Muchas cuestiones, incluso varias de interés nacional, tienen estrecha relación con la Zoogeografía, o con mayor alcance, con la Biogeografía de Argentina” R. A. Ringuelet Physis, 1961 El 10 de septiembre de 2014 se cumplieron cien años del nacimiento de Raúl A. Ringuelet, una de las figuras consulares de las Ciencias Naturales de la Argentina. A modo de homenaje y dentro de las modestas posibilidades de ProBiota, queremos recordar este acontecimiento reuniendo sus principales contribuciones biogeográficas, de las que ya realizaron un excelente análisis Lopretto y Menni durante el 2003. No obstante, entiendo que es oportuno recordar que en 1944, a la edad de 30 años, pública Sinopsis sistemática y zoogeográfica de los Hirudíneos de la Argentina, Brasil, Chile, Paraguay y Uruguay. Además, en su trayectoria docente en la Facultad de Ciencias Naturales y Museo de la UNLP, crea la Cátedra de Zoogeografía (1958), la de Ecología y Zoogeografía (1960) y posteriormente la de Biogeografía (1981). Como alumno de esta última materia, no puedo dejar de mencionar que las autoridades de ese momento le hacían dictar sus clases en un subsuelo de un edificio céntrico, con luz artificial, humedad y otros elementos que conspiraban contra su salud ya deteriorada. -

RINGUELET SUMMARY: The zoogeography and ecology of fresh water fishes from Argentina and comments on ichthyogeography of South America. This study comprises a critical review of relevant literature on the fish fauna, genocentres, means of dispersal, barriers, ecological groups, coactions, and ecological causality of distribution, including an analysis of allotopic species in the lame lake or pond, the application of indexes of diversity of severa¡ biotopes and comments on historical factors. Its wide scope allows to clarify several aspects of South American Ichthyogeography. The location of Argentina ichthyological fauna according to the above mentioned distributional scheme as well as its relation with the most important hydrography systems are also provided, followed by additional information on its distribution in the Argentine Republic, including an analysis through the application of Simpson's similitude test in several localities. The genetic variability of Oligosarcus paranensis was estimated from a population collected in São Francisco river, Prudentópolis county in Paraná State (Brazil) using the electrophoresis in starch gel technique. Eleven enzymatic systems were analyzed: Aspartate aminotransaminase (AAT; E. C. 2.6.1), Alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH; E. C. 1.1.1.1), Esterase (EST; E. C. 3.1.1.1), Glucose-6-phosphate isomerase (GPI; E. C. 5.3.1.9), Glycerol-3-Phosphate dehydrogenase (G3PDH; E. C. 1.1.1), Isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH; E. C. 1.1.1.42), L-lactate dehydrogenase (LDH; E. C. 1.1.1.27), Malate dehydrogenase (MDH; E. C. 1.1.1.37 ), Malate dehydrogenase NADP (ME; E. C. 1.1.1.40), Phosphoglucomutase (PGM; E. C. 5.4.2.2) and Sorbitol dehydrogenase (SORB; E.C. 1.1.1.14). Twenty loci were identified through 15% corn starch gel electrophoresis of which nine (45%) were polymorphic. The average expected heterozygosity was estimated as 0.1229 ± 0.1728, and the observed was 0.0586 ± 0.1069, indicating high genetic variability. The average value of FIS = 0.5145 indicates homozygote excess. -

Así descubrí que, mientras en algunas disciplinas resultaba fácil encontrar obras en una lengua autóctona o traducida, en otras brillaban por su ausen- cia. Albert From a study of morphological and molecular datasets we determine that a species originally described as Sternarchogiton preto does not form a monophyletic group with the other valid species of Sternarchogiton including the type species, S. nattereri. Previously-published phylogenetic analyses indicate that this species is sister to a diverse clade comprised of six described apteronotid genera. We therefore place it into a new genus diagnosed by the presence of three cranial fontanels, first and second infraorbital bones independent (not fused), the absence of an ascending process on the endopterygoid, and dark brown to black pigments over the body surface and fins membranes. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Cladistic analysis of external morphology and skeletal characters of Apteronotidae (Teleostei: Gymnotyiformes). Cladistic analysis of external morphology and skeletal characters was undertaken for 37 species of Apteronotidae, Neotropical electric fishes. Orthosternarchus + Sternarchorhamphus (included here in Sternarchorhamphinae status novo) are proposed to be the sister taxa to all remaining apteronotids, most of which form a basal polytomy in Apteronotinae. Several apteronotid species are currently incertae sedis but the monophyly of several genera were corroborated. Sternarchorhynchus is proposed to be the sister group of Ubidia magdalensis + Platyurosternarchus macrostomus, together forming the Sternarchorhynchini. Snout elongation was revealed to have occurred in several independent evolutionary lines as the Sternar- chorhynchini, Orthosternarchus and Sternarchorhamphus. Apteronotus is restricted here to A. albifrons + A. jurubidae and postulated to be the sister group to Parapteronotus, which includes P. hasemani + P. macrostomus. “Apteronotus” leptorhynchus is postulated to be the sister group to “Apteronotus” -

In this study, I investigated the reproductive biology of fish species from the family Characidae of the order Characiformes. I also investigated the relationship between reproductive biology and body weight and interpreted this relationship in a phylogenetic context. The results of the present study contribute to the understanding of the evolution of the reproductive strategies present in the species of this family. Most larger characid species and other characiforms exhibit a reproductive pattern that is generally characterized by a short seasonal reproductive period that lasts one to three months, between September and April. This is accompanied by total spawning, an extremely high fecundity, and, in many species, a reproductive migration. Many species with lower fecundity exhibit some form of parental care. Although reduction in body size may represent an adaptive advantage, it may also require evolutionary responses to new biological problems that arise. In terms of reproduction, smaller species have a tendency to reduce the number of oocytes that they produce. Many small characids have a reproductive pattern similar to that of larger characiforms. On the other hand they may also exhibit a range of modifications that possibly relate to the decrease in body size and the consequent reduction in fecundity.
