5 Mitchell Cricket Council Annual Report 2016-17 PRESIDENTS REPORT

Season 2016-17 saw a return of Inter-Council matches at Opens level, which was quite unexpected after the events of previous seasons. Mitchell performed well in both matches, with a win over Macquarie Valley and a loss to Lachlan. The strong win against Macquarie Valley was enough to give us the edge over the competition to secure the Merv Wilkie Perpetual Trophy, our first since 2012/13.

We again fielded teams in Under 12s, 14s and 16s Western Zone competitions and Under 13 and Under 15 teams in the Western NSW Junior Carnivals. All of our teams performed well, with special mention to Mark Frecklington Under 12s and Under 14s for winning their respective competitions and Mitchell CC President out Under 15s for making the final of the Western NSW carnival. Full details of each of these teams efforts can be found later in this Annual Report. A very big thank you to everyone has helped with our teams this season. Without you our players don’t get the opportunity to play.

Congratulations to all players from our Council area who have gone on to represent Western Zone and higher, with a special mention to Luke Powell who represented ACT-NSW Country at the National Under 17 championships.

Blue Mountains pulled probably the surpise of the season by winning the Mitchell Colts competition this season. After a washout against Bathurst on thre Friday, they claimed the scalps of Orange and Mudgee over the rest of the weekend to finish level with Bathurst on points. A superior net run rate gave the Cattle Pups the title; their first ever in this competition.

Bathurst won their seventh straight Presidents Cup title.

Twenty20 cricket was introduced into our competitions for the first time this season, with the Rod Hartas Trophy being played in this format and a separate T20 competition for Presidents Cup teams also being held. The intent of introducing T20 cricket was to help with the selection and performace of the Central West Wranglers side, which is seelcted from players from our Council area.

Unfortunately the Rod Hartas Trophy was postponed after the tragic death of Mudgee captain, Cameron Cox and ultimately cancelled when suitable dates were unable to be found to reschedule it. In the T20 Cup, Orange edged out Bathurst with Super Over victory over Bathurst after scores were tied.

Bathurst and Orange shared the spoils in the juniors with Bathurst winning the Under 16s and Orange the 14s and 12s.

I’d personally like to thank Matt Tabbernor for taking on the role of Secretary, as well as continuing as Treasurer, when we were unable to fill the Secretary’s position. Matt can’t continue to do both, so I urge you all to consider putting your hand up for Secretary.

Mark Frecklington President

The Rod Hartas Trophy reverted to a T20 competition for this, to be played over the one weekend between Mudgee, Gulgong and Lithgow. Unfortunately, with the sudden death of Mudgee captain Cameron Cox, the competition was postponed and eventually cancelled when no suitable alternate dates could be found.

10 Mitchell Cricket Council Annual Report 2016-17 Colts

Colts was played as an Under 19 competition for the second season, with teams allowed two Under 21 aged players as part of the transitional provisions put in place last season. Four teams again contested this competition with matches played over the Friday, Saturday and Sunday of one weekend. After Friday’s matches were washed out, Blue Mountains and Bathurst won their two remaining fixtures, with Blue Mountains declared the winning team with a superior net run rate.

Report This year’s Mitchell side had some excellent individual performances throughout the year we had 4 players represent western zone at the Bradman cup; Ben Mitchell, Nicholas Broes, Tanvir Singh and Harry Pearce, and all performed well at the carnival.

We were in strong positions during games but just couldn’t quite finish it off. I’m sure the boys have all learned valuable lessons and will be better for the experience.

In our first game against Macquarie Valley we bowled first. Macquarie made 8 for 163 after we had them 6 for 65. The best of our bowlers were Brendan Pallier (2/26) and Harry Pearce (2/28). Our innings was slow. An excellent 49 from Joe Kay almost got us home, but unfortunately we fell short, dismissed for 138.

Our 2nd game was against Lachlan we batted first and compiled 162. Three boys got starts, Bailey Brien (32) Ben Mitchell (32) and Nic Broes (29) but unfortunately no one was able to convert that to a big score. Once again we bowled well early having Lachlan 6 for 70. A very good seventh partnership saw Lachlan home with 4 wickets in hand. Tanvir Singh (2 for 21) and Ben Mitchell (2/26) were the best of our bowlers.

The boys were given a cricket lesson in our 3rd game against Macquarie Valley in Dubbo. Macquarie Valley, first, compiled 7 for 309 with Brock Larance (122) and Tom Nelson (100) both scoring centuries. All of our bowlers struggled with their length. Our run chase was never able to gain momentum with wickets falling regularly. Ben Mitchell was a stand out with 60 and Alex Brien (41) the only other batsman to show any real resistance.

24 Mitchell Cricket Council Annual Report 2016-17 We finished off the season with a good all-round performance. We batted first against Lachlan and compiled 8 for 246, with Nic Broes (100no) and Aaron Long (35) the main scorers. Our bowling and fielding finally came together as we dismissed Lachlan for 110, thanks to great spells from Luca Wynn (4/13) and Brendan Pallier (4/19).

I would like to thank John Harris for assisting me throughout and the year and Ian Strudwick for all your support and finally thank all the players who represented Mitchell cricket 16s team and wish the boys all the best in their future cricket.

Report The U15 Mitchell team competed in the annual Western NSW carnival from the 16th to the 19th of January. The carnival was played in hot dry conditions on all four days and all the players in the Mitchell team displayed great resilience and determination to maintain a high standard of play despite the soaring temperatures.

Our first game was played against St George on Riawena Oval and after captain Bailey Brien won the toss and batted, we made an excellent score of 7/223 off our 50 overs. A feature of the innings was the solid foundation put down by the early batsmen, as well as some breath-taking hitting and running between the wickets in the last 10 overs. Our bowling performance was also of a high standard and after some early breakthroughs from the quick bowlers, spin bowling reigned supreme on the turning pitch with off spinner, Ben Cant, taking 6 wickets. We dismissed the opposition for 106, more than 100 short of our imposing total.

The second match was played on Country Club Oval on Tuesday against South Coast. Once again, we batted first and scored an impressive 190 off our allotted 50 overs. The runs were shared between several batsmen with no player passing the half century mark for the second day in succession. Upon taking the field, it was obvious that our fast bowling would make batting difficult for our opponents and early wickets put the South Coast lads on the back foot from the first over. Despite some staunch resistance, the middle order we dismissed the opposition for 109. The wickets were shared between the quick bowlers and the spinners.

Our third game was played against Newington College on Jack Brabham Oval in extreme heat and gusty hot winds. Our streak of batting first continued and the top order batsmen struggled against

28 Mitchell Cricket Council Annual Report 2016-17 the Newington tactic of opening the bowling with well flighted off spin. We managed to provide some resistance and posted a reasonable target of 152 thanks largely to an impressive 51 runs scored by Bailey Brien. This was the only half century scored during the week for the Mitchell team. Our bowlers and fieldsmen displayed great commitment to the cause fielding in the difficult conditions for the third consecutive afternoon. Once again our tight bowling contained the opposition batsmen and created pressure which led to wickets being taken. The Newington team managed to survive the 50 overs and finished the match on 9/112. This third straight win paved the way for the Mitchell boys to play in the final against Blacktown the following day.

The final was played at Wade Park and a new pitch had been prepared for the match. The unavailability of two players led to the late call up of two new players, Cameron Laird and Harry Kermode. who quickly fitted into the team. We batted first for the fourth time in the carnival and made solid progress before losing three quick wickets. Our innings never really regained momentum and we were subsequently dismissed for 111 runs. Despite some tight bowling and excellent fielding, we were always going to struggle to dismiss our opponents on a good batting pitch and they managed to pass our score 5 wickets down with around 10 overs to go. The boys applied themselves with great determination but we never really had quite enough runs to win the match. Congratulations to Blacktown on winning the carnival and remaining undefeated for the four days.

I would like to congratulate all the boys in the team for the enthusiastic and professional manner in which they played their cricket during the carnival. The cricket that was played throughout the week was of a high level and the boys showed exemplary sportsmanship throughout the entire carnival. I would also like to thank Mr Matt Long for his invaluable assistance as team manager, particularly with his thoughtful warm up activities at the start of each innings. I would also like to thank a number of parents who assisted in scoring and umpiring during the week, as well as Mr David Cumming, Mr Ian Strudwick and Mr Mark Frecklington who provided invaluable assistance before and during the carnival. It was a great pleasure to coach the Mitchell U15 team and I wish the boys the best of luck in their future cricketing endeavours.

Mr Phillip Cant

42 Mitchell Cricket Council Annual Report 2016-17 TREASURERS REPORT

It is great pleasure and an honour to present the Treasurer’s Report for the year ending 30th April 2017. Again, there was numerous changes to Mitchell and Western Zone competitions throughout this season which had budget and financial impact. The biggest change was the changing of the financial year to finish on the 30th April each year. The financial result for the council shows a net profit of $1,238.93. This is smaller than previous years but with the change of financial year above, saw some income that was received in May being recorded in the 2017/18 financials. I believe at the moment the levies imposed are right and will not need to be increased. The following grants were paid out this season: Hampton Cricket Club (Lithgow) $2,275 The MCC Committee has also approved the following grants when construction begins Blue Mountains CA $4,000 Orange DCA $4,000 Mudgee DCA $4,000 Ryan Peacock (UK Tour) $500 CYMS Cricket Club (Orange) $4,000 Application for grants for the 2017/18 season are now open. Successful applicants will receive cheques with presentation of an invoice when the project has started. There are no outstanding accounts to be paid and all associations are financial. I thank all associations for their prompt payment of the levies to ensure the council can function and accounts can be paid in a timely manner Matthew Tabbernor Hon. Treasurer
