People could climb around in the vehicles and see themselves riding down a carbon foot-print-less highway in a sweet plug-in, natural gas coupe, bio-diesel beauty, or a hill toppin’ hybrid. Riders swooped around on recumbent bikes and hip electric scooters. Lots of questions were answered on smart auto energy, saving mon- ey, lower carbon footprints and cleaner air and water results. Our Texas Health Credit Union neighbors came out with us, neighborly offering their park- ing lot to accommodate visitors. Visiting with them, we discovered more green news—our church members are eligible for the credit union’s no-cost checking and savings accounts.     May 24, 2014 Star Shines at Shell PHOTO BY YOSHI JAMES Homage to cult band’s “Third” kicks off Levitt series By Bob Mehr The Levitt Shell’s 2014 summer season opened Friday night, with a teeming crowd of roughly 4,000 who camped out under clear skies to hear the music of Memphis’ greatest cult band Big Star, in a show dedicated to its dark masterpiece, Third. Performed by an all-star troupe of local and national musicians, it was yet another reminder of how the group, critically acclaimed but commercially doomed during their initial run in the early 1970s, has developed into one of the unlikeliest success stories in rock and roll. The Third album — alternately known as Sister Lovers — was originally recorded at Midtown’s Ardent Studios in the mid-’70s, but vexed the music industry at the time, and was given a belated, minor indie-label release at the end of the decade. However, the music and myth of Third would grow exponentially in the decades to come. When it was finally issued on CD in the early ’90s, the record was hailed by Rolling Stone as an “untidy masterpiece ... beautiful and disturbing, pristine and unkempt — and vehemently original.” 1 North Carolina musician Chris Stamey had long been enamored of the record and the idea of recreating the Third album (along with full string arrangements) live on stage. Luther Russell was the leader of seminal roots-rock band The Freewheelers and is now an acclaimed solo artist and producer of such acts as Richmond Fontaine, Fernando Viciconte, Ned Roberts, Trujillo and Sarabeth Tucek. It was the documentary Big Star: Nothing Can Hurt Me that brought Jody and Luther together creatively, when Jody asked Luther to join him for some promo performances. A chemistry was immediately noticed. They began writing songs and performing them whenever possible, soon taking their name from the opening line of Shakespeare Sonnet 41, which they slipped into one of their first collaborations, “Fool Of Myself”. Burger Records released the first track they cut in Memphis, “Lucky Guy”, with “Fool Of Myself” as the flip side.

    Radio Free Memphis: The WLYX Story Skyler Gambert 2013 Rhodes Institute for Regional Studies Faculty Advisor: Prof. John Bass This work is dedicated to everyone involved with radio at Rhodes from 1951 to today. Especially the volunteers at WLYX, you made it happen. When I came to Rhodes in the fall of 2010, I was extremely disappointed to find that there was no college radio station. Well, that’s not entirely true there was a small digital transmitter with a broadcast radius of about two blocks outside of campus. It could also be streamed online. I had a show that played cover versions and bootleg recordings that aired Friday nights around six. It was fun, but it wasn’t what I knew college radio to be. I grew up in the relatively rural town of Fayetteville, Arkansas. When I was growing up it is pretty hard to find to find a place that sold hardcore, new wave, or alternative records. Most of the live bands played in bars with a 21 and up policy. Luckily I had an uncle who had managed the University of Arkansas’ radio station, KXUA, when he was in college and he showed me where I could find the music I wanted to hear. Without KXUA, I never would have discovered artists like Guided by Voices, Bonnie Prince Billy, or Steve Lehman, music that I still love today. I probably never would have found hip-hop that I could get into without Eric Olsen’s (DJ Eyo) show “The Concrete Schoolyard.” DJs on the station also exposed me to folk music that I considered to be the stuff of museums and heritage festivals before I heard college aged students, whom I idolized, play it on the air.

    Underground Architects of Modern Pop Music: A Core Collection February 22, 2008, Newport, RI In the summer of 2006 a new music course was launched at Youngstown State University, Underground Architects of Modern Pop Music. The course was a survey of unsung composers, experimentalists, and bands that although commercially unsuccessful by music industry standards, have proven since to be powerfully influential. The artists examined created music for its own sake and recorded and released their music on small, independent labels. In some cases they recorded in their own living rooms or basements, fostering the DIY (Do it yourself) ethic that is now transforming the music business as we know it. The course began with a consideration of the pop music industry, how “hits” are manufactured, the double-edged nature of copyright, and payola. This set the stage for analytical, critical listening, both to the innovators who were virtually unknown at the time and to the chart-topping hits of the time. The contrast between the two was profound and prompted much and vigorous discussion. What emerged is a bibliography of essential recordings, monographs, and DVDs representative of the most influential, “under the radar” artists from the late 1960’s to the early 1990’s, a core collection. Students and scholars in music and an array of interdisciplinary fields will benefit immensely from exposure to the innovations and inventions of the artists and material included here.
