The keystone on the eastern side of the Archway shows that the quarry was working in 1897 on both sides of the Newlyn-Paul coffin path that had been diverted over the Archway. 3487 Photo of Penlee quarry. Ground preparation involved the use of horizontal blast holes, with the rock loaded into railway tubs for crushing. Early quarrying was very dangerous work with frequent injuries and fatalities. 3488 Penlee Quarry, 1917. The quarry is in its infancy and the stone went by rail to the sea. The track besides the quarry was the only existing way to Paul Church and funerals were walked to Paul. During the 1914 -1918 war, material from the quarry was used to form the platform for the Newlyn/Land's End Royal Naval Air Service Station. Notice the sea plane taking off. Also filed as 1298 under 17 War. 3489 Photo of Penlee quarry, 1917. The Archway is visible, but the quarry plant is more extensive than that in 1908 - 1910, see Figs 1 and 5. 3490 Ordnance survey map 1878 showing Penlee Quarry before the start of quarrying. On the 1878 plan, note the old mine shaft - West Tolvaddon copper mine. Only 40t of 5% copper ore was ever reported in its history (for the years 1862 - 1863); workings lay on the seaward side of Cliff Road. 3491 Ordnance survey map 1908 showing Penlee Quarry after the start of quarrying. 3492 Ordnance survey map 1936 showing Penlee Quarry 3493 Ordnance survey map 1962 showing Penlee Quarry. After the 1939 - 1945 war the quarry was developed with multiple benches and progressed below sea level to about 30m below Ordnance Datum. 3494 Quarry workings in the late 1960s.
