UN MODEL DE SOLUţiONARE A CONFLICTELOR PENTRU ACTUALELE SUPERPUTERI* ALEXANDRU MADGEARU ** Abstract The campaign led by John Tzimiskes in Bulgaria against Svyatoslav in 971 could be con- sidered an example of conflict resolution and peace-building, according to the terminology of the present military science (the concepts are usually applied to modern international and civil wars). The complexity of that conflict involving, besides the Byzantine and Rus’ armies, the Bulgarians who were fighting in coalition with both parts, required a step by step conflict resolution, a particular way to treat with the enemy. For instance, Tzimiskes gave amnesty to those Bulgarians who fought on the side of the Rus’, before the end of the siege of Dorostolon. He wished to be seen as a liberator of Bulgaria (the capital Preslav conquered by the Rus’ in 968 was occupied by the Byzantine army during the 971 campaign). Later on, the emperor permitted the retreat of the enemy from Dorostolon, but ensuring a future alliance with the Pechenegs to prevent other invasions. For a present-day superpower like it was the Byzantine Empire in the 10th century, the evolution of this conflict provides some lessons of peace-buil- ding, such as the temporary recognition of the legitimate ruler of the invaded state (Boris II was freed by the Byzantine army), and the amnesty for those internal forces who fought on the side of the enemy. The victory of 971 was followed by an administrative organization that split in several parts the territory of Bulgaria, but this kind of conflict resolution proved to be not successful to annihilate the revival of that state after five years, by a rebellion in a peripheral area. This is another lesson for the present powers who are settling fundamentally different administration in a defeated country. When the sabbath came, He began to teach in the syna- gogue, and many who heard Him were aston- ished. They said, “Where did this Man get all this? What kind of wisdom has been given Him? What mighty deeds are wrought by His hands! Is He not the carpenter, the Son of Mary, and the brother of James and Joses and Judas and Si- mon? And are not His sisters here with us?” And they took offense at Him. Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in His native place and among His own kin and in His own house.” So He was not able to perform any mighty deeds there, apart from curing a few sick people by laying His hands on them. He was amazed at their lack of faith. ~Mark 6: 1-6a Happy Independence Day! God our Father, Giver of life, we entrust the United States of America to Your loving care. Frazee When Saint Vincent de Paul organized the Congrega- tion of the Mission and the Daughters of Charity, one of his aims was to provide a group of men and women who would work in foreign lands on behalf of the Church. He held firm opinions on the need for such a mission since at the very heart of Christ's message was the charge to go to all nations preaching the Gospel. St. Vincent believed that the life of a missionary would win more converts than theological arguments. Hence his instructions to his dis- ciples were always meant to encourage them to lead lives of charity and concern for the poor. This article will describe the extension of Vincent's work into the Islamic world. Specifically, it will touch on the Vincentian experience in North Africa, the Ottoman Empire (including Turkey, the Near East, and Balkan countries), and Persia (Iran).

  • 'Made in China': a 21St Century Touring Revival of Golfo, A
FROM ‘MADE IN GREECE’ TO ‘MADE IN CHINA’ ISSUE 1, September 2013 From ‘Made in Greece’ to ‘Made in China’: a 21st Century Touring Revival of Golfo, a 19th Century Greek Melodrama Panayiota Konstantinakou PhD Candidate in Theatre Studies, Aristotle University ABSTRACT The article explores the innovative scenographic approach of HoROS Theatre Company of Thessaloniki, Greece, when revisiting an emblematic text of Greek culture, Golfo, the Shepherdess by Spiridon Peresiadis (1893). It focuses on the ideological implications of such a revival by comparing and contrasting the scenography of the main versions of this touring work in progress (2004-2009). Golfo, a late 19th century melodrama of folklore character, has reached over the years a wide and diverse audience of both theatre and cinema serving, at the same time, as a vehicle for addressing national issues. At the dawn of the 21st century, in an age of excessive mechanization and rapid globalization, HoROS Theatre Company, a group of young theatre practitioners, revisits Golfo by mobilizing theatre history and childhood memory and also by alluding to school theatre performances, the Japanese manga, computer games and the wider audiovisual culture, an approach that offers a different perspective to the national identity discussion. KEYWORDS HoROS Theatre Company Golfo dramatic idyll scenography manga national identity 104 FILMICON: Journal of Greek Film Studies ISSUE 1, September 2013 Time: late 19th century. Place: a mountain village of Peloponnese, Greece. Golfo, a young shepherdess, and Tasos, a young shepherd, are secretly in love but are too poor to support their union. Fortunately, an English lord, who visits the area, gives the boy a great sum of money for rescuing his life in an archaeological expedition and the couple is now able to get engaged.

The collection first appeared as a book in 1924 in Paris titled in our time followed in 1925 by the much- expanded In Our Time. Hemingway finally added the story “On The Quai at Smyrna” in 1930 preceding the rest of the text as his Introduction, which is the final substantive form of the book apart from the addition of the title for the Introduction in 1938.

February 2019 Thessaloniki - Greece iii Abstract This thesis was written as part of the MA in Black Sea and Eastern Mediterranean Studies at the International Hellenic University. The main topic is popular music in the Greek press of Thessaloniki during the decade 1912-1922. Initially, it is examined, how in the process of nation-building nationalistic agendas took shape in the field of culture – music, art, dance –, and the media – literature, press. The forging of national identity in Greece, was intimately connected with the need to assert cultural continuity between ancient, Byzantine and modern Greece; this connection was traced in the “pure” rural musical idioms of the Greek countryside. Literacy assisted in this direction, with Folklore studies on the one side, and the Greek press – which forms the topic of this thesis – on the other. The newly incorporated lands after the Balkan Wars and World War I (“Nees Chores” of Northern Greece) including the city of Thessaloniki, posed a challenge towards this direction of utilizing rural musical idioms for national consolidation.
