Highlights of the year ware a well staged Boil Zatopek Trophy series in conjunction with the Victorian Athletic Association, showing a small profit for both, the well attended Puna 32®2km Beach Bash as a p re-Marathon tryout, the Laser i Marathon which fills the gap for those who find the National Marathon too early in the season for them and. the Richmond Harriers' popular 10 Miles on the traffic-free Burnley Boulevard® There has been further improved attention to the need for assistance on race day, but we still had to make do with insufficient officials on several occasions to barely scramble through and leave weaknesses in the organisation* It must be becoming more obvious to many of our regulars that the matter of having sufficient MARSHALS is the key to having an orderly finish to our races so that everyone can get their correct placing and consequently also their correct time when the results are matched up* Participation by women is still lagging and it is a matter for the whole of our member ship to improve this situation* Development of more local running groups, diversifica tion of running venues, active assistance in caring for dependent family members, a development of better understanding of the principles in physical education, etc* must be tackled if we really mean equality of opportunity for alio While avoiding heavy over*-commercial! sat ion to protect the independence and control by our own membership, we have been supported by several sponsors who have respected this important principle so necessary for the proper development , both in participation and raising of standards,in distance running# We are grateful for their consideration and acknowledge our thanks tot RUNNERS WORLD - provision of premises, sponsorship of Midnite Sun and Hnil Zatopek* PUMA - 32.2km Beach Run. LASER - Mid-Tear Half Marathon at Buraleyo WESTS© LIGHT - Major sponsorship for VMC HR / VAA E.Z. week combined events• However, all this would not be possible without the preparedness to put in time, thought and effort by all our members in attending to the 1001 tasks necessary throughout the year to keep our races functioning to the satisfaction of all participants* This applies especially so to the ones shouldering the responsibility of committee tasks as well as management tasks on race days* We have many capable people in our midst, some have contributed more than others, we've all got our prioritieso What is important is to realise that a self-help organisation such as the VMC RR can only retain its character by finding a place somewhere in our own priorities to make an input towards its aims: Maximum satisfaction for all those who take part - With a minimum of fuss I Fred Lester

If anyone has any queries as to accuracy of recording in times and placings, it is very important to realise that this hinges greatly on having enough people assisting at the events. If there are any inaccuracies in the placings or timings, these would be due to some runners not following the finish marshals directions to stay in the line as required until AFTER their names have been recorded in correct sequence. Surely, this is not too much to ask. It is for your own satisfaction in the end It VMC NEWSLETTER AUTUMN 1905 MARCH VOL 17 NO 1 by Trevo r W ester manHONOLULU MARATHON. 1984 by Trevor WestermanHONOLULU I was fortunate to be part of a Sydnay-based group which travelled to the 1984 Honolulu Marathon on 9th December. This remarkable event certainly deserves its reputation as the ’people’s marathon1. At the elite end, the winners1 times were not outstanding, though very good by the past standards of the race, and for a location within the tropics. Jorge Gonzales was first in 2:16.25, and Patti Gray (54th overall) won the womens1 in 2:42.50. Conditions in general were kinder to distance running than we had been led to believe: fine weather (despite heavy rain an hour before the start), starting temperature about 18 with the temperature after three-and-a-half hours about 22 (however it then became warmer, a disadvantage for the four-hours-plus finishers), and cloud cover most of the way. The elite suffered from a stiff headwind between 13km and 22km, but this became a welcome tailwind for the ’mugs’ between 26km and 33km. Although only a tiny proportion of the field, Australians were well represented among the first one hundred finishers: Philip Garvin of Canberra, 23rd, 2:34.14; Bill Flanagan of Sydney, 51st, 2:42.29 and Godfrey Franz of Sydney, 100th, 2:50.05. (Bill could have gone faster, but he obviously wanted to stay in the pack with the leading woman and get on the video!) But the event really belongs to the ordinary runner; even most of the post-race video was about the very ordinary, and the very slow, rather than about the elite. At no stage does the event become boring for the runner: there is the fireworks start in the dark on Nimitz Highway, the very large crowds (at 6.3(1am) in Waikiki, the district of the rich at Diamond Head and Kahala, the newer area of Hawaii Kai and the magnificent support of the Americans over the final kilometres back through Kahala and Diamond Head, especially the hill between 37km and 40km. Even along Kalanianole Freeway, where crowds are smaller due to restricted access, the three-hours-plus runners could observe the lead coming the other way. Every drink stop (spaced at an average three kilometres apart) had its own character, including one which featured a full Polynesian Band; a Scottish piper stood at the 25km mark, and a man playing his version of 'Chariots of Fire’ was at the 40km mark. The preceding Friday saw the carbohydrate-loading party, a huge affair, accompanied by T-shirt swapping; non-Americans did well at this, with Ted Paulin doing seemingly brisk business with his ’Big M ’ supplies. Two other features stood out: the elimination of car traffic from any part of the course, indicating how the local population supports the event (Premier Bannon would have had no problams with Honoluly peoplel); the international character of the participants - with three-quarters of non-Americans in the race coming from Japan, together with a large local Japanese-American population, one could almost have passed off a well-placed photograph of oneself as participating in the Tokyo Marathon! - but many other nationa were also present. **************************************************************************************** VETERAN ATHLETICS - VICTORIA by Peg Smith One of the fastest growing athletic clubs in Victoria is the Veterans. Non-members will no doubt recognise club members by the distinctive red heart used as their logo. The popularity of the club stems from the great variety of events catering for both the elite and the beginner, from the very competitive to the fun-runner. Low-key competition is staged weekly at venues throughout Melbourne. Veterans Championships cover cross country, road races, track and field, a marathon and a biathlon. Although the word Championships can be daunting for some, the events are in fact a great deal of fun because of the wide range of ages and abilities. To be a fully-fledged veteran athlete able to take part in all veteran events nationally and internationally, men must be 40 and women, 35. All competition is held in 5-year age groups. The annual membership fee is $8.00, which is great value for so much fun. Membership queries (with s.a.e. please) to : Peter Colthup, 14 Bakers Road, North Dandenong, 3175. This was my first marathon outside Australia - many thanks to VMC for the opportunity to win the trip as 1st Woman club member over the line in the 1903 Crib Point Marathon. My training was interrupted by a back injury, so I swam and cycled and exercised until I was allowed to run once more, I often thought, as I shuffled across the kitchen floor on my backside, that this marathon would be run by the seat of my pants ! However, I managed to put in the mileage required and felt I could run a reasonable if not fast time. For those of you who don't know what it is like as my end of the marathon spectrum, a reasonable time for me is 3.45 to 4 hours. Anything faster requires a tail wind, a waght loss of some 10 kg, the transformation of my 'slow twitch' into 'fast twitch' muscle fibres, and Divine intervention. After spending a couple of days sightseeing in Auckland I flew to Tauranga on the evening of Friday 17th in a small plane seemingly full of school students returning home for the holidays. It was sheer coincidence that I sat next to Gail Reese, the 1903 winner of the Complan, and we introduced ourselves. She was hoping to run 2.50 against my 3.55. Her winning time the previous year had been 2.50.35. Peter Wood, the race organiser, had arranged a billet for me with Murray and Gay Reed- Smith, both marathon runners, Murray an expatriate Australian from Perth. Gay met Gail and me at Tauranga Airport and on the way home took us to the local Athletic Attic to pick up our goody bags containing race numbers and information, fresh fruit (including Kiwi fruit of course), fruit drinks, Complan, marathon sticker, carob lollies, glucose tablets, etc. Gay's beautiful new house was situated right on the shores of an estuary overlooking a causeway that was part of the marathon course. Early the following morning I jogged over 5 km or so of the marathon course with Gay and we later drove over it. It was in 3 sections, from the start at the Domain south along the main street of Tauranga to the racecourse, then back past the start and over the causeway to the middle section which undulated through harbourside suburbs, ret urning to repeat the first, reasonable flat, part of the course, finishing at the Domain. At 12 midday Tauranga Harriers held a half-marathon for men and those women unwilling to tackle the marathon. The weather was glorious (for non-runners), mild and sunny; the course was over narrow, hilly, mostly unshaded country roads through fruit growing and farming countryside, and finished with a circuit of the racecourse. I prayed for rain for the next day as there was no shade at all on the marathon course. Tauranga Harriers ran a successful MarBthon Clinic, with runs every Sunday and a distinctive singlet for participants. Annual runs held in the Bay of Plenty area included a hill climb up and down Mount Maunganui, a Mollenberg Mile held along a long straight flat road in a beachside suburb, and long-distance relays held in the Kaimai Forest Ranges. The BBQ/Pasta Party that evening was held at a local spa, but the marathoners had to compete with two TVs showing the Australia/New Zealand Rugby International live from Sydney. Most of the men congregated round the TVs while the women relaxed and swam in the beautiful hot pool. There was one other overseas guest besides myself, 43-year-old Minoru Muramoto, who was 14th in the Osaka Marathon in 1903 and had won the trip to the Complan. Her best time was 2.46.06, and she had run competitively for 6 years, running in New York, Canada and Honolulu in that time. Her favourite carbo-loading food was sponge cake eaten at 5 am on the morning of the race; Gail Reese's was cold gluggy brown rice eaten at the same hour. At 5 am I preferred to be asleep. There was a group of some 30 women from the Auckland YMCA, who set up a special training course each year for those wishing to compete in the marathon. This group included a 74-year-old who wanted to break 5 hours for the first time. There were approximately 100 women entered and the local Bay of Planty Times featured the marathon with profiles of runners and a list of all competitors with anticipated times and race numbers. A friend had lent me a green-and-gold Australian tracksuit specially for the marathon and I wore it to the start at 0.30am the next morning (over the old faithful VMC T-Shirt). The weather was cloudy but mild (some prayers are answered). I ran the first 15km quite easily; the crowd support was patchy but enthusiastic and much appreciated. It was possible to see both the leading runners and those behind me at several stages over the course. Unaccountably I struggled to run the next 10km in a real trough of depression. Complan Women's Marathon (continued) Between 25 and 30 km it rained lightly, and feeling refreshed and back on the last leg, I still felt able to run the 3,55 I had set myself. My physical condition over the last 7 km was steadily deteriorating; one ear was waterlogged from sponging too vigorously, one foot was sore bacause I had re-tied the shoelaces too tightly, and I had lost con trol of my knees. By 40km I had caught up with and passed some whose backs I had been glaring at for 10 miles, including one woman who had been paced by a male on a bicycle since 25km. I tried to lift my pace and disaster struck in the form of cramping pains in the left calf. I hobbled and limped the last 2 km, missed the entrance to the oval for the finishing line and had to somehow struggle over a low fence to get back on course. I finally crossed the line in 4.02.58, not a Personal Worst, but it felt like it. I was given my finishers1 T-shirt and a small bouquet of flowers as I finished (apt word!) and Gay took me to the recovery marquee. She is a nurse and offered to massage my leg and like a fool I agreed. During this agonising experience another kind person (I think it was Gail) asked me, was I all right, because my lips had turned blue. I lied through gritted teeth and wondered if L*d ever walk again. Presentations were made shortly after. The race was won by Heather Matthews (nee Thompson), who had represented New Zealand in world cross-country championships and had won a Silver Medal in the 3000m at the 1978 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton. She won a trip to the Osaka Marathon. At the other end of the scale the 74-year-old easily broke the 5-hour barrier. With such a small field, and 1st, 2nd and 3rd in 5-year age groups, almost everyone won a prize, even me in my category. After a leisurely bath and an afternoon spent socialising with the hard-working organisers and officials at the local Rugby club, I felt almost human once more. Sadly the future of the Complan Womens1 Marathon is under a cloud. Well organised and well run by Tauranga Harriers and Round Table, entries have declined since it was first staged in 1982. One option to be considered is to turn it into a half-marathon or 20km event instead. Many thanks to my hosts and to the organisers for looking after me so well in their beautiful country. *************************************************************************** ************ BOOK REVIEW : 'FLANAGAN'S RUN1 by Tom McNab from Bruce Walker A few months ago I discovered that I have at least one thing in common with Robert de Castella — we've both read the book 'Flanagan's Run'. This revelation came when reading an article on the Rotterdam Marathon in 'Australian Runner'. Deek thought it was only a so-so book; an assessment with which I would agree. In spite of that, I enjoyed the yarn as I think most runners would. It makes ideal holiday reading, in between those leisurely long runs, as it is guaranteed not to tax the intellect or drain the emotions. Rather, it can be simply enjoyed without any complications. I suspect the story line will have particular appeal to those who have taken a close interest in the exploits of Cliff Young and Geoff Molloy in the Sydney-Melbourne races. The story of 'Flanagan's Run' is based on a real event; the 'Great Bunion Derby' which took place in 1929 from Los Angeles to New York. The race was the idea of one Charles C. Pyle and was probably the climactic event in the United States of the decade - a period which had featured everything from swimming and running to drinking and dancing marathons. Best known among the starters in 1929 were Hannes Kolehmainen of Finland, and Arthur Newton. Kolehmainen, of course, had won the 5000 and 10,000m gold medals at the Stockholm Olympics in 1912, and the marathon gold medal at Antwerp in 1920. Arthur Newton had performed numerous long distance feats with perhaps the best known being his world 24 hour record of 154 miles set on a sixteen laps to the mile track at Madison Square Garden. Neither of these notables was the eventual winner, however. That honour went to a nineteen year old Cherokee farm boy from Oklahoma named Andy Payne. In 'Flanagan's Run' Charles C. Flanagan is the race organiser and the novel has us following the race with all its trials and tribulations across the United States. Some of the events which occur during the race are based on fact but most are the product of the author's imagination. The story has all the usual ingredients of the popular novel — drama, romance, violence and a conspiracy (involving none less than J. Edgar Hoover in this case). The author, Tom McNab, is himself a distinguished British athletics coach and also was technical advisor on 'Chariots of Fire'. The book is available in paperback published by Hodder and Stoughton, price $9*.95. SAFETY RUNNING by Steve Grose (from the September 1984 edition of the Queensland Marathon Club Newsletter) Last year the second Alan Woods* Memorial Race was held. Jt was won by Tony McCall with a commanding performance, although he was preceded across the line by a Sporting Wheelie. The proceeds of this run will now go to pay for the cost of bringing down another young Mackay runner in memory of the fine achievements of Alan Woods before his tragic death. For those who have not heard of Alan Woods, he was a promising young Mackay runner who lay for hours dying on the side of a Mackay road after being struck by a callous motorist who only stopped long enough to pull Alan’s mangled bike from beneath his vehicle. Another casualty in the constant and senseless war that motorists are waging upon the runner, and upon themselves. That such a young runner, with such a bright future, was killed, is all the more sad. Alan finished 12th in the University Marathon, with a time of 2 hr. 43 min., just a few months before his death. He was just 3 minutes away from winning the Under 20 Division. I believe that we can learn something from Alan’s death, that the Memorial race can be an annual reminder of the dangers that ekist in our sport. Perhaps the symbol of Alan’s violent death can help us to be more cautious whilst covering the road every day, so that the road can be covered in carbon rubber and not in our own blood. As has been so often said before, there is only one outcome when a large steel projectile moving at 100km/hr meets with the vulnerable structure of a human body. The car will always come out on top. I do not want anyone to go out and start running in fear. Nothing is worth the loss of the great enjoyment found in running. The chance of injury or casualty in running is very rare, particularly in comparison to other sports. But those who have been maimed, or killed, may never again feel the surge of unknown strength as they sprint for the line, or the immense beauty and wonder as the fog lifts from beneath your feet, creating a new day. The will to maintain this must surely be enough to motivate us all to take the precautions that will further our survival. I have run with many runners who seem to have a strong belief in their own invincibility, and who carelessly flaunt this before every vehicle. It seems they do not care about the destruction that can be caused by their actions, but I think it is more a lack of comprehension of the risk that they take, and possibly they do not realise how, by incorporating a few procedures in their running, they can easily make running much safer. So I will now try to outline some of these procedures so that any who are now unaware may no longer be ignorant. The major error that I find people committing is nonchalance in the face of traffic. Running in front of cars rather then waiting and going behind them; running with their back to traffic so that they can’t jump out of the way of a drunken driver; running with dark clothes and no reflectors at night. Most of these dangers can be eliminated by a little planning, particularly of the course you run over. Wherever possible always run against the traffic. Run courses which do not cross busy roads and that have wide shoulders. If possible, run with others in cas6 of accident. Most important of all, run defenoively. The way to handle an attacking dog is to pretend that you are a bigger, meaner dog. This is a bad attitude to have if you are about to tangle with a car, but if you run scared you will be asking to be hit. The best way to run is confidently, look the driver in the eye, even if you can’t see them. Let them know the consequences of scaring you. Trust no car. Even if they see you, neither of you really know what each other will do. It is always better to be safe than to risk a brush with death. Women face an added menace because of a minority of men who see that sexual violence is an acceptable outlet for their frustration. It could be said that these men have only been conditioned to believe this because of the fal se image that our society creates of the relationship between men and women. Rape is definitely not acceptable, but it seems to be all too accepted. Women can combat this by running with a friend, running only when there is light and following courses that are very popular and busy. SAFETY RUNNING (continued) The main thing to remember is to play it safe. Plan for safety; if necessary change your course to make it more safe. Always run with the understanding that you are vulnerable. By understanding the dangers you face, and planning to alleviate them, you will be able to run without fear or danger. *********************************** ****** ***** ***************** ************ ***** *** *** RUNNING IN NEW ZEALAND by Dot Browne I ran recently in the Winstone Marathon in Auckland, New Zealand, and was greatly impressed with the organisation of the race, and feel we could learn a great deal from marathon organisers over there. Firstly, there was the pre-race magazine, which, with the financial support of ad vertisers, gave a full history of the race, the entrants and their anticipated times, all in age-group categories, articles on the major contenders for this year’s race and articles on past winners and what they have achieved since they won. It was really great. I know Dave Cundy does it with the Nike but who else does ? In the actual race itself, the first mile was clearly marked and time-called, an important consideration which many organisers forget. They had chosen a good flat course, excellent road surface and the run involved four laps of a ring road round a large regional shopping area. The finish area was compeltely barricaded off from the spectators with solid, steelmesh moveable fances, roped together. The runners could get out of the area to see their friends, but spectators could not get in to clutter up the Finish Area. Ths exit gate was strictly policed. At the time I wondered why the presentations were held at 3 pm when the race started early at 6.30am. In retrospect it was a great idea. It gave tired runners a chance to go home, shower, eat and rest a while before coming back refreshed, hobbling maybe, but refreshed. The presentations were held in the foyer of the huge shopping complex and I was amazed by what the organisers had achieved in the intervening few hours. By 3.00pm, every finisher’s photgraph was displayed around the walls, in large clear colour and in finishing time order, and ready for purchasing. Full results lists were displayed. Wayne Munro, race director, had really made an effort to provide some incentives for slower runners. The stars got their recognition all right, with trips overseas and training grants, plus there were veteran awards for all the 5 year age groups for both men and women. The awards that appealed to me were for those who had broken the half- hour barriers for the first time - the 2.30, 3 hour, 3.30, 4 hour - about half a dozen in each case. They each received marathon T-shirts. These could be considered in Australian marathons, particularly in the smaller ones. Wayne had also invited submissions in the ’Survivor’s’ category, for people who reckoned they had trained with particular difficulties. The guy that won it was an oil rig worker who did all his training on a wooden platform constructed on a rig somplace way out in the middle of the Tasman. He did 14 laps to the kilometre and had to be careful he didn’t trip near the edge because the safety net wasn't too wide and if he went over that, it was a 200 foot drop to the water below. Somehow he managed to run a 2.45 marathon. Reckon he deserved the award. There were also awards for non-athletic club sports' stars, e.g. the fastest tennis player, basketballer, hockey player, karate expert, etc. The sport had to be stated on the entry form. Needless to aay, the presentations went on for ages, but the crowd loved it and gave each winner great applause. All in all, this is a great community marathon to run if you're in New Zealand in November 1985. ************************************************************************** ************* The 1985 NATIONAL PANASONIC HALF-MARATHON is to be held on March 24, 1985. from an article by Chris Brasher in the LONDON HOW THE WORLD'S OBSERVER, 28 October 1984 FASTEST MARATHON Steve Jones1 time of two WAS RUN hours eight minutes five seconds in the Americans Marathon in Chicago knocked eight seconds off Alberto Salazars world best set in New York in 1981. And he beat the Olympic champion by 61 seconds and the world champion by 64 seconds. Yet he still does not con sider himself a marathon runner ! 5ince it was his first 9 10 11 12 13 14115116 completed marathon (he pulled out of last year’s event with an ankle injury) His tactirs were simple: ♦he m&rathun runners tell me that the race does not begin until 20 miles so my plan was to stick with the leading group until 20 miles and then start racing.’ When he did start racing, the world’s best marathon runners could not keep with him. No wonder: he covered the last six miles at an average pace of four minutes 44.8 seconds per mile! He is now the hottest property in the hottest area of athletics - road racing. His ’participation money’ for winning was £29,100 plus £8.300 for a course record, plus £41,600 for his world record - a total of £79,000. It will all go into a trust fund under the control of the British Amateur AthMics Board and Steve will be allowed to draw from it for housing, transport, food and medical expenses. Steve did not run seriously until be joined the RAF and he performed better in cross country than in track running. His problem has been speed - his plan for 1985 was to drop down from 10,000m races to 5000m and ’to work on my basic speed. Now things may not be as simple as that - I’ve got to reassess my whole situation.’ So he has. The leg speed that was lacking to enable him to reach into Olympic Medal class on the track is more than enough over the 26.2 miles of the marathon. As he says himself:’Leg speed is what a lot of these marathon runners haven’t got.’ He has enough for this distance and he proved it in Chicago. How the World's Fastest Marathon was run (continued) But there is more to the marathon than leg speed. There is also an intensity of mind - the ability to concentrate without any lapse for over two hours. Steve lost that concentration for only a moment in Chicago and then 1 because I could see the finish. I so nearly let it slip,' he said. It may seem strange that such a slip might have cost the record in a race lasting over two hours, but world records are so finely honed these days that the slightest flaw will damage the cutting edge. Two miles from the finish Steve knew that the record could be his. He had destroyed the finest opposition in the world and he was heading for an historic breakthrough (perhaps even the first sub 2:00 marathon). The crew in the lead car shouted at him fKeep this tempo and the world record is yours,' He gave a little nod but by now the pace was making his whole body suffer. He thought to himself of all those five minute bursts he had done in training and said 'just put another one in.' And he did. ****************************************************************************************** BOOK REVIEW : 'WINNING WOMEN' by Susan Mitchell and Ken Dyer. Penguin Book; from Wendy Ey The authors have developed this book on women in sport by first of all taking the various components of sport: Speed, Strength, Skill, Stamina, Competing against Men, Management and Coaching, Reporting, and then selecting one or two sportswomen in each category for interview. Although those selected cover a large number of sports ranging from athletics and swimming to rifle shooting and horse riding, there is a dominance of athletes: Raelene Boyle (speed), Glynis Nunn and Donna Gould (stamina), Petra Rivers and Bev Francis (strength), Marlene Matthews and Wendy Ey (Management and Coaching). The one athlete of most interest to members of the VMC is of course one of Australia's most promising distance runners in Donna Gould. You read of her development as a runner with an unorthodox training method that combines cycling with running, of her total commitment to training, the special relationship she has with her father/coach and the extraordinary maturity in one so young. The style of writing used by Susan Mitchell is an easy flowing narrative that reads as though the athlete is actually talking to you. It is the sort of book that once you begin you can't put down. For the real sports lover, the opportunity to hear what Dawn Fraser, Evonne Cawley and Heather McKay have to say in addition to the athites, makes for compulsive reading. For anyone interested in sport, this book is a MUST. For women in sport, it should be compulsory reading. For families and those closely connected to the sportswomen it is educational. I CAN RECOMMEND IT!

***************************************************************************************** THE SINGAPORE MARATHON - December 9, 1904 by Dot Browne The Singapore Marathon is the one with the million dollar budget and an international field to rival the Olympics - 00 invited athletes from 25 different countries as well as the 12,000 local runners. 23-year-old Chris Lynch (best time^ 2:10) and myself were invited. Training was like running in a sauna, with daily 29 temperatures and 3U% humidity. Perhaps the pick of the bunch of invited runners was Brent Jones (21) from G.B. He'd run 2:17 and when I asked him what he did for a crust, he said he was a scarecrow and he wasn't joking. He apparently gets in a bit of extra training by flapping around the grain crops in baggy gear for a farmer in Dorset and frightens all the crows. Overall the race was a nightmare; on average runners had added 10-15 minutes to their usual times. RESULTS: MEN WOMEN 1 . Tommy PERSS0N (Swe) 2.18.30 1 . Kersti JACOBSON (Den) 2.41.34 2. ODDS AMD ENDS AMD RANDOM THOUGHTS <, Fred Lester 0 THE 'EMU GAMES* (not'Mickey Mouse'in Australia) were just another example of a waste of public effort and money to satisfy some egos and line the pockets of people who are sweating on our sportsmen and women. All that Media 'Hype' and consequent cheapening of medals is bordering on an insult to the Australian sporting public not to speak of the sportsmen and women themselves* Mot only, but particularly,in athletics any worthwhile competition was produced by our own homegrown products, which is not to be wondered at when our overseas visitors are expected to deliver the goods out of season o Over the years there has been sad repetition after sad repetition of the same thing. It is not fair to expect more from overseas athletes who simply cannot give of their best, would it not be far better to time such visits with a period when they are working up into form and our own athletes are moving towards gearing up for overseas competitions of major international importance ? Besides, the period from the end of Ibrch virtually through to the end of May is climatically the most favourable period for most outdoor sports in Australia. THE WORLD CROSSCOUNTRY TEAM TRIALS, just prior to the 'EMU GAMES', deserved far more attention than was given to them. The 500 or so people who were prepared to go out to Bundoora very early on a Sunday morning certainly experienced a feast of competition, even if there was a badly organised start to the women's event. While 16 year old Kerith DUNCANSGN ran away from the others, the next 6 finishers were within 20 seconds. Likewise, in the Junior Men's race, only 30 seconds separated 1st from 6th. The Senior Men were dominated by Bobert deCASTELLA as expected, but the next 19 runners crossed the finishing line within 2 minutes on the testing 12km course under a hot sun. With racing as dose as this, our teams should be right up there with the world's best in Portugal. ACQUIRING FITNESS, like any other learning process, is basically a matter of consistent application and there are no short-cuts or magic tricks, foods, drinks or pills. Neither can we achieve fitness by wearing certain sporting gear or reading inspiring magazines, no matter how good the advertising. In short, don't be sucked in by all the soft and hard sells, we are being sold 'pups' all along the way. Running long distances, that is 10km and beyond, is a healthy aerobic exercise provided the runner is aware of his or her limits in physical capacity of the moment and judges the amount of effort (speed & distance) for even output. Once a run commences there is nothing anyone can do to add to the reserves of strength or stamina while the body works at an optimum level of energy output, one needs to drop below that level for a period for replenishment to have any effect. W H N H G WOMEN (see book review inside) is a timely book to read for any sports person, male or female, to help in their understanding of the problems and obstacles that have to be overcome by more than 50$ of the PEOPLE AROUND US to have their full participation in sport just recognised. Not only this but there is the constantly emphasised odious comparison in always trying to measure Women against Men as instanced in terms of percentage or catch-up in level of perfomance and achievement o Instead it would be far better to give support unhampered by conditioned thinking so that the participants can work it out in their own way. This support can start off by sharing more effectively all the daily tasks, whether at home or at work and especially the boring chores that cannot be avoided. A SIGN OF BETTER THINGS TO COME maybe read into a Board Member of the VAA winning the 5000H/I0,000m Victorian Championship double, when the new Treasurer, EWEN WILSON led the way in both events. Can any of our historians come up with previous title winners among VAA executive officers ? If a rejuvenation in participation and thinking can be continued further down the line into the Council and Venue Committees there is a distinct possibility that the archaic Interclub system may receive a much needed overhaul and that there may also be an overdue standardisation of distances for Road and Crosscountry events. Who knows, this could even lead to renewed enthusiasm and a rise in the numbers of athletes &

m\/ur f V FOUNDED 1946 AS 'VICTORIAN MARATHON CLUB' ^ j Y/ y L' i - X . TO PROMOTE AND FOSTER LONG DISTANCE RUNNING. Y&OAD R U M H t « S \ Melbourne Affiliated to the Victorian Athletic Association,

The VMC ROAD RUNNERS is a unique organisation within the world of athletics. It is a club which caters for the newcomer to running, the experienced regular athlete, the young and the old, men and women, boys and girls. It represents a bridge, as it were, between the highly organised and the more casual approaches in competition, leaving it to the participating individual how much or how little pressure he/she wishes to apply. The accent within the club is on enjoyment of running through whatever participants see as their own particular pleasure- and in this way achieve individually or jointly what they set out to do to their fullest personal satisfaction. We do not place expectations on anyone beyond asking runners to take a turn at performing some of the miminum chores required to conduct our events smoothly and for their own satisfaction. This mainly involves ensuring that runners do not lose their way, that everyone can find out what time they did and how they compare with either each other or their own previous performance. The VMC ROAD RUNNERS try to co-operate closely with other distance running organisations as well as the Victorian Athletic Association, whether local or national. The club maintains a programme throughout the year with the aim of enabling runners to test and improve their fitness at varying distances and, where possible, cater for different stages of fitness by offering a choice between a long or a short race on each date. Anyone can join up at any of our events; if they wish to just have a run without becoming members, they may do so at a $1 surcharge in the main race, except for special events such as the VMC MARATHON, the VMC 50 MILER, the EMIL ZATOPEK 10,000m SERIES, and some other nominated events. These special events, because of their importance and the higher degree of organisation, require early pre-race entries (usually 3 weeks ahead or as advertised in the VMC NEWSLETTER) and, in the case of the EMIL ZATOPEK series, membership and time qualifications to remain manageable. Basically, the VMC ROAD RUNNERS aim to keep organisational and -technical details to the barest minimum essential to conducting their events satisfactorily for all. We like to stick to our slogan of fWith A Minimum Of Fuss1! Membership fees are $8 per year (adult), $4 per year (under 20), and cover the calendar year.
