Seasonal changes catch my attention and I can rarely resist the changing colours and textures of the natural year. I sketch and paint in watercolour, charcoal or oil then return to the studio where I make larger mixed media pieces guided by memory and feeling. Work gets cut down, torn up, collaged and reformed. AT SAINT MARTIN DE PORES ANOTHER CHAPTER IN OUR CATHOLIC FAMILY’S STORY Septuagesima Sunday Traditionally it kicks off a season known by various names throughout the world; Carnival and Shrovetide This has been a part of our Catholic culture for centuries! Carnival The word carnival comes from the Latin carnelevarium which means the removal of meat or farewell to the flesh. This period of celebration has its origin in the need to consume all remaining meat and animal products, such as eggs, cream and butter, before the six- week Lenten fast. Since controlled refrigeration was uncommon until the 1800s, the foods forbidden by the Church at that time would spoil. Rather than wasting them, families consumed what they had and helped others do the same in a festive atmosphere. Carnival celebrations in Venice, Italy, began in the 14th century. Revelers would don masks to hide their social class, making it difficult to differentiate between nobles and commoners. Today, participants wear intricately decorated masks and lavish costumes often representing allegorical characters while street musicians entertain the crowds. But arguably, the most renowned Carnival celebrations take place in Brazil. In the mid 17th century, Rio de Janeiro’s middle class adopted the European practice of holding balls and masquerade parties before Lent. The celebrations soon took on African and Native American influence, yielding what today is the most famous holiday in Brazil. Carnival ends on Mardi Gras, which is French for Fat Tuesday—the last opportunity to consume foods containing animal fat before the rigors of Lent’s fast begin. -

First, we went to Big Bobs Restaurant. There we had an amazing English breakfast. The Origins and Development of English Folk Plays
National Centre for English Cultural Tradition University of Sheffield THE ORIGINS AND DEVELOPMENT OF ENGLISH FOLK PLAYS Volume 1 Thesis Submitted for the Degree of Ph.D. Peter Thomas Millington May 2002 ABSTRACT This thesis concerns those English folk plays whose plots are centred on the quack doctor character. Earlier researchers proposed three possible origins for these plays: a non-specific mystery play from the time of the crusades, some pre- Christian fertility ritual, and primitive shamanism. All three proposals were based on over-general comparisons, and relied on the key assumption that a continuous history can be traced back from before modern plays to the relevant era. However, in contrast with other customs, no evidence can be found for these plays before the 18th century, despite diligent searching. These theories are therefore disproved. Instead, it is proposed that the plays were attached in the early to mid 18th century to existing house-visiting customs. These were probably the source of the non-representational costumes that are sometimes worn. There is also evidence for the influence of the conventions of the English Harlequinade. The provenance of the scripts is unknown, but similarities between them suggest they ultimately derived from a single proto-text. A full-text database of 181 texts and fragments was built for investigation using cluster analysis, distribution mapping and other computerised techniques, some of which are novel. The cluster analysis has generated a new classification for the play texts that both confirms and extends the established typology. Comparison of the attributes of the clusters, aided by distribution mapping, has resulted in a putative genealogy for the plays that is presented for discussion. -
LENT the Season of Lent
LENT Following is the invitation to the observance of a holy Lent as stated in the Book of Common Prayer, pages 264-265: Dear People of God: The first Christians observed with great devotion the days of our Lord's passion and resurrection, and it became the custom of the Church to prepare for them by a season of penitence and fasting. This season of Lent provided a time in which converts to the faith were prepared for Holy Baptism. It was also a time when those who, because of notorious sins, had been separated from the body of the faithful were reconciled by penitence and forgiveness, and restored to the fellowship of the Church. Thereby, the whole congregation was put in mind of the message of pardon and absolution set forth in the Gospel of our Savior, and of the need which all Christians continually have to renew their repentance and faith. I invite you, therefore, in the name of the Church, to the observance of a holy Lent, by self-examination and repentance; by prayer, fasting, and self-denial; and by reading and meditating on God's holy Word. HAVE GERMAN WILL TRAVEL Feie1iag PFINGSTEN I PENTECOST Pentecost is also the Greek name for Jewish Feast of Weeks (Shavuot), falling on the 50th day of Passover. It was during the Feast of Weeks that the first fruits of the grain harvest were presented (see Deuteronomy 16:9). New Testament references to Pentecost likely refer to the Jewish feast and not the Christian feast, which gradually developed during and after the Apostolic period. In the English speaking countries, Pentecost is also known as Whitsunday. The origin of this name is unclear, but may derive from the Old English word for "White Sunday," referring to the practice of baptizing converts clothed in white robes on the Sunday of Pentecost. In the English tradition, new converts were baptized on Easter, Pentecost, and All Saints Day, primarily for pragmatic purposes: people went to church these days. Alternatively, the name Whitsunday may have originally meant "Wisdom Sunday," since the Holy Spirit is traditionally viewed as the Wisdom of God, who bestows wisdom upon Christians at baptism. Pentecost (Ancient Greek: IlcvrrtKO<>Til [i\µtpa], Liturgical year Pentekoste [hemera}, "the fiftieth [day]") is the Greek Western name for the Feast of Weeks, a prominent feast in the calendar of ancient Israel celebrating the giving of the Law on Sinai. The thesis divides into two main sections. In the first, the English mummer's plays of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries are analyzed on an anthropological model in order to determine the symbolic functions of the man-dressed-as-woman. In the second, the historical development of the Maid Marian character of the Robin Hood legend highlights the differences between folk drama and the legitimate stage.
