Colonisation and the Involution of the Maori Economy Hazel Petrie University of Auckland Auckland, New Zealand [email protected] A paper for Session 24 XIII World Congress of Economic History Buenos Aires July 2002 In 2001, international research by the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor, found Maori to be the most entrepreneurial people in the world, noting also that Maori ‘played an important role in the history and evolution of New Zealand entrepreneurship’.1 These findings beg a consideration of why the Maori economy, which was expanding vigorously in terms of value and in terms of international markets immediately prior to New Zealand’s annexation by Britain in 1840, involuted soon after colonisation. Before offering examples of Maori commercial practice in the period between initial European contact and colonisation, this paper will summarise some essential features of Maori society that underlay those practices. It will then consider how three broad aspects of the subsequent colonising process impacted on these practices during its first twenty five years. These aspects are: Christian beliefs and values, the ideologies of the newly emerging ‘science’ of Political Economy; and the racial attitudes and political demands of an increasingly powerful settler government. It is acknowledged that the nature of Maori commerce varied according to regional resources, the timing and degree of exposure to foreigners, local politics, individual personalities, and many other factors. There was no one Maori practice or experience, but the examples offered, which arose in a study of Maori flourmill and trading ship ownership, are intended to show how these facets of colonisation interwove to encourage a narrowing and contraction of Maori commercial endeavours. -

In the early days of the colony, trans-Tasman travel was fluid between Sydney and New Zealand for Maori and non-Indigenous people alike. An eighteenth-century map by Daniel Djurberg shows an alternative name for New Holland as 'Ulimaroa'. This was widely believed to be a Maori word for Australia; however there is no L in the Maori alphabet. This may mean it was a Polynesian word, perhaps Hawaiian or Samoan, however it does not explain how the name came into Djurberg's possession. From 1788 to 1840 the colony of New South Wales included New Zealand. The head of state was the monarch, represented by the governor of New South Wales. British sovereignty over New Zealand was not established until 1840, when the Treaty of Waitangi recognised that New Zealand had been an independent territory until then. The Declaration of Independence signed in 1835 by a number of Maori chiefs and formally recognised by the British government indicated that British sovereignty did not extend to New Zealand. This meant the British in Sydney had no option than to deal with Maori, who were still in control of their own land. The history of Maori in Sydney and the critical role they played in the success of the town has been minimised by historians. -

Memorandum of Understanding Between The
Memorandum Of Understanding As at Sunday 25th May 2014 Between the MANA Movement and the Internet Party The Parties Agree: A: Registration 1. To register a new political party (referred to herein as the ‘New Party’) and for the Internet Party and MANA Movement (herein referred to as the ‘component parties’) to provide 275 names and written authorities (if required) of existing or new members to become founding members of the New Party. 2. To develop a constitution, candidate selection rules and logo for the New Party that reflects the principles of the relationship and this agreement. 3. To submit a complete application for registration of the New Party in early June 2014. 4. To inform the Electoral Commission that the component parties will be component parties of the New Party. B: Name and Logo 5. The full name of the New Party will be ‘Internet Party and MANA Movement’ and short name ‘Internet MANA’. 6. That both parties will work collaboratively to develop a logo for the New Party which will be a composite formed by the Internet Party’s logo and a new logo for MANA. If the Electoral Commission does not approve this logo, both parties will work together to develop an acceptable one using the principle of equal partnership. C: Leadership, Spokespeople and Party Roles 7. To establish a joint New Party Council to make decisions on behalf of the New Party with four representatives from each component party, including: a). Hone Harawira MP as the founding Leader of the New Party. b). The leader of the Internet Party as Chairperson of the New Party Council. -

E-whanaungatanga: The role of social media in Māori political engagement A thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Philosophy in Development Studies at Te Kunenga ki Pūrehuroa: Massey University, Palmerston North, New Zealand. Joanne Helen Waitoa 2013 Abstract Social media are used increasingly worldwide to connect people and points of view. This thesis explores the role social media can play in enhancing Māori development via political engagement. It investigates the efficacy of using social media to increase Māori political awareness and participation using the Mana Party Facebook pages as a case study. It also examines the opportunities and implications of social media for indigenous development in general. Themes in the literature on social media and indigenous development include: identity politics; language revitalisation and cultural preservation; activism; knowledge management; networking and collaboration; and business and marketing. This qualitative study was informed by Kaupapa Māori and empowerment theories. It involves interviews with the Mana Party president, Mana Party Facebook page moderators, and users of the Mana Party Facebook pages. The interviews explored the objectives and outcomes of using social media to raise political awareness of Māori, finding that Mana Party objectives were met to varying degrees. It also found that social media has both positive and negative implications for indigenous development. -

Site Overview Ohakiri Pa or St Paul’s Rock, as it is better known as today, is located within the St Paul’s Rock Scenic Reserve which is under the care of the Department of Conservation. The Reserve consists of two blocks, the northern and southern, on a peninsula that projects out into the Whangaroa Harbour on Northland’s east coast (fig 1). The rock is part of the Maori legend that tells of the formation of the harbour and today it is a significant landmark within the district and commands the inner harbour. Ohakiri is regionally significant as one of the only accessible tangible remains of Whangaroa’s early Maori and European history. -
