  • JOE LAWSON Class of 1969
JOE LAWSON Class of 1969 Joe Lawson was proudly born and raised in Seneca Falls, the oldest of 6 children born to Joseph Sr. and Helen Ferguson Lawson. As a child he grew up playing outside activities with the other neighborhood children. Most of these neighborhood gatherings revolved around sports. As they got older, they eventually branched out to other neighborhoods to create competition. Sometimes they competed with others through school, in Joe’s case, St. Patrick's. Neighborhood sports taught him competition. Since he was taller than his age group, Joe played with older kids encountering many bumps in the road. Soon thereafter came little league, school basketball, and later organized football. Throughout this period, Joe always continued to get together with his friends for no holds barred competition in all sports. That competitive application continued to grow and as an 8th grader Joe’s St. Patrick's basketball team had an undefeated season and won the league. Looking forward, some on that team have gone on to distinction in this hall of fame including Mark Piscitelli and Mike Nozzolio. Tony Ferrara was also a member of that team. Throughout, Joe’s favorite sport was football, which he continues to enjoy. An injury while playing JV as a sophomore caused his father to shut this sport down. Those were the days when kids actually listened to their parents! In high school, Joe amassed 6 varsity letters in basketball and baseball, being a starting pitcher in baseball as a freshman. An injury caused him to miss part of the sophomore basketball season, and the entire baseball season.

A GEOGRAPHIC ANALYSIS OF PROFESSIONAL BASEBALL'S FIRST-YEAR PLAYER SIGNINGS, 1965-1977 By MARK WILSON ,,RUPERT Bachelor of Arts Ohio State University Columbus, Ohio 1974 Submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate College of the Oklahoma State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE May, 1980 \~~'S~S \C\ io ~C\1451 Q.ic~· 1- A GEOGRAPHIC ANALYSIS OF PROFESSIONAL BASEBALL 1 S FIRST-YEAR PLAYER SIGNINGS, 1965- 1977 Thesis Approved: Thesis Advi & Dean of the Graduate College 1057~29 ii PREFACE This project was initiated in December, 1977 when Dr. John F. Rooney handed me a carton of papers dealing with contemporary profes sional baseball player signings. My original plan was to analyze only a portion of the data for a paper to be presented the following April at the annual meeting of the Association of American Geographers. I became so engrossed with the subject that I soon decided to thoroughly examine the entire data set for a masters thesis. A two-month tour of many of the major league ballparks during the summer of 1978 further aroused my curiosity for the subject. The intertwining of baseball and geography has since become a personal labor of love. It is hoped that others might find this thesis interesting and informative. I must thank Dr. Rooney for making the data available and for his invaluable expertise as my major adviser. Thanks are also extended to Dr. Stephen W. Tweedie and Dr. George 0. Carney for their interest and timely advice. I am indebted to Gayle Maxwell and her cartography staff for their professional work on the maps included in this thesis.

FOUR DECADES OF SEATTLE MARINERS BASEBALL Each month during the 2017 season, Mariners Magazine will highlight a different era to celebrate the club’s 40th Anniversary. In this issue, we’ll take a look at the 1977 through 1983 seasons. (Part 1 of 6) By Mike Gastineau The first game in Seattle Mariners history was played on April 6, 1977, in front of a sellout crowd of 57,762. In an historic twist Diego Segui was the Opening Day starting pitcher for the Mariners. Eight years earlier, on October 1, 1969, Segui pitched the 9th inning of what would be the final game in the Seattle Pilots history. He gave up a run that tied the game but got the win when the Pilots scored in their half of the inning. His luck was not as good in 1977 as the Angels chased him in the 4th inning of a 7-0 loss. • Milwaukee Brewers Look Behind the Scenes at How Scissor Lifts, Boom Lifts & Personnel Carriers
Servicing Fans, the Brewers Way The Milwaukee Brewers were founded in 1970 when Bud Selig purchased the Seattle Pilots and moved them to Milwaukee. Since that time, the Brewers staff works hard behind the scenes of Miller Park to keep thousands of fans happy, entertained and loyal. It takes a strong local material handling partner like that of Wisconsin Lift Truck to keep Miller Park moving. Lead Off 1 There’s an exceptional amount of detail built into bringing Brewers baseball games to life. For instance, did you know that TV cameras are needed at particular heights and angles for the viewers to watch the game? The best way to provide this flexibility is with JLG 2630ES & 2646ES scissor lifts. Wisconsin Lift Truck customizes these lifts with lower rails so TV cameras can move freely while securely fastened to the lift, providing viewers the best angles on all the action. Contact Hitter 2 What about getting around the park? Those who work at the ballpark need to get the job done fast, especially on game day. Walking from one end of the park to the other takes time. Or how about all those carts shuttling people around the parking lot, to and from the stadium. Wisconsin Lift Truck supplies EZ-GO & Cushman personnel carriers to help staff and guests get to their destination quickly and safely, so everyone can enjoy the game. 3 Three-Hole So far, you may not have noticed our vehicles around the ballpark… or so you think. A Wisconsin Lift Truck supplied personnel carrier has been converted into the Brat Patrol vehicle! This vehicle was modified, allowing for the racing sausages to fit in the front seats.

  • The Keokuk Cardinals 1958 – 1961, Midwest League a Class D Farm Club of the St
The Keokuk Cardinals 1958 – 1961, Midwest League A Class D Farm Club of the St. Louis Cardinals By Steve Smith Keokuk baseball has a long and illustrious history. At its peak in 1960, the small city— located on the bluffs of the Mississippi River in the southeast corner of Iowa—had a population of 16,300. Keokuk’s professional baseball history began in 1875 when the Keokuk Westerns became the State of Iowa’s only major league team. For over three quarters of a century until the Dodgers and Giants moved west in 1957, the City of Keokuk shared with St. Louis the distinction of being one of only two cities west of the Mississippi River to have a major league team. In 1875, the Keokuk Westerns became a member of the then-major league National Association. Keokuk competed with the likes of Boston, Hartford, St. Louis, Philadelphia, Chicago, Washington, and New Haven. However, the company proved too fast as Keokuk compiled a 1-12 record before it withdrew from the league on June 16, 1875. Over the next 75 years, Keokuk was a member of the Western Association (1885), the Iowa State League (1904-1906), the Central Association (1907-1915), Mississippi Valley League (1929-1933), Western League (1935), the reorganized Central Association (1947- 1949) and Three-I League (1952-57) prior to entering the Midwest League in 1958 as a farm club of the St. Louis Cardinals. Future major leaguers who passed through Keokuk on their way to the major leagues included Charlie Hollocher, Ken O’Dea, Joe Becker, Gus Bell, Roger Maris (32 HRs and 111 RBIs with the 1954 Keokuk Kernels) and Stan Pitula.
