Daily Mass Remembrance During all Masses in November, the Cathedral of Patrick will lift in prayer those who have gone before us in death. To have your loved ones remembered at these Masses, we welcome you to complete an “All Souls Day Remembrance” envelope and place it in the Sunday collection basket or the donation boxes in the side entrances of the Ca- thedral. The names of those written on the enve- lope will be silently remembered by the priest of- fering Mass each day. These envelopes are avail- able on the tables in the Cathedral, in addition to all parishioners’ offertory envelope sets.

Purple Candles To have your loved one remembered with a can- dle, please complete a “Remembering our Beloved De- ceased” envelope located in the front of the Cathe- dral near the Our Lady of Sorrows statue. Place the completed envelope with your donation in the petition slot of the candle stand. Fr. Roux will bless and light a purple candle in memory of your decreased loved one.

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May all the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

Writing on the Eastern Catholic Churches, St. John Paul II famously said that "the Church must breathe with her two lungs." He was referring to the fact that Catholics of "both lungs" of the Church - Eastern and Western (Latin) - should experience, be familiar with, and be nourished by the "other lung." In fact, he devoted an entire Apostolic FB: “The Cathedral of St. Patrick - Young Adult Ministry” Letter to the subject, in which he taught the following: Instagram: @stpatricksyam "Since, in fact, we believe that the venerable and ancient E-mail: [email protected] tradition of the Eastern Churches is an integral part of the Web: www.stpatricks.org/yam heritage of Christ's Church, the first need for Catholics is to be familiar with that tradition, so as to be nourished by CONGRATULATIONS, FATHER! it and to encourage the process of unity in the best way possible for each. The four pillars of parish stewardship are hospitality, prayer, formation and service. On December 9th 1531, life was forever changed for a 57-year-old peasant man from Tepeyac, Mexico named Juan Diego. As he was walking to Mass in in the early morning, Our Lady appeared to him with an in important message. She asked Juan to go to the Bishop and request that a church be built in her honor at the site of the apparition. Upon visiting the bishop, Juan was unable to convince him of the authenticity of his vision and he was dismissed. However, three days later our Lady appeared again to Juan Diego and he returned to the Bishop with his request. The bishop, still unbeliev- ing, asked Juan to bring him a sign from our Lady. When she appeared to Juan a third time she instructed him to go the top of the hill, collect the flowers there, and keep them in his tilma until he arrived to speak with the bishop. When Juan arrived and opened his tilma, the roses fell to the floor exposing an image or our Lady imprinted on the inside of his gar- ment. Having also appeared to Juan's sick uncle, and curing him, she stated that she wished to be known as “Santa Maria de Guadalupe”. Much like the Miracle of the Sun that took place in Fatima, science cannot explain many of the aspects surrounding the tilma of Juan Diego. The fabric itself, composed of a cactus cloth, has not deteriorated in 470 years while it should have deteriorated after only 20 – 30 years. Upon examining the image on the cloth, researchers have found the reflection in the eyes of Mary to be that of Juan Diego, Bishop Juan de Zummaraga, and others present at the meeting. In addition, the stars on her cloak are arranged in the exact way that they would have been in the sky on the day she appeared. On October 12, 1945, Pope Pius XII decreed Our Lady of Guadalupe to be "Patroness of all the Americas." Later in 1999, Pope Saint John Paul II declared her feast day, celebrated on December 12th, to be a Holy Day of Obligation for the entire continent. SAINTS IN TRAINING Formation for young children learning the Faith to become saints Our Lady of Guadalupe Can you solve the puzzle? In December of 1531, a poor farmer named Juan Diego heard birds and saw the Virgin Mary on Tepeyac Hill in Unscramble each of the clues, found in the reading. Use the Mexico. She identified herself as the ever Virgin Holy letters that appear in boxes and unscramble them for the Mary, Mother of the True God for whom we live, of the final message. Creator of all things, Lord of heaven and the earth. She asked Juan Diego to build a church on the hill, where an Aztec temple once stood. The bishop wasn’t so sure, and asked Juan Diego for a sign. Mary returned two signs! First, Juan Diego returned to the hill to find roses, even though it was mid-December. And Our Lady also left an image on his tilma, or his robe made out of cactus. We celebrate Juan Diego’s feast on December 9, and Our Lady of Guada- lupe’s feast on December 12. SAINTS OF THE WEEK Sunday, October 20: St. Bertilla Boscardin—Virgin St. Bertilla was born Anna Francesca Boscardin to a poor peasant family on October 6, 1888 in Brendola, Italy. Due to her poverty, she wasn’t able to receive a formal education. She was regularly mistreated by her alcoholic father who called her “goose” for her perceived lack of intelligence. In 1904, she joined the Sisters of St. Doro- thy. Her first three years with the order involved cooking and cleaning the laundry. Bertilla then began working as a nurse in the hospital of Treviso where she became popular with the child patients. She also aided wounded soldiers during World War I. As a result of her growing popularity, a superior had her demoted back to laundry. The head of her order found out, and placed Bertilla in charge of the children’s ward of the hospital.

Monday, October 21: St. —Hermit St. Hilarion was born in Tabatha, Palestine to pagan parents in the year 291. He went to study in where he converted to . Hilarion devoted much of his time to prayer and fasting. Inspired by St. Anthony of Egypt, he moved to Egypt to become his . Hilarion set up a hermitage in Majuma, Israel where he built himself a hut and slept on the ground. His life was spent in meditation upon scripture, prayer, fasting, and mortifications. He was tempted frequently by the devil, but triumphed over the lures of Satan. Numerous miracles were attributed to Hilarion while he was still alive. Desiring to escape fame, he returned to Egypt, then to Sicily, then Croatia, and finally Cyprus. He founded several hermitages during his travels. Tuesday, October 22: St. Mary Salome—Disciple St. Mary Salome was the wife of Zebedee and the mother of two apostles of Christ: St. and St. . She is mentioned multiple times in the Gospels as being one of the three who fol- lowed Christ during His public ministry and helped finance the disciples’ travels. In Matthew 20: 20, she asked Jesus to let her sons sit and His left and right in Heaven. Mary Salome was present at the foot of the cross during the Crucifixion, and she was present with St. to anoint the body of Christ when they learned about the Resurrection. It is believed by some that following the Ascension, she traveled to Veroli, Italy where she proclaimed the Gospel for the remainder of her life. Wednesday, October 23: St. Oda—Virgin and Hermit St. Oda was a princess born in Scotland in 680. She was blind from birth. Her father sent her to visit the relics of St. Lambert in Liège in the hopes that she would experience a miraculous healing. While praying before the relics, she was able to see. Elated, Oda made a vow to devote her life to God. She returned to Scotland, but was soon pressured by her father to enter an arranged marriage. Oda refused, having devoted herself to God, and she fled to a forest in the Netherlands where she lived in solitude. Her father eventually found her, but was driven away by birds who attacked him. Oda spent the remainder of her life living as a hermit.

Thursday, October 24: St. Martin of Vertou—Abbot and Hermit St. Martin was born in Nantes, France in 527 to a wealthy family. He was appointed archdeacon by St. Felix, who served as Bishop of Nantes. Due to his lack of skill as a preacher, Martin de- cided to withdraw from his position and live as a hermit in the Dumen Forest along the Sèvre River in Brittany. As a hermit, he gained a large following of disciples and served as Abbot of the Vertou Abbey which he founded. It is believed that he was led to the site of the abbey by an angel. Later in his life, he founded the monastery of Saint Jouin-de-Mames and other monasteries. Friday, October 25: Ss. Chrysanthus and Daria— St. Chrysanthus was born in the third century to noble family in Alexandria, Egypt. His family moved to , where he met the priest, Carpophorus, and was converted to Christianity. Chrysanthus married a Greek priestess of Minerva named Daria. He was able to convert his wife to Christianity, and he baptized her himself. The couple agreed to live chastely. After converting numerous pagans in Rome, the couple was condemned for being Christian and subjected to tortures. The Roman tribune overseeing the torture, Claudius, was impressed by their zeal, and he and his household were also converted. The emperor found out about these conversions and had Daria sent to a brothel, where she was protected by a lion. The two were eventually stoned and buried alive in a sand-pit where they received their martyrdom. Saturday, October 26: St. Cedd—Bishop St. Cedd was born around the year 620 in . He was the brother of St. Chad. Cedd was edu- cated by St. Aidan in and became one of his disciples. He was ordained a priest. At the invitation of Peada of , Cedd set our to evangelize the Middle Angles in 653. The following year, he was sent to where he converted King Sigbert to Christianity. As a result of his success as a preacher, Cedd was elevated to the episcopacy. He spent the remainder of his life founding vari- ous monasteries. He also served as interpreter at the . INTERESTEDINTERESTED ININ BECOMIBECOMINGNG AA MEMBERMEMBER OFOF THE CATHEDRAL OF SAINT PATRICK? Church membership is an obligation of discipleship and love that derives from being united with Christ. A person becomes a member of the Catholic Church through Baptism. At the Cathedral, active membership is a requirement for the celebration of a marriage or baptism, for one to be eligible to be a Godparent or Confor- mation sponsor, and for special benefits such as tuition subsidy at a Catholic school. There are certain mini- mum requirements for parish membership called the precepts of the Church. The following are three of those precepts and how the Cathedral of Saint Patrick looks upon them in relation to parish membership.

 ATTENDANCE AT WEEKLY MASS. The first precept of the Church requires the faithful to participate in the Eucharistic celebration when the Christian community gathers together on the day commemorating the Res- urrection of the Lord (CCC #2042) and on holy days of obligation (CCC #2043). Since the Cathedral’s weekly Mass attendance envelopes are the primary way we determine if parishioners are regularly attending Mass, pa- rishioners must place their envelopes in the collection basket every Sunday regardless of whether one makes a financial contribution. If a parishioner gives online or prefers to place cash in the offertory basket, an empty Mass attendance envelope should still be placed in the basket with "I attended Mass" checked.  RECEIPT OF THE SACRAMENTS. The third & fourth precept of the Church states the faithful must ensure preparation for the Eucharist by the reception of the sacrament of reconciliation at least once a year, and the re- ception of Holy Communion at least once a year during the season (CCC #2042) and join in fast and abstinence during Lent.  SUPPORT OF THE CHURCH. The fifth precept of the Church states that the faithful have the duty of providing for the material needs of the Church, each according to their abilities in a regular, identifiable and meaningful way.
