Issuing a single disc of Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler would be a silly thing at best and a hopelessly frustrating one at worst. When the band burst on the scene with "Sultans of Swing," there was a lot happening in rock music, but most of it was under the radar and remains forgotten except in the historic annals of music fanatics. They couldn't help but become superstars and mainstays of MTV. But there is another story told on this best-of, which begins with "Telegraph Road. But "On Every Street," "Calling Elvis," and "What It Is" are here, too, making for a wonderfully rounded if argumentative best-of collection that goes the distance and explains sonically what all the fuss was about in the first place. There's the guitar sound that's as much Tony Joe White as it is J. There is a new cut here as well, a duet with Emmylou Harris called "All the Roadrunning," taken from an upcoming collaborative album, and it's nice -- beautiful, in fact -- and keeps the line of continuity and excellence in perspective.     Telegraph Road — for me it’s nearly 4,000 mile long By Rick Astley Telegraph Road is certainly known to every member on the US side of the border and probably also by most who live in Canada . Although I didn’t know it at the time, long before I could reliably point to Detroit on a map, I was somewhat familiar with the road too. Back in the mid-80s, like most parents of teenagers, I would often have to ferry my eldest son to and from some activity or other, in our case, from our home in a small English village to the nearest town about 14 minutes away. Those 14 minutes are significant because it happened to be the same length as a track my son and I would love to play on the car’s cassette player, he on air guitar, me on dashboard drums, at a volume his mother wouldn’t have approved of. The track was called Telegraph Road and it was written and played by Dire Straits. The song’s length meant that it was never heard on the radio and the fact that it would often change mood, volume and tempo, made it impossible to dance to, so it was never played in clubs, or rather, discotheques as they were then known. The track, and Dire Straits’ music in general, became part of our father-son bonding. In fact years later, when my son was in college in Montreal, he bought tickets for my birthday to see the group at the Forum (at that time the Canadiens’ hockey arena).

    About the Filmmakers Although he is known primarily as an author, Timothy Ferris has been involved in television since age sixteen, when he wrangled seagulls for NBC’s Omnibus and shot film for the Tonight show. While in high school he anchored a live Saturday-morning panel program, Youth Meets Business, which he describes today as “so stultifyingly boring that I believe its only viewers some mornings were our parents,” and played a defense attorney in a youth-oriented courtroom drama “that even our parents gave up watching.” Undaunted, Ferris went on to write and present two PBS specials — The Creation of the Universe and Life Beyond Earth. The two aired back-to-back in 1999, making Ferris one of the few nonfiction filmmakers to have an entire night of prime-time network programming devoted to his work. In addition to producing, writing, and narrating Seeing in the Dark, Ferris shot several of its time-lapse sequences, made field recordings for its soundtrack, and designed its special effects. Ferris is the author of ten books, including Seeing in the Dark, on which the film is based, named by The New York Times as one of the ten best books of the year. He produced the Voyager phonograph record, an artifact of human civilization launched aboard the twin Voyager interstellar spacecraft and now exiting the outer reaches of the solar system, and was among the journalists selected as candidates to fly aboard the space shuttle in 1986. Called “the Press Contact: best popular science writer in the English language” by The Christian Science Monitor and “the best science writer of his generation” by The Washington Gail Rubin Post, Ferris is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of (505) 265-7215 Science.
