"Chariots Of Fire" 1 Looking over the West Sands, St. Andrews, Fife, as featured in the film "Chariots Of Fire" (1981). It is on the beach pictured here that the British Olympic Running team are seen training in preparation for the 1924 Olympics in Paris. It is an example where the Scottish landscape is used to realise a place that is elsewhere- the scene is actually meant to be Broadstairs in Kent. "Chariots Of Fire" is the true story of two British track athletes competing in the 1924 Olympic Games. Eric Liddell is a devout Scottish missionary who runs for God whilst Harold Abrahams is a Jewish student who runs for fame and to escape prejudice for his religious beliefs. Extensive use of Scottish locations were used in the making of the film. The 1981 film, "Chariots of Fire" was directed by Hugh Hudson. It starred Ben Cross as Harold Abrahams and Ian Charleson as Eric Liddell. It was a critical and box office.     How others see us in film Scotland in the world – learning journey Introduction This social studies project uses cinema to explore how Scotland’s identity can be understood, not only in terms of the nation but also in terms of the identities which variously overlap it. Overall, these identities, sometimes called ‘transnational’, are various and varied. In cinema, they include expressions of ‘Scottishness’ constructed in the USA, Canada, England, France, India, Hong Kong (amongst others), which indicate the complexity of Scotland’s position in the world’s imagination. Exploring such films, the discourses that surround them, and how they intertwine with the global flows of people into and out of Scotland, enables students to consider how global citizenship ‘starts at home’. Social studies significant aspects of learning understanding the place, history, heritage and culture of Scotland and appreciating local and national heritage within the world becoming aware of change, cause and effect, sequence and chronology locating, exploring and linking periods, people, events and features in time and place Social studies experiences and outcomes I can make links between my current and previous studies, and show my understanding of how people and events have contributed to the development of the Scottish nation.     Projecting the Nation: Constructions of Scotland in Film Since 1979 Emily Torricelli PhD University of York Theatre, Film and Television January 2016 Abstract This thesis examines questions of the continued significance of national cinemas and identities, focussing on the case of Scottish cinema. As a small, devolved nation with relative autonomy from the United Kingdom, Scotland presents an interesting case for how films are labelled with a national identity, as Scottish films can also often be understood in a British, European, and even global context. Rather than attempting to construct a working model of Scottish cinema based on representation or production context, I ask how films have been constructed as Scottish. I approach the concepts of Scotland and Scottish film as sets of meanings that are subject to change over time and in different contexts. This facilitates a perspective which asks in what ways Scotland and Scottishness is constructed in film. I examine how multiple identities are balanced in the filmic construction of Scotland first by considering how Scottish films—both those made in and which are about Scotland—from the early 1980s to the present construct Scottish identities. I will consider the way these films explored ‘traditional’ Scottish identities in the 1980s, Scottish masculinity in the 1990s, and Scottish identities based on ethnicity and gender in the 2000s and 2010s.     Imagining Scotland: Local Hero (1983) and Kailyardism Beatriz Oria Gómez Universidad de Zaragoza [email protected] The aim of this article is to reflect on how cinematic representations of Scotland shape our image of the country. Far from offering realistic portrayals of the Scottish identity, most films depicting Scotland today still dwell on the clichés and stereotypes traditionally associated with this nation, thus perpetuating its dreamlike image and immersing the country in a stasis which prevents it from active participation in the historical present. In the present article, I will focus on one particular trend of representation, the Kailyard tradition, paying attention to its use in the film Local Hero (Bill Forsyth, 1983) as marker of a distinctive Celtic identity. The analysis will show how the apparent subversion of stereotypes and ‘militant’ attitude that some critics have identified in the film actually hide, once again, a reinforcement of traditional representations of the nation whose main target is commercial success. Inspired by Lonnie Donegan and his uncle Kingsley's harmonica and boogie-woogie piano playing, he wanted to buy an expensive Fiesta Red Fender Stratocaster just like Hank Marvin's, but had to settle for a £50 imitation. Unfortunately in his haste he forgot to budget for an amp, and after trying to plug it into his parent’s home radio and blowing it up, he had to settle for playing it against something solid to vaguely hear the notes instead.

    Quick, Timely Reads Reading in the Time of Coronavirus On the Waterfront West Fourth Street Music Scene Let’s Be Friends, Sunbeam Bread, a​ nd the Ave Maria By David Frew November 2020 Dr. David Frew, a prolific writer, author, and speaker, grew up on Erie's lower west side as a proud "Bay Rat," joining neighborhood kids playing and marauding along the west bayfront. He has written for years about his beloved Presque Isle and his adventures on the Great Lakes. In a new series of articles for the Jefferson, the retired professor takes note of life in and around the water. Television was in its infancy during the 1950s and sets were rare. But thanks to my father being an electronics salesman, we had one of the first TVs in the neighborhood. It was a black and white (of course), table- top, Hallicrafter, which was about 24 inches long with a screen that was no more than 12 inches in diameter. We only received a single channel, WICU, and weekday broadcasting did not begin until suppertime. I did not particularly like the television. I preferred radio, especially since I had my own crystal tuner with an antenna hooked to my metal bed springs as well as an auxiliary wire leading out the bedroom window to a metal pole behind the house. Most evenings I could get mega-station broadcasts from Pittsburgh, Nashville, Cincinnati, Toronto, and Chicago. The VHF Hallicrafter TV set There was, however, one television program that I looked forward to, – a Sunday evening, locally produced variety show titled “Let’s Be Friends.” The show’s MC, Paul Dwyer, sang and danced as he introduced local talent.
