Bringing our organizations together for a single meeting, as we have done previously in 2007 and 2010, is always a great opportunity to reconnect with old friends and make new ones while reinvigorating ourselves by sharing ideas with colleagues. The theme of this year’s meeting is “Inequality, Injustice, and Intersectionality”. One only needs to access your news of choice to see continuing issues of inequality and injustice that have been a focus of sociology since the earliest days of our discipline. Unfortunately these same media outlets often provide limited analyses and attempt neat and easy explanations which ignores the structural sources of such problems. This is why our theme is so important. We know the complexity of these issues. We know the cultural and structural sources of these problems must be highlighted. We know that matters that seem to be racial problems are also about class, and gender and, religion, and segregation. It is important that others come to know this as well. The works of both of this year’s keynote speakers, Douglas Massey and Lori Peek, highlight the intersection of topics like ethnicity, immigration, identity, segregation, and economic inequality serve to highlight the value of understanding complexity. The meeting will include professional development opportunities for sociologists at different points in their career and in different career paths. Meeting attendees will have opportunities to participate in workshops to build their teaching and research skills. High school sociology instructors will be here on the first day of the conference alongside an Alpha Kappa Delta mini conference. We also have scheduled workshops designed to assist those doing quantitative and qualitative date collection, and on the role of sociology in general education. Finally we want to highlight both MSS and NCSA as organizations with long histories of supporting young scholars and helping them develop through the conference experiences. New faculty members, high school sociologists, graduate students, and undergrads as well often have their first conference experiences with our organizations-- it is important that we don’t lose that element during these combined meetings. With that in mind, we ask you to please make time in your schedule to attend the undergraduate roundtables on Thursday and Friday, seek out graduate student papers and give them all feedback. Combined meetings like these are a great opportunity for professional socialization which will only make our discipline stronger. We hope you enjoy your time in Chicago and take advantage of the program we’ve assembled. There are several unique workshops and panels that will highlight new innovations in our discipline and higher education in general, and of course the papers that are the heart of any conference. Again, welcome and thanks for participating.
