Marine scientist Marcus Eriksen invited onboard an unusual crew to help him study the sea: renowned surfers Keith & Dan Malloy, musician Jack Johnson, spearfisher woman Kimi Werner, and bodysurfer Mark Cunningham become citizen scientists on a mission to assess the fate of plastics in the world’s oceans. After years of hearing about the famous “garbage patches” in the ocean’s gyres, the crew is stunned to learn that the patches are a myth: the waters stretch- ing to the horizon are clear blue, with no islands of trash in sight. But as the crew sieves the water and sorts through their haul, a more disturbing reality sets in: a fog of microplastics permeates the world’s oceans, trillions of nearly invisible plas- tic shards making their way up the marine food chain. -

Johnson, singer Paula Fuga, ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro and actress Alfre Woodard helped “adopt” the schools as part of the Turnaround Arts program, a White House initiative led by the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities. The program, now in its second year in Hawaii, also includes Waianae and Kalihi Kai elementary schools. Johnson, whom the students aectionately call Uncle Jack, performed some of his own songs at a schoolwide assembly Monday morning before working with a few individual classes at Kamaile. -
Steve Adams, Bass/Vocals
Steve Adams, bass/vocals Buying his first electric bass guitar at age 13 and playing in bands throughout high school led bass player Steve Adams to the Music Department at UC Santa Barbara in 1993. While working toward his degree in Ethnomusicology, he further explored the upright acoustic bass, focusing on American (Jazz, Bluegrass) and Middle Eastern (Arabic, Persian, Turkish) music. Today, Steve's broad range of experiences along with his great groove and warm tone make him an in-demand bass player both in the studio and on stage. When off the road with his jam/pop band ALO, you’re likely to catch Steve playing out with an assortment of great musicians including Nicki Bluhm & The Gramblers, Big Light, Brokedown in Bakersfield, Newfangled Wasteland and many more! photo by Jay Balkesberg I. Concert Review: Jack Johnson By: David Burger
Concert review: Jack Johnson by: David Burger Trib staffer Chris McDonald attended Jack Johnson's Froday night show at Usana Amphitheatre, and here is his review: Laid back, chill, mellow. Did I miss any? All of these and more have been used to describe Jack Johnson and his music. As much as I wanted to avoid using these cliches, they fit. Johnson's show at a packed Usana Amphitheatre was like going to a party with friends and family, a really large party. With the exception of a large screen behind the band, the stage was simple and provided as intimate an atmosphere as Usana allows. Johnson's shows are devoid of pyrotechnics or elaborate props and are all the better for it. The show opened with "You and Your Heart" from his new album "To the Sea" and for nearly two hours Johnson had the audience in the palm of his hands. There were a few twists on old favorites including a verse from "Just What I Needed" by The Cars that found its way into Johnson's "Sitting Waiting Wishing". Hawaiian singer Paula Fuga joined Johnson on stage for "Turn Your Love", the pair also performed Fuga's song "Country Road." Dan Lebowitz, guitarist for opening act ALO, and G Love, who performed an energetic solo set, contributed to a rousing rendition of "Staple It Together" including a freestyle rap from bassist Merlo Podlewski. Johnson's keyboardist Zach Gill, who is also a member of ALO, lent his accordion skills to the songs "Banana Pancakes" and provided a playful stage presence throughout. -

If that's the case, then life must be pretty good for the singer‑songwriter. The songs on last year's From Here to Now to You have a real tenderness to them as Johnson sings about his love for his wife and kids. But we all know that happy songs aren't always the best songs and that's not lost on Johnson, a guy whose soft voice and delicate melodies make many of his songs sound like lullabies (and the whimsical tunes he wrote for the soundtrack for the 2006 film Curious George certainly fit that bill). "If it means sounding like you're getting older, so be it," says Johnson of the contentment he expresses on From Here to Now to You. "This record is about watching the world through my children's eyes. Many of the songs are just simple love songs. They're a good way for me to remind my wife how much I love her. I'm not great about getting a present. -

Special Jack Johnson 10Th Anniversary Reissue with Extras
Special Jack Johnson 10th Anniversary Reissue With Extras 02/18/2011 we had a blurb about this recently in the Day in Pop Digest from FMQB. Turned out some of the info was off, but we now have all of the details for you with the official announcement: Celebrating their 10-year anniversary, independent record label owners, Andy Factor and JP Plunier re-release their first album, Jack Johnson's Brushfire Fairytales, with the help of Bernie Grundman. Pulling the original 1/2" analog masters from the "vault" and re-mastering with the famed engineer, Everloving improved the fidelity of the album and will reintroduce it to old and new fans alike. The vinyl edition, cut directly from tape to lacquer (AAA to all you audiophiles) is available now at local independent record shops and includes a digital download card with purchase. Two live bonus tracks of "Flake" and "Inaudible Melodies" are offered only on the digital download version of this release. As an unknown artist in 2001, Jack Johnson and the upstart indie label formerly known as Enjoy Records produced their first album together, Brushfire Fairytales. Plunier states, "Working on the album with Jack was an effort to create a sound that was not commonly heard on the radio and we wanted to bring audiophiles the opportunity to listen to what the surf culture had already been a part of. It was an honor to put Everloving's grass roots efforts into creating a successful and meaningful sound." A year after its release date and over 100,000 units sold, Brushfire Fairytales' impressive debut finally attracted major record labels with offers to sign Johnson.
