Field of Interest Funds FIELD OF INTEREST FUNDS The Quad Cities Community Foundation recognizes that many different things contribute to healthy, vibrant, and livable communities. Through our endowed Field of Interest Funds, the Community Foundation works to connect the generosity of our many donors to the nonprofits that make our Quad Cities region one where people and place thrive. Our volunteer Board and committees pool available resources from many donor gifts and apply grants in all these areas to address priority needs and community opportunities every year. Gifts, bequests and estate provisions are welcomed to any of the below endowed Field of Interest Funds. Or, donors may choose to name an endowed Field of Interest Fund of their own and select a broad category of need that speaks to their passion. Community Impact Fund Responds to the community’s greatest needs and most promising opportunities as they change over time. Past examples of grants in this area include: Transformation Grants, Capacity Building Grants, Emergency Grants, Challenge Grants Basic Human Needs Fund Addressing issues of food insecurity, shelter, housing, clothing and emergency needs. Past examples of grants in this area include: River Bend Foodbank, King’s Harvest Inc., American Red Cross of the QCA, The Salvation Army, Friendly House, Café on Vine Health and Wellness Fund Support of healthcare access and disease prevention, needs of citizens with disabilities, and mental/behavioral health. Past examples of grants in this area include: Children’s Therapy Center of the QC, Vera French Community Mental Health Center, Handicap Development Center, Trinity Health Foundation, Gilda’s Club Quad Cities Children, Youth and Seniors Fund Strengthening child and family education, youth development and mentoring, senior engagement and empowerment. Past examples of grants in this area include: Bethany for Children and Families, Center for Active Seniors, Family Resources, Child Abuse Council, Big Brothers/Big Sisters of the Mississippi Valley, Churches United of the QCA Animals and the Environment Fund Providing for animal welfare, access to green spaces and environmental stewardship. Past examples of grants in this area include: Quad City Animal Welfare Center, King’s Harvest Inc., Humane Society of Scott County, Quad City Botanical Center Foundation, Nahant Marsh Education Center, River Action, Inc. Cities and Neighborhoods Fund Resources for vibrant neighborhoods and city beautification; quality of life; economic planning and development. Past examples of grants in this area include: QC Habitat for Humanity, Friends of Bettendorf Parks Foundation, Oakdale Memorial Gardens, Inc., QC Chamber of Commerce, Renew Moline, Inc. Education Fund Addressing equity, access and achievement in education for all and supporting workforce readiness. Past examples of grants in this area include: Friends of Iowa Public Television, Dress for Success Quad Cities, Augustana College - WVIK, Rock Island County Extension and 4-H Education Foundation, St. Ambrose University Creative Arts and Culture Fund Encouragement for creative and performing arts, cultural heritage and community attractions. Past examples of grants in this area include: Quad Cities Symphony Orchestra Association, Figge Art Museum, River Music Experience, Putnam Museum and Science Center, Quad City Arts, Inc., Ballet Quad Cities WILL AND BEQUEST LANGUAGE The following sample language can be used for estate gifts through: ▪ Wills ▪ Living Trusts ▪ Retirement Plan Designations ▪ Life Insurance Beneficiary Designations ▪ Contingent provisions in any of the above estate documents Each individual situation is unique: therefore, these are basic sample provisions. To assist you with your estate plans, the Community Foundation can provide customized sample language for the causes you may wish to support. To request customized language, please contact our Development Team at (563) 326-2840. We do recommend you consult your attorney with regard to any changes to your estate plan. Suggested Bequest Language Percentage of Estate or Residuary Bequest “I give to the Quad Cities Community Foundation, a nonprofit corporation located in Bettendorf, IA, an amount equal to ______ percent of the total value of the assets in my estate (or the residue of my estate), whatever the amount shall be at the time of my death. This gift is for discretionary purposes to meet the highest priority needs of the community as those arise / is to be added to the (name of existing fund at the Community Foundation here).” or “I give to the Quad Cities Community Foundation, a nonprofit corporation located in Bettendorf, IA, all my right title and interest in the following described property: (list property here). This gift is for discretionary purposes to meet the highest priority needs of the community as those arise / is to be added to the (name of existing fund at the Community Foundation here).” Specific Bequest You may establish an endowment for a specific purpose through your estate by stating, “This gift is to be added to the _____________________ Fund and used in accordance with the written agreement entered into by me and the Quad Cities Community Foundation during my lifetime.” In this case, we work with you to establish the fund particulars in a separate document that may be amended at any time before the bequest is received. This avoids the necessity of amending estate documents if you change your mind about the purpose of the fund. Bequest Provisions for Geographic Affiliate Foundation donors All geographic affiliate foundations of the Community Foundation are component funds of the Community Foundation and are thus under its sole legal control. The language above should be amended to state “... to the (name of geographic affiliate community foundation here), a component fund of the Quad Cities Community Foundation...” Again, please call our office for customized language.     The Foundation’s History The Amy Helpenstell Foundation was established in 2005 through the estate of Amy E. Helpenstell. Amy was a life- long resident of the Quad Cities and was an accomplished leader both personally and professionally. She loved her community dearly and was very active in serving on an array of boards of directors and committees. The On February 1, 2003, Amy passed away from complications due to an eating disorder. Although she did not anticipate Foundation Board Members Amy Helpenstell passing away at such a young age, Amy had the foresight and Franz “Bud” Helpenstell, President generosity to establish an estate plan that would help take Esta Helpenstell, Vice President Foundation care of her community long after she was gone.
