[email protected] DURHAM — The Hwy. 407 extension through Durham will be a toll road owned by the Province, the ministry of transportation announced Tuesday. The Province also revealed the highway’s construction costs will be paid for by the private sector, though details on how the Province will pay back the costs were not yet available. The extension is slated to run from Brock Road in Pickering to Highway 35/115 in Clarington. “Motorists who use the 407 eastern ex- tension will pay for the highway, freeing up provincial investment dollars for other priorities such as public transit,” said Trans- portation Minister Jim Bradley in a prepared statement. “Our approach to extend the 407 eastward will allow us to maintain public ownership of this stretch of highway and regulate the tolls.” The announcement includes a “lessons learned” section, referring to sale of the ex- isting portion of the 407 to the private sec- tor.
