Almost unmatched in the city's history for the large size and glamorous composition of its picket lines, the strike's transformation into a local "cause celebre" owed much to the input of the Communist Party of Los Angeles (CPLA) and its widely diffused allies. While the Communists were not responsible for calling the walkout in May 1938, the subsequent development of the strike into a small-scale symbol of the potential inherent in liberal-labor-left unity was largely attributable to the CPLA's carefully planned strategy, which attempted to fulfill the goals set by the American Communist Party during the "Democratic Front" period (1938-39); namely, to mobilize the broadest possible network of pro- Roosevelt groups and individuals, integrated with the full complement of Party-led organizations.

He started his career as a child film actor in 1911. In 1915 Hathaway quit school and went to work at Universal Studios as a laborer, later becoming a property man. He was recruited for service during World War I in 1917, Hathaway saw his time in the army as an opportunity to get an education. He was never deployed, contracting the flu during the 1918 influenza pandemic. After being discharged from the army in 1918, Hathaway pursued a career in financing but returned to Hollywood to work as a property man at Samuel Goldwyn Studios and Paramount Studios. By 1924 Hathaway was working as an Assistant Director at Paramount Studios, under directors such as Josef von Sternberg, Victor Fleming, Frank Lloyd, and William K. Howard.     The political history of Classical Hollywood: moguls, liberals and radicals in the 1930s Professor Mark Wheeler, London Metropolitan University Introduction Hollywood’s relationship with the political elite in the Depression reflected the trends which defined the USA’s affairs in the interwar years. For the moguls mixing with the powerful indicated their acceptance by America’s elites who had scorned them as vulgar hucksters due to their Jewish and show business backgrounds. They could achieve social recognition by demonstrating a commitment to conservative principles and supported the Republican Party. However, MGM’s Louis B. Mayer held deep right-wing convictions and became the vice-chairman of the Southern Californian Republican Party. He formed alliances with President Herbert Hoover and the right-wing press magnate William Randolph Hearst. Along with Hearst, Will Hays and an array of Californian business forces, ‘Louie Be’ and MGM’s Production Chief Irving Thalberg led a propaganda campaign against Upton Sinclair’s End Poverty in California (EPIC) gubernatorial election crusade in 1934. This form of ‘mogul politics’ was characterized by the instincts of its authors: hardness, shrewdness, autocracy and coercion. 1 In response to the mogul’s mercurial values, the Hollywood community pursued a significant degree of liberal and populist political activism, along with a growing radicalism among writers, directors and stars. For instance, James Cagney and Charlie Chaplin supported Sinclair’s EPIC campaign by attending meetings and collecting monies. Their actions reflected the economic, social and political conditions of the era, notably the collapse of US capitalism with the Great Depression, the New Deal, the establishment of trade unions, and the emigration of European political refugees due to Nazism.

Consider the production of Lives of a Bengal Lancer, a Paramount picture based on a novel by Francis Yeats-Brown that followed the struggles of three British soldiers in India. Initial work on the screenplay was assigned to two writers by the names of Malcolm Stewart Bailey and Harvey Gates in early 1932. As writer Grover Jones testified, “in those days we used to write scripts alphabetically as the sequence came, A, B, C and so on. Well, they wrote and wrote and got a little discouraged, and finally got down to F and said, ‘the hell with it,’ and quit.” Then the job was handed over to Jones and his partner William Slavens McNutt. They wrote a script but the studio decided not to pursue it. Afterwards, “two or three years went by, maybe four. Writers came from all over the world to work on Bengal Lancer. They were from every place. And the cost accumulated – I have forgotten the exact figure now – almost up to $300,000, $400,000 or half a million.” At that point director Henry Hathaway came on board.

    The Museum of Modern Art For Immediate Release June 1990 Twentieth Century Fox: 1935-1965 July 1 - September 11, 1990 This summer, The Museum of Modern Art pays tribute to Twentieth Century Fox with a retrospective of over ninety films made between 1935 and 1965. Opening on July 1, 1990, TWENTIETH CENTURY FOX: 1935-1965 traces three key decades in the history of the studio, celebrating the talents of the artists on both sides of the cameras who shaped this period. The exhibition continues through September 11. Formed in 1915, the Fox Film Corporation merged in 1935 with the much younger Twentieth Century to launch a major new studio. Under the supervision of Darryl F. Zanuck, Twentieth Century Fox developed a new house style, emphasizing epic biographies such as John Ford's The Prisoner of Shark Island (1936) and Allan Dwan's Suez (1938) and snappy urban pictures such as Sidney Lanfield's Hake Up and Live (1937) and Roy Del Ruth's Thanks a Million (1935). The studio also featured such fresh screen personalities as Tyrone Power, Alice Faye, and Shirley Temple. From this time on, the studio masterfully anticipated and shaped the tastes of the movie-going public. During World War II, Twentieth Century Fox made its mark with a series of exuberant Technicolor musicals featuring such actresses as Betty Grable and Carmen Miranda. After the war, the studio shifted focus and began to highlight other genres including films noirs such as Edmund Goulding's Nightmare Alley (1947) and Otto Preminger's Where the Sidewalk Ends (1950), wry satirical films such as Joseph L.

ZANUCK PREPARES FOR WAR PETER STEAD Swansea University In 1941 the 20th Century Fox production How Gr~n Was My Valley beat off opposition from The Maltese Falcon and Citizen Kane and scooped the kitty at the Oscar ceremony. It won five Oscars, three more than the same studio'sThe Grapes of Wrath in the previous year, but one less than MGM's Mrs. Miniver a year later. Both How Green and Grapes of Wrath were produced by Fox's vice-president in charge of production, Darryl F Zanuck. 1 The fiJming of The Grapes of Wrath had signalled a new mood in Hollywood; it had indicated that, with a war in Europe and with America being forced to consider the implications of that war, a time had come in which it would be possible to make films about some of the everyday problems faced by ordinary people. In his earlier career at Warner Bros., Zanuck had been involved with the production ofcritically acclaimed and successful social problem films and more than anything else he appreciated how effectively a realistic social background and authentic social tensions promoted the power ofa good story set in thatcontext.2 Nunnally Johnson had been circulating galley­ proofs of Steinbeck's novel around the Hollywood studios even before the book was published. There was an understandable reluctance to take up such a controversial subject and, though doubtless motivated by the urge to spite his rivals, it was Zanuck's unique genius which allowed him to appreciate immediately the power of the story,, Zanuck's motives were as always almost entirely commercial.
