There is nothing quite like watching physical feats, pulse-pounding drama, and epic confrontations on a large screen alongside other astonished moviegoers. See It Big! Action offers up some of our favorites of the genre.” In all, 32 films will be shown, many of them in 35mm prints. Almost unmatched in the city's history for the large size and glamorous composition of its picket lines, the strike's transformation into a local "cause celebre" owed much to the input of the Communist Party of Los Angeles (CPLA) and its widely diffused allies. While the Communists were not responsible for calling the walkout in May 1938, the subsequent development of the strike into a small-scale symbol of the potential inherent in liberal-labor-left unity was largely attributable to the CPLA's carefully planned strategy, which attempted to fulfill the goals set by the American Communist Party during the "Democratic Front" period (1938-39); namely, to mobilize the broadest possible network of pro- Roosevelt groups and individuals, integrated with the full complement of Party-led organizations. -

Maybe more so. “Casablanca” was never a great film, never a profound film. It’s merely the most beloved movie of all time. In its fifty-year history, it has resisted the transmogrifica- tion of its rich, reverberant icons into camp. It’s not about the demimondaines washing through Rick’s Café Americain – at the edge of the world, at the edge of hope – in 1941. Ultimately, it’s not even about Bogey and Ingrid Bergman sacrificing love for nobility. It’s about the hold movies have on us. That’s what makes it so powerful, so enduring. It is film’s analogue to Noel Coward’s famous line about the amazing potency of cheap music. Like few films before or since, it sums up Hollywood’s genius for recasting archetypes in big, bold, universally accessible strokes, for turning myth into pop culture. Tutankhamun and Ramses II Tutankhamun and Ramses II were two of the greatest pharaohs of the New Kingdom; they built magnificent monuments, temples, and tombs. Figure 1: Tutankhamun and Ramses II were two of the greatest pharaohs of the New Kingdom; they built magnificent monuments, temples, and tombs Tutankhamun’s burial chamber contained beautiful works of art, text and hieroglyphics. Popularly referred to as “King Tut,” Tutankhamun was a boy-king of the 18th dynasty who ruled from around 1332 BC – 1323 BC. As part of his religious restoration of the god Amun, Tutankhamun initiated the building of many monuments and temples dedicated to Amun at Thebes and Karnak. Tutankhamun’s tomb in the Valley of the Kings was discovered almost completely intact, making it the most complete ancient Egyptian royal tomb ever found. Relics from his tomb are among the most traveled artifacts in the world. Ramses II, a pharaoh of the 19th dynasty, is often regarded as the greatest pharaoh of the Egyptian Empire and is known for his construction of cities, temples and monuments. Using art as a means of self-promotion, Ramses erected colossal statues of himself and illustrated his victories over foreigners on numerous temple reliefs. Among his most famous works are the capital city of Pi-Ramesses which was built at his command; the archaeological complex of Abu Simbel; and his mortuary temple known as the Ramesseum. Note: A relief is a type of artwork in which shapes or figures protrude from a flat background. Propaganda is a concerted set of messages aimed at influencing the opinions or behavior of large numbers of people. -

Orient-Institut Studies 1 (2012) – Rethinking Totalitarianism and its Arab Readings Götz Nordbruch The Arab World and National Socialism – Some reflections on an ambiguous relationship <1> In recent years, Nazi German history has attracted growing interest among Arab scholars and generally among a wider Arab public. Although attention is often paid to events related to the Second World War, the focus of interest increasingly includes National Socialist politics and ideology. Such attention to National Socialism among Arab audiences is not a new phenomenon. While discussions of Nazi German history were rare in most of the post-war period, the situation during the 1930s and 1940s was very different. <2> Events in National Socialist Germany were closely followed in Cairo, Beirut or Baghdad. In countless articles and commentaries, Arab observers wrote about the dissolution of the Reichstag, the persecution of Jews, the Nuremberg Laws and the militarist nature of German society under Hitler 's rule. Numerous memoirs, autobiographies and letters by prominent politicians and intellectuals, which have become available over recent decades, expose the attention directed by contemporaries to Germany 's domestic and international politics.1 Assessments of these developments were manifold – and often widely divergent. Many observers were fascinated by Hitler 's rise to power and his presumed modernization of German society, economy and the army; others were repelled by totalitarian rule, the racial theories on which it was built and its revisionist policies towards its neighbours. <3> This article questions two paradigms which continue to characterize historical studies of Arab responses to Nazi Germany. The first reading of Arab-Nazi German encounters suggests that responses to Nazism were mainly characterized by collusion with National Socialist ideology and its representatives in the region. -

We suggest an earlier date for the accession of the pharaoh Akhenaten of the New Kingdom in Egypt. His first year of reign would be placed in 1382 BCE. This conjecture is based on the possible witness of three annular eclipses of the sun during his lifetime: in 1399, 1389, and 1378 BCE. They would explain the motivefor his worshipof the sun that left its mark onlater religious communities. Evidence from Akhenaten’s era is scarce, though some lateral dependencies can be disentangled on implementing the historical course of the subsequent events. BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORY NOTE: Henry Hathaway (1898 – 1985) was born Henri Leopold de Fiennes on March 13, 1889, in Sacramento, California, to actress Jean Weil and stage manager Henry Rhody. He started his career as a child film actor in 1911. In 1915 Hathaway quit school and went to work at Universal Studios as a laborer, later becoming a property man. He was recruited for service during World War I in 1917, Hathaway saw his time in the army as an opportunity to get an education. He was never deployed, contracting the flu during the 1918 influenza pandemic. After being discharged from the army in 1918, Hathaway pursued a career in financing but returned to Hollywood to work as a property man at Samuel Goldwyn Studios and Paramount Studios. By 1924 Hathaway was working as an Assistant Director at Paramount Studios, under directors such as Josef von Sternberg, Victor Fleming, Frank Lloyd, and William K. Howard.
