6 MARVELOUS TREE ART FROM MR MASKERINE’S CLASS The Grade Five students from Mr. Maskerine’s class did a very fun art activity. They made a piece of tree art work using a glue gun.

The materials you will need are:  Canvas  Primer (white)  Napkins  Glue guns  Glue sticks for the glue gun  Paint: orange, red, yellow, black, dark purple, light purple, dark blue, & light blue.

Steps: 1. The first step is to get the canvas. 2. Next you will get the primer and prime the canvas. 3. Then you will get the glue gun, turn it on. When it is warm and melty you will draw a tree with the glue gun on the canvas. 4. When you are done drawing with the glue gun, let it dry for about an hour. 5. When the glue is dry you will prime everything on the canvas including the tree on it. 6. Then you will wait until it dries. 7. When it is dry, you will choose if you want to make a sunset or a sunrise. If you want a sunset you will put red paint at the top, orange paint in the middle, and yellow paint at the bottom. If you want a sunrise you will put yellow paint on the top, orange paint in the middle, and red paint on the bottom. 8. Each time you paint on a new colour you will blend the colours into each other. 9. Now will wait until the paint dries. 10. When it is done drying you will get the black paint. When you get the black paint you will add some water and make the black paint thinner. 11. Then you will get the napkin and scrunch it up into a ball. 12. After that you will put the black paint onto the canvas. 13. Before the paint dries you will take your napkin and add another layer. You will have to do that a few times. 14. Then you will let the paint dry. 15. When the paint is dry you will get the purple and blue. 16. You will do the same thing that you did with the black except using the purple and blue. If you choose to use purple you will use dark purple and light purple together. If you use the blue, you will use the dark blue and light blue together. 17. Then you will let the paint dry. When the paint is dry you are done. 18. If you would like you can put it in a picture frame.

SUN SAFE BEHAVIOUR

Getting students outside and active is good for their health but too much sun can have serious side-effects, including burns, eye damage, premature aging of the skin and skin cancer. We encourage all students to practice “sun safety.”

What exactly does sun safe behaviour look like? • Cover up: Even on days with a moderate UV index students should wear a hat and sunglasses, especially if they'll be outside for over 30 minutes. • Stay cool: Students should stay in shady areas, particularly at midday when the sun is strongest. • Use sunscreen: Choose sunscreens with SPF 15 or higher that include protection from both UVA and UVB rays.

11 TOM LONGBOAT DAY

We are very proud that our school is named after Tom Longboat. In 2008, June 4 was officially declared "Tom Longboat Day" in Ontario with the passage of Bill 120, a Private Member's Bill.

Thomas Charles Longboat (June 4, 1887 – January 9, 1949), whose Iroquois name was Cogwagee, was an Onondaga distance runner from the Six Nations Reserve near Brantford, Ontario, and for much of his career the dominant long-distance runner of the time.

20TH ANNUAL TOM LONGBOAT DAY RUN by Arvin & Deepesh

On June 4th, a group of 32 students and 5 adult supervisors went to Six Nations Grand River to participate in the 20th Annual Tom Longboat Walk/Run/Bike Day. As soon as we got there, we saw a massive Tom Longboat statue! It was amazing! It was 10:30 a.m. and we were ready to start our run.

After our 10k run and 5k walk, we (Tom Longboat Junior Public School ) were invited by an Indigenous school (I. L. Thomas Elementary School), which was shaped as a turtle. We finished our lunch and attended an assembly. After that we had a tour around the whole school meeting magnificent students and magnificent staff members, and had a chance to listen to the schools 2nd language Cayuga (In Cayuga Gayogo̱hó꞉nǫʼ) a Northern Iroquoian language.

Back at school, staff created innovative and creative workshops, teaching students about Tom Longboat’s Heritage and inspiring them to dig deepr into a vital part of our history. The day began with our very own race.
