NEGATIVE HEALTH AND ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS OF REUSABLE SHOPPING BA GS BY Anthony van Leeuwen 12 December 2012 INTRODUCTION The reusable shopping bag has been touted as an environmentally friendly alternative to plastic and paper disposable carry out bags. But is it? Proponents always mention the advantages of the reusable bag but fail to mention the disadvantages. For example, if reusable shopping bags are not washed on a regular basis, there will be a buildup of bacteria, yeast, mold, and coliforms which if they come in contact with food items could be a potential health hazard. In addition, the reusable shopping bag can also act as a carrier to transmit contagious viruses that could make other people ill. Washing shopping bags will maintain them in a sanitary condition; however, that means the use of water, electricity, natural gas, soap and bleach and generation of greenhouse gases on a recurring and continual basis. This makes the reusable shopping bag the least environmentally friendly bag available. Also, using water and energy to maintain a bag in a sanitary condition when off-the-shelf sanitary plastic and paper bags exist, is a waste of resources, resources that consumers have been instructed to conserve, and resources that consumers will have to pay for! INTRODUCTION The improper disposal of used plastic bags has been known to cause long-term damage to the ecosystem and the natural environment. Plastic waste takes a long time to degrade in soil and contributes to air, water, and soil pollution. Plastic bags that end up in landfills bring significant environmental burden that relates to resource use (EPA, 2016). There is a significant body of scientific evidence on the environmental impacts of plastics, including plastic bags, on the marine environment. Single-use plastic bags, also referred to as disposable plastic bags, are highly visible and mobile in the environment, entangling and choking marine life that approach or ingest them. In economic terms, single-use plastic bags in the environment represent a negative externality because their manufacturers and users do not pay for the societal and environmental costs of utilizing them. To reduce its costly environmental impact, several countries have already imposed taxes on plastic bags, while others have even gone so far as to implement a total ban. In this connection, this paper aims to provide a brief background information on plastics and plastic bags, the emerging trends in the regulation thereof in different countries, the existing plastic bag regulations implemented in selected local government units (LGUs) in the country, and the emerging proposal on the excise tax on plastic bags. REUSABLE BAGS FOR A REUSABLE ENVIRONMENT Taking the Confusion Out of Environmentally Friendly Bag Options ALBURY ENVIRO BAGS Introduction Based upon an extensive review of the available evidence, this article seeks to assist consumers in choosing the reusable shopping bag fabric which best suits their needs. It is an attempt to cut through the confusion of the public shopping bag debate by enabling the consumer to form an evidence-based evaluation of the various reusable bag options. Due to the environmental costs of single use throw away bags, these bags were not considered in this article. In considering the pros and cons of the various options it is not possible to supply a definitive answer as to which fabric is the ‘best’ or even whether one fabric is better than another in ALL applications. One vitally important general principal does emerge however, and that is the issue of durability and useful life span. Environmental advantages are strongly linked to the useful life span of the bag and therefore are heavily dependent upon consumers looking after their bags and reusing them for as long as possible. A quality reusable natural fibre bag may be worse for the environment than a single use bag if it is disposed of after being used for only 20% of its useful life. This fact heavily influences the evaluation of the various fabrics below. Another reason why definitive answers cannot be provided is because there are so many unknowns, one of these relating to the accumulation of microplastics in the environment. All plastic bags which find their way into the eco system eventually degrade into tiny pieces of plastic, perhaps invisible to the naked eye, and these are accumulating in the environment.
