ARMBRUSTER Loricariid catfishes have evolved several modifications of the digestive tract that • appear to fWIction as accessory respiratory organs or hydrostatic organs. Adapta­ tions include an enlarged stomach in Pterygoplichthys, Liposan:us, Glyptoperichthys, Hemiancistrus annectens, Hemiancistrus maracaiboensis, HyposWmus panamensis, and Lithoxus; a U-shaped diverticulum in Rhinelepis, Pseudorinelepis, Pogonopoma, and Po­ gonopomoides; and a ringlike diverticulum in Otocinclus. Scoloplacids, closely related to loricariids, have enlarged, clear, air-filled stomachs similar to that of Lithoxus. The ability to breathe air in Otocinclus was confirmed; the ability of Lithoxus and Scoloplax to breathe air is inferred from morphology. The diverticula of Pogonopomoides and Pogonopoma are similar to swim bladders and may be used as hydrostatic organs. The various modifications of the stomach probably represent characters that define monophyletic clades. The ovaries of Lithoxus were also examined and were sho~ to have very few (15--17) mature eggs that were large (1.6-2.2 mm) for the small size of the fish (38.6-41.4 mm SL). Se discuten los aspectos histórico-taxonómico de cada especie, desde las Crónicas de Indias, los primeros naturalistas, hasta las contribuciones científicas más recientes. Se discute la validez de los nombres utilizados tradicionalmente y sus sinonimias. Se sugieren aspectos evolutivos y de relaciones filogenéticas intra y entre los diferentes géneros. C. de Pinna* and Kirk O. Winemiller** A new miniaturized species of the trichomycterid genus Ammoglanisis described from the Rio Orinoco basin in Venezuela. It is distinguished from its only congener, A. diaphanus,by: a banded color pattern formed by internal chromatophores; 5 or 6 pectoral-fin rays (7 in A. diaphanus),5/5 principal caudal-fin rays (6/6 in A. diaphanus),ii+6 dorsal-fin rays (iii+6+i in A. diaphanus),30 or 31 vertebrae (33 in A. diaphanus),six or seven branchiostegal rays (five in A. diaphanus),subterminal mouth (inferior in A. diaphanus)and by the lack of premaxillary and dentary teeth. In this study, we describe the first record of phoretic interaction between larvae of Ichthyocladius sp. and the fish Hisonotus chromodontus in streams in the Amazon basin. Between July 2010 and March 2019, fish were collected from three streams of the Teles Pires River basin in the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil. We investigated the attachment site of chironomid larvae on the body of fish and the frequency of attachment.

Reis1 Pareiorhaphis scutula, new species, is described from the headwaters of the rio Piracicaba, tributary to the upper rio Doce basin in the State of Minas Gerais, southeastern Brazil. The new species is distinguished from all congeners by having an unique autapomorphic feature: the abdominal surface from pectoral girdle to pelvic-fin insertions covered with small platelets imbedded in skin and irregularly scattered. This feature is not shared with any other Pareirhaphis species. Pareiorhaphis scutula is further compared with the sympatric P. nasuta. Pareiorhaphis scutula, nova espécie, é descrita das cabeceiras do rio Piracicaba, tributário do rio Doce no Estado de Minas Gerais, sudeste do Brasil. A nova espécie se distingue de todos os demais congêneres por apresentar como autapomorfia a superfície abdominal, entre as nadadeiras peitorais e a inserção das nadadeiras pélvicas, coberta por pequenas placas irregularmente arranjadas. Esse caráter não é compartilhado com nenhuma outra espécie de Pareiorhaphis. Pareiorhaphis scutula é ainda comparado com a espécie simpátrica P. nasuta. Britto*, Flávio C. T. Lima**, and Alexandre C. A. Santos*** During a recent ichthyological survey in Chapada Diamantina, Estado da Bahia, Brazil, a new, very distinctive Aspidoras was discovered in tributaries of the upper rio Paraguaçu. The new taxon differs from its congeners mainly in having: a poorly- developed pigmentation pattern, restricted to minute scattered blotches on dorsal region of head and body, but grouped in small, irregular blotches along the lateral body plate junction; four or five caudal vertebra, anterior to compound caudal centrum, with neural and haemal spines placed posteriorly, close to post-zygapophyses; and post-zygapophyses of the precaudal vertebrae without dorsal expansions connected with their respective neural spines. The new species shares with Aspidoras velites dorsolateral body plates not touching their counterparts dorsally, and infraorbital bones with reduced flanges that are restricted to the latero-sensory canal. Both of these are considered reductive character states, probably indicating a paedomorphic condition to both species. The new species is also compared to Aspidoras maculosus, a congener which bears the most similar color pattern and is geographically closest to the new species. This is the case for the Bryconidae. Various studies have proposed that this family (considered a subfamily by some authors) may be composed of different genera. However, until now, no phylogenetic study of all putative genera has been conducted. Results: In the present study, we analyzed 27 species (46 specimens) of all currently recognized genera of the Bryconidae (ingroup) and 208 species representing all other families and most genera of the Characiformes (outgroup). Five genes were sequenced: 16SrRNA, Cytochrome b, recombination activating gene 1 and 2 and myosin heavy chain 6 cardiac muscle. The final matrix contained 4699 bp and was analyzed by maximum likelihood, maximum parsimony and Bayesian analyses. The results show that the Bryconidae, composed of Brycon, Chilobrycon, Henochilus and Salminus, is monophyletic and is the sister group of Gasteropelecidae + Triportheidae. However, the genus Brycon is polyphyletic. Fossil studies suggest that the family originated approximately 47 million years ago (Ma) and that one of the two main lineages persisted only in trans-Andean rivers, including Central American rivers, suggesting a much older origin of Mesoamerican ichthyofauna than previously accepted.
