This clash also created a new sense of place and function for the writer and his individual consciousness. From then on he/she sought to describe new scenarios and express his/her own perspectives and opinions with more confidence and conviction. Traditional literary formulae were slowly replaced with new and original lines and metaphors, while the verse and the narrative forms were loosened to allow the writer’s personality to be expressed. -

It also provides a bibliographic description and quantitative analysis of Malaysian award winning children and young adults’ literature by describing frequency of book awards and writing competition, prizes and organisations involved, genres, winning authors and categories by children and young adults. This study uses a mixed approach of historical research and bibliographic study. Historical method is used to study the contents of sources, both primary and secondary such as journal articles from Dewan Sastera, Dewan Siswa, books, newspaper reports and printed programmes in order to put into chronology the events that lead up to the organisation and development of children and young adults’ literary prizes in Malaysia. Subsequently, descriptive statistics is used to describe the frequency of awards, genres, organisations involved, categories, years of awards, prizes value and the winning authors and their works. In the early years, writing competitions were mostly organised by DBP, a government agency; in this era, the private sector had overtaken the government in organising and sponsoring literary prizes. -

Thursday, October 30, 2003 Theatre in Malaysia: The Contemporary Situation by Carmen Nge Since Independence, theatre practice in Malaysia is characterized by two salient features: its ability to respond and adapt to an ever-changing context, and its diversity in terms of form, style, and structure. Nonetheless, like all creative arts practices in the world, theatre in Malaysia is not without its problems; the ebb and flow of the performing arts scene in the country is very much informed by trends and events both within as well as beyond the confines of Malaysia alone. Despite this reality, there is no denying that theatre practice in this country continues to endure and theatre practitioners continue to create work that often entertain, and sometimes challenge and provoke theatre audiences in Malaysia and even abroad. This essay, which attempts to give an overview of theatre practice in Malaysia, is not meant to be exhaustive. Instead, this essay will focus on theatre practice in the contemporary scene, while giving the reader a sense of what came before, i.e. some general historical information is provided but by no means is this meant to be comprehensive. Additionally, this essay delineates the differences within Malaysian theatre along linguistic lines; hence, there is no coverage of Malaysian theatre as a whole. While some may quibble about this delineation, the fact of the matter is that broadly speaking, the contemporary theatre scene in Malaysia continues to be structured along linguistic lines and there exists much development within each language-specific theatre that deserve mention and explication. However, even though the histories and trends within each language-specific theatre will be discussed, this essay will also identify a few general trends that have been observed in theatre in Malaysia as a whole. -

SYMBOLS IN THE PLAYS OF NOORDIN HASSAN BY ROHANI BINTI MD. YOUSOFF A dissertation submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctorate of Philosophy International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilization (ISTAC) International Islamic University Malaysia SEPTEMBER 2010 ABSTRACT The works of National Laureate Noordin Hassan must be looked at in the light of his life as a historic route of occasions, coloured by his past, his richness of experiential content. His emotions draws on the past to form the present, most often presented through symbols. The responses and reference to the meaning of the symbols should give the additional effect and room for analysis. The constructs of knowledge, awareness and meaning is realized by integrating the multiple perspectives derived from the use of ‘self’ as part of the context of analysis. Noordin’s process of knowing and its end product, his plays, are based on, and subject to a time and space dimension that affects the way he knows and the way he produces his works. Time and space influence the nature of his thinking methods and the nature of the knowledge. This study hopes to explore the use of symbols in five of his plays supported by inter- textual references to his other works. The dissertation shall begin with his background: his origin, education and the influences on his life that have contributed to ideas for the plays. Analysis of the texts and interviews with the playwright shall reveal the sources of his ideas and inspiration to reveal the soul of a most prolific Islamic playwright.
