestlé's 150 Years
HISTORY Milk receiving yard at the Underwood factory in Invercargill, 1910 Food scientists play pivotal role in Nestlé’s 150 years As Nestlé celebrates 150 years, it’s a good time recognise the Highlander evolution of the company and the underlying processes that have Condensed Milk, led to Nestlé being the business it is today. 1901 and today Intensive research and testing – always In mid 1867, after intensive research and tests, Pharmacist Henri Nestlé developed an alternative source of infant nutrition for young babies unable to take breast milk. His formula was approved and tested by doctors and midwives and he continued to regularly research his products to ensure safety and quality. The invention of this life saving product led to widespread success and its use quickly extended to the elderly, unwell and infirm. Safety and quality control have always been non-negotiable priorities for Nestlé. Behind every product produced by Nestlé a team of scientists, engineers, nutritionists, regulatory specialists and consumer care representatives are focused on creating food and beverages that consumers can trust in all respects. Quality control and food safety standards are applied every step of the way, from sourcing raw materials, through every stage of manufacturing and packaging, then through to supply chain management and product storage and use. Sweet innovative success- Nestlé’s quality systems are underpinned by the most recent scientific condensed milk and chocolate knowledge; both in nutrition science and food technology. They have established what is now the world’s largest private nutrition and food In 1874, Nestlé developed its first condensed milk product to contend research organisation, employing over 5000 people across their 34 with competitor Anglo-Swiss Condensed Milk Company.

  • MKTG 3003 Brand Critique Nespresso
MKTG 3003 Brand Critique Nespresso Executive Summary This report critically evaluates the management of Nestle’s premium portioned coffee brand, Nespresso, on the basis of consumer based brand equity. To do this a brand overview is provided followed by an analysis of brand equity and marketing program and the provision of recommendations to combat identified threats to brand equity. After examining the basic segmentation variables, the report defines Nespresso’s target market as high income frequent coffee drinkers who seek quality and convenience. Further evaluation of Nespresso’s marketing program identifies that the most significant elements of the marketing mix relate to the design of the coffee system; the Nespresso Club services; a premium pricing strategy; and celebrity endorsement; and an exclusive distribution strategy. The report identifies the sources of Nespresso’s brand equity as brand awareness and image, which are reinforced through the repetition of previously identified brand elements. Threats to these sources of brand equity include Nescafe’s brand extension into portioned coffee and increased competition. Consequently, the report recommends that the future management of the brand focuses on strengthening the brand’s existing position 1 Table of Contents 1.
