System Archetypes as a Learning Aid Within a Tourism Business Planning Software Tool G. Michael McGrath Centre for Hospitality and Tourism Research, Victoria University, Melbourne Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT Various studies have identified a need for improved business planning among Small-to-Medium Tourism Enterprise (SMTE) operators. The tourism sector is characterized by complexity, rapid change and interactions between many competing and cooperating sub-systems. System dynamics (SD) has proven itself to be an excellent discipline for capturing and modelling precisely this type of domain. In this paper, we report on an SD-based Tourism Enterprise Planning Simulator (TEPS) and its use as a learning aid within a business planning context. Particular emphasis is focussed on system archetypes. Keywords: tourism, business planning software, system dynamics. 1. Introduction In a recent study conducted for the Australian Sustainable Tourism Cooperative Research Centre (STCRC), improved business planning was identified as one of the most pressing needs of Small-to- Medium Tourism Enterprise (SMTE) operators (McGrath, 2005). A further significant problem confronting these businesses was coping with rapid change: including technological change, major changes in the external business environment, and changes that are having substantial impacts at every point of the tourism supply chain (and at every level – from international to regional and local levels). As a result of these findings, the STCRC provided funding and support for a follow-up research project aimed at producing a Tourism Enterprise Planning Simulator (TEPS). Distinguishing features of TEPS are: • Extensive use is made of system dynamics (SD) modelling technologies and tools (for capturing and simulating key aspects of change). -

This brief article seeks to introduce the first of two key ideas in system[s] thinking, relate it to popular writings on the subject and illustrate the concept. (the second part, originally published as a second article, is included below) Interdependence Ludwig von Bertalanffy said that in dealing with complexes of elements, three different kinds of distinction may be made: 1) According to their number, 2) According to their species and 3) According to the relations of elements. 1. vs. 2. vs. 3. vs. In cases 1 and 2, the complex may be understood as the sum of elements considered in isolation. In case 3, not only the elements, but also the relationships between them need to be known for the complex to be understood. Characteristics of the first kind are called summative, of the second kind constitutive. Complexes that are constitutive in nature are what is meant by the old phrase "The whole is more than the sum of the parts." An example of cases 1 and 2 might be the value of the change in your pocket. The value of the change taken altogether is obtained by simply summing up the values of the individual coins taken separately. An example of case 3, used frequently by Russell Ackoff to illustrate a constitutive complex, is a car [or truck if preferred]. -

I never expected that a random email after having read his great book, Systemic Intervention: Philosophy, Methodology, and Practice (2000), would take me to England, and even less to start a PhD in Systems Science. I’m also grateful because he encouraged me to write a paper that I presented at the ISSS 2014 Conference, in Washington DC, on what I thought at the time was General System Theory (GST) but turned out to be Systems Philosophy, and especially for suggesting me, at a time when I nearly gave up the whole endeavour, a possible route to continue my thesis that turned out to be the right one after all. Indeed, Gerald triggered the crucial turning point that made this PhD worthwhile. Thanks for your precious encouragement; otherwise this thesis would have never seen the light. My thanks go to Angela Espinosa and Joan Walker for having introduced me to the practice of systemic interventions, without which I would never have witnessed the powerful potential of systems methodologies. -

PHILOSOPHICAL CONDITIONS FOR SUSTAINABLE OUTCOMES TO COMPLEX SYSTEMIC INTERVENTIONS David Rousseau PhD 1,2,3,* 1 Centre for Systems Philosophy, Surrey, United Kingdom 2 Centre for Systems Studies, Hull University Business School, Hull, East Yorkshire, UK 3 School of Theology, Religious Studies and Islamic Studies, University of Wales Trinity Saint David, Lampeter, Ceredigion, UK * Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT Consideration of Alexander Laszlo’s inspiring vision for a sustainable thriving eco-civilization shows that it is grounded in three important assumptions. These may seem unremarkable at first sight but an analysis of their implications reveals that they commit us to positions that are deeply problematic in the academy. The systems movement will have to help find ways to resolve these issues as a prerequisite for attaining the presented vision. In my view this can be done, and in my presentation I will show what these problems are and how we might approach helping to resolve them. Alexander Laszlo’s three assumptions are that (1) a sustainable thriving eco-civilization is possible, (2) we can bring it about, and (3) it is important that we bring it about. I will show that these three assumptions confront us with three problems the systems movement has struggled with since its inception: (a) the disunity of knowledge and fragmentation of worldviews, (b) the semantic divergence between different disciplines, and (c) the absence of scientific support for non-constructivist theories about values. In situations characterised by complexity and value conflicts these problems subvert collaborative solution design, impede efficient execution of interventions, and undermine broad adoption of the solution features. -

Manifesto for General Systems Transdisciplinarity (GSTD) Dr David Rousseau, Centre for Systems Philosophy, UK Dr Jennifer Wilby, Centre for Systems Studies, University of Hull, UK Julie Billingham, Centre for Systems Philosophy, UK Stefan Blachfellner, Bertalanffy Centre for the Study of the Systems Sciences, Austria The ISSS was founded on an ambition to develop a systems transdiscipline, grounded in a General System Theory (GST), which could be leveraged to build a systemically healthy world that promotes personal dignity, human welfare, international cooperation and environmental stewardship. The ISSS pioneers saw this as an urgently needed response to looming human, social and environmental crises, which at least in part coincide with what we recognise today as the Anthropocene. This ambition and call to action remain as inspiring and pertinent today as they were when the ISSS was founded in 1956 as the Society for the Advancement of General Systems Theory. The crises anticipated by our founders are now upon us, making the founders’ vision and call to action more pertinent than ever. Over the last two years ISSS members David Rousseau, Jennifer Wilby, Julie Billingham and Stefan Blachfellner have been investigating the possibility of accelerating progress towards a General Systems Transdiscipline (GSTD). This was done by working with: • contributors to the ISSS’s SIG on Systems Philosophy and SIG on Research towards a General Theory of Systems in 2013 and 2014, • participants in a special Symposium of the 2014 European Meetings on Cybernetics and Systems Research (EMCSR), • participants in a special 2014 Conversation of the International Federation of Systems Research (IFSR), and • attendees of a 2015 Workshop of the Systems Science Working Group (SysSciWG) of the International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE). -
