GAME 3: Averett 14, Washington & Lee 10 DANVILLE, Va. — On a day when the rainy, muddy fi eld conditions made scoring drives a rarity, Averett’s defense got the job done. The Cou- gars shut out Washington & Lee University in the second half for a 14-10 victory on Homecoming at the Cougar Den on Saturday. Averett (2-1) held Washington & Lee to zero rushing yards on 15 car- ries in the second half, and the Cougars picked off three passes — includ- ing one by senior Frederick Reid with less than two minutes to play — to seal their second consecutive victory. With a light mist falling early in the game, Washington & Lee (1-3) took a 3-0 lead on a Martin Pritchard 27-yard fi eld goal in the fi rst quarter. With both offenses struggling to get anything going, the Generals broke through for a touchdown on a 3-yard run by Jonathan Clemo, which gave Washing- ton & Lee a 10-0 advantage wit 3:34 to go in the second quarter. Averett answered the challenge on its next possession with a seven- play, 59-yard drive that culminated in a 28-yard touchdown reception from junior quarterback Cody Ladutko to senior wide receiver Anthony Squillini. Although the Cougars cut the defi cit to 10-7, they gave the Gener- als great fi eld position on the kickoff return. Washington & Lee, however, fumbled the ball away on an errant option toss inside Averett’s 30-yard line. Cougars sophomore defensive end Anssi Nevalainen dove on the loose ball to swing the momentum in Averett’s way to end the half. As the rain steadily picked up at the start of the second half, neither team had success moving the ball early in the third quarter. Averett caught a break when the defense held Washington & Lee to three-and-out and got great fi eld position on a punt that didn’t make it to midfi eld. Following a pair of Averett rushes, Ladutko once again found Squillini along the left side for a 31-yard touchdown. Squillini fi nished the game with seven receptions for 87 yards and a pair of scores. The win was the Cougars’ fi rst against Washington & Lee in three meetings. Averett’s defense limited Washington & Lee — which was averaging 217.0 rushing yards a contest — to 124 yards on the ground and just 184 yards of total offense. The Cougars’ defense was led by junior linebacker Logan Smyth, who had a team-high eight tackles and a sack for a loss of 9 yards. Reid, sophomore Matthew Smith and sophomore Jerel Robinson each had an interception. While Washington & Lee had four turnovers, Averett didn’t turn the ball over once for the second week in a row.
