Department of Geosciences, Texas Technological College, Lubbock ABSTRACT Pluvial Lake Palomas, which once inundated approximately 3,000 square miles of northwestern Chihuahua, Mexico, during post-Kansan time, was confined mainly to Chihuahua by incisement of La Mesa by the Rio Grande. Measured sec- tions and field traverses show the Camp Rice Formation continuous from La Mesa south into Chihuahua, but outcrops of older fluvial and lacustrine units are unknown. Evidence of Lake Palomas such as abandoned beaches, spits, wave-cut escarpments, multiple shorelines and lacustrine deposits, is widespread, the highest well-established Wisconsin level being about ± 4,018 feet. Gravity profiles and regional geology indicate that the eastern part of the Lake Palomas basin is of tectonic origin, the deepest part being north of the Franklin bolson, but south of the International Border. Regional geology also indicates that the possibilities for discovery of commercial continental salines are especially promising in the lacustrine sections. RESUMEN El Lago Pluvial de Palomas, que una vez inundó aproximadamente 3,000 millas cuadradas del noroeste de Chihuahua, Mexico, durante la época post-Kansan, fue restrigido principalmente a Chihuahua de bido a la erosion de La Mesa por el Rio Grande. Secciones medidas y caminamientos muestran que la Forrnación Camp Rice, se continua desde La Mesa hacia el sur a Chihuahua, Pero se desconocen afloramientos de unidades fluviales y lacustres más antiguas. The following variables were measured at 18 randomly selected sampling sites: lithium (Li), arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), cobalt (Co), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), molybdenum (Mo), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), antimony (Sb), selenium (Se), thallium (Ti), vanadium (V), and zinc (Zn). Also measured were pH, total solids, total nitrogen (N- ammoniacal and N-organic), temperature, electrical conductivity (EC), and coliforms (total and fecal). A Kruskal-Wallis test was performed for all variables. Of all metal variables, Fe and Mn were present in excessive amounts at all sites reaching values higher than 100 ppm and 1.00 ppm, respectively. Variables with the most undesirable levels were total coliform and fecal coliform that reached values as high as 460*103 NMP/100mL in a sampling point close to an urban city called Cuauhtemoc. These results show the high levels of some contaminates in the Laguna de Bustillos and represent the formal data needed to request help from different regulatory authorities.     Chapter 9 Carnivora (Mammalia, Felidae, Canidae, and Mustelidae) From the Earliest Hemphillian Screw Bean Local Fauna, Big Bend National Park, Brewster County, Texas MARGARET SKEELS STEVENS1 AND JAMES BOWIE STEVENS2 ABSTRACT The Screw Bean Local Fauna is the earliest Hemphillian fauna of the southwestern United States. The fossil remains occur in all parts of the informal Banta Shut-in formation, nowhere very fossiliferous. The formation is informally subdivided on the basis of stepwise ®ning and slowing deposition into Lower (least fossiliferous), Middle, and Red clay members, succeeded by the valley-®lling, Bench member (most fossiliferous). Identi®ed Carnivora include: cf. Pseudaelurus sp. and cf. Nimravides catocopis, medium and large extinct cats; Epicyon haydeni, large borophagine dog; Vulpes sp., small fox; cf. Eucyon sp., extinct primitive canine; Buisnictis chisoensis, n. sp., extinct skunk; and Martes sp., marten. B. chisoensis may be allied with Spilogale on the basis of mastoid specialization. Some of the Screw Bean taxa are late survivors of the Clarendonian Chronofauna, which extended through most or all of the early Hemphillian. The early early Hemphillian, late Miocene age attributed to the fauna is based on the Screw Bean assemblage postdating or- eodont and predating North American edentate occurrences, on lack of de®ning Hemphillian taxa, and on stage of evolution. One of these, called in the legend, Presidio dcl Paso, is situated where Juarcz, in Chihuahua, now stands, just opposite El Paso. The other four arc designated on this map as 1 Mision d 5" Lorenzo, Mision d Cenecu, Mision d la Isleta, and Mision del Socorro. Each is indicated by a picture of a church building, with surrounding lines representing irrigation canals, as the legend "riego de las misiones" states. All of these lie on the right bank of the river, or in what is now the state of Chihuahua, Mexico.     Artistic Geography and the Northern Jesuit Missions of New Spain By Clara Bargellini Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México [email protected] (working paper, not be reproduced without the author’s permission) George Kubler´s seminal thoughts on artistic geography came out of his involvement with the art and architecture of the Hispanic New World. This paper examines a group of 17th and 18th century Jesuit missions in northern Mexico in order to expand our understanding of New World artistic geography, and also to explore the history of some geographic notions and their place in art historical discussions. Whereas Kubler was concerned with the transmission of styles, my interest here will be the movement of specific objects and individuals within a particular historical configuration. This will involve, of course, considerations about patronage and institutions, with some references to iconography, all of which ultimately has implications for the transmission of styles, as Kubler would no doubt have recognized. The missions in question were established in the first half of the 17th century by the Jesuits in the northern Tepehuan and Southeastern Tarahumara region, and were held by the Society until its 1767 expulsion from New Spain. From their arrival in 1572 the Jesuits focused on ministry among the native population of New Spain. Almost at once they began missionary activity among the indigenous populations in places near Mexico City. By 1580 they were established at Tepotzotlán learning native languages. In 1589 the Jesuits were among the legendary chichimecas at San Luis de la Paz, and two years later they were in Sinaloa, where they established an extraordinary system of missions about which we now have only documents and very sparse remains.

Doty Introduction Irrigation from wells has been practiced in the Deming and Columbus areas of Luna County, southwestern New Mexico, since Che turn of the century. East of Columbus, in Tps. 27 to 29 S., Rs. 5 and 6 W., in the southeastern corner of Luna County (fig. 1) is an area of about 174 square miles of rangeland that has never been developed for fanning. This rangeland area, in this report, is called the Arena area. Arena is an abandoned railroad station and is the only named feature on most maps of the area. The continual search in New Mexico for new land that can be irrigated has resulted in numerous inquiries to the New Mexico State Engineer about the availability and quality of the ground water in the Arena area and of the possibilities of utilizing the water for irrigation if it is available.

    UA: 320/12 Index: AMR 41/070/2012 Mexico Date: 25 October 2012 URGENT ACTION ACTIVIST LEADER AND WIFE KILLED IN MEXICO An environmental activist leader and his wife have been killed in Chihuahua state, northern Mexico. This event follows a pattern of death threats and there are fears for the security of other members of the family and other leaders of the activists’ organization. On 22 October, the dead body of activist Ismael Solorio Urrutia was found with a shot to the head, and his wife Manuela Solís Contreras with a shot the chest. They had been on their way to a medical appointment in Chihuahua City. Both were members of El Barzón, a smallholder farmers’ movement in Chihuahua. Chihuahua State suffers from a shortage of water; Ismael Solorio Urrutia had been campaigning to improve access to water. Amnesty International has been informed that there had been a repeated pattern of threats. In September, Ismael Solorio Urrutia and other members of the organization received death threats from an unknown man. Formal complaints about these threats were filed with the Chihuahua Estate Interior Minister (Secretario de Gobierno del Estado de Chihuahua). The threats continued, and on 13 October Ismael Solorio Urrutia and his son were attacked and beaten by someone who allegedly worked for a mining company indirectly involved in the dispute over water access. On 15 October, members of El Barzón asked to meet with the Secretary of Government of Chihuahua State, to request his intervention to prevent further attacks and hold to account those responsible for the death threats.

Sisneros lthough the Armendáriz surname is uncommon in New Mexico today, Athe Armendáriz family was important in New Mexico during the early to mid-1800s, with key political, diplomatic, and social links to Texas; Cali- fornia; Washington, D.C.; and Mexico. The lives of the Armendárizes attest to the long and constant movement of people, trade, and politics along El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro (the Royal Road of the Interior) and to the formation of a binational region. From Santa Fe, New Mexico, to the El Paso/ Ciudad Juárez border and Chihuahua City to Mexico City, the Armendáriz family legacy demonstrates that New Mexico has never been completely iso- lated from the larger history, national formation, or culture of Mexico.

    The Many Faces of Mexico by David J. Danelo David Danelo graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy and served seven years as an infantry officer in the Marine Corps. In 2004, then-Captain Danelo served near Fallujah with the First Marine Expeditionary Force as a convoy commander, intelligence officer and provisional executive officer for a rifle company. His first book, Blood Stripes: The Grunt’s View of the War in Iraq (Stackpole: 2006), was awarded the 2006 Silver Medal (Military History) by the Military Writers Society of America. His most recent book is The Border: Exploring the U.S.-Mexican Divide (2008). He is a Senior Fellow in FPRI’s Program on National Security. The patriotic festivities culminated on September 15, when revelers crowded the plazas of Mexico’s cities, cheeks painted in the tricolor of green, white and red. Just before midnight, in accordance with Mexico’s annual custom, city leaders read Father Miguel Hidalgo’s 1810 proclamation against colonial tyranny, and the crowd affirmed its conclusion with thunderous cries of ‘‘Viva Me´xico!’’ The Grito de Dolores, as the commemorated event is called, felt like a cross between July 4th in Washington, D.C.
