Students at Kamaile Academy in Waianae got brief hands-on lessons in songwriting and music Monday from local musician Jack Johnson. http://www.staradvertiser.com/2016/10/25/hawaii-news/star-musician-helps-students-shine/ 1/3 10/27/2016 Jack Johnson helps students shine | Honolulu Star-Advertiser The Hawaiian-focused charter school is one of three Oahu public schools participating in a national program that uses arts education to help turn around low-performing schools. Johnson, singer Paula Fuga, ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro and actress Alfre Woodard helped “adopt” the schools as part of the Turnaround Arts program, a White House initiative led by the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities. The program, now in its second year in Hawaii, also includes Waianae and Kalihi Kai elementary schools. Johnson, whom the students aectionately call Uncle Jack, performed some of his own songs at a schoolwide assembly Monday morning before working with a few individual classes at Kamaile. “Songwriting, I think, is a lot of fun for the kids,” said Johnson, a Kahuku High &Intermediate graduate. “I like to just show them that I’m just like them, basically. I started writing songs just about going to school in the morning, riding the bus and stu like that. … I just try to show them you can write a song about anything.” Strumming a guitar, Johnson helped groups of fourth- and sixth-grade students choose a music style and melody before collaborating on lyrics for songs. The older students, for example, chose a reggae beat and composed a song about playing sports and having supportive friends — all in under 10 minutes. “See how easy that was? That was, like, seven minutes and we wrote a song,” Johnson told the class. “If you guys gave yourselves 15 minutes, imagine the song you could write. Or take an hour.” In addition to celebrity artists, the Turnaround Arts program helps schools hire art and music teachers, purchase art supplies and musical instruments, and train educators to integrate art with core subjects such as reading, math and science. Schools are selected by the U.S. Department of Education to receive extra resources because they are in the bottom 5 percent of schools in their state for academic achievement. Anna Winslow, Kamaile Academy’s principal, credits the program with helping teachers and students to better focus. “When I see the joy in the kids’ faces, it’s like they’re ready, they’re energized to get into the classroom,” Winslow said. “It’s focused energy.” She added that she believes the arts integration strategies are partially behind a big drop in the number of so-called behavioral referrals, when misbehaving students are referred to school administrators. That tally has dropped to 45 referrals from more than 100 the year before. http://www.staradvertiser.com/2016/10/25/hawaii-news/star-musician-helps-students-shine/ 2/3 10/27/2016 Jack Johnson helps students shine | Honolulu Star-Advertiser Winslow said the school hopes the arts program will help improve teacher and student retention rates. The K-12 school, with nearly 900 students enrolled this fall, has high rates of transient students, and more than 90 percent of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunches, a key indicator of poverty. Some Kamaile students say the Turnaround Arts program has helped them be more expressive. “I see students more often expressing themselves — not really in a conventional way, because before it was all about textbooks, but now I see people being more artistic in the way they express themselves in classes,” said sophomore Mark Allen Boter. Other students say they hope the arts program will help boost school spirit and pride, and increase participation in the school’s annual talent show. Turnaround Arts is funded through a public-private partnership with the U.S. Department of Education and foundations. Locally, the state Department of Education and the Hawaii Arts Alliance are program partners. http://www.staradvertiser.com/2016/10/25/hawaii-news/star-musician-helps-students-shine/ 3/3.

Marine scientist Marcus Eriksen invited onboard an unusual crew to help him study the sea: renowned surfers Keith & Dan Malloy, musician Jack Johnson, spearfisher woman Kimi Werner, and bodysurfer Mark Cunningham become citizen scientists on a mission to assess the fate of plastics in the world’s oceans. After years of hearing about the famous “garbage patches” in the ocean’s gyres, the crew is stunned to learn that the patches are a myth: the waters stretch- ing to the horizon are clear blue, with no islands of trash in sight. But as the crew sieves the water and sorts through their haul, a more disturbing reality sets in: a fog of microplastics permeates the world’s oceans, trillions of nearly invisible plas- tic shards making their way up the marine food chain.

  • Concert Review: Jack Johnson By: David Burger
Concert review: Jack Johnson by: David Burger Trib staffer Chris McDonald attended Jack Johnson's Froday night show at Usana Amphitheatre, and here is his review: Laid back, chill, mellow. Did I miss any? All of these and more have been used to describe Jack Johnson and his music. As much as I wanted to avoid using these cliches, they fit. Johnson's show at a packed Usana Amphitheatre was like going to a party with friends and family, a really large party. With the exception of a large screen behind the band, the stage was simple and provided as intimate an atmosphere as Usana allows. Johnson's shows are devoid of pyrotechnics or elaborate props and are all the better for it. The show opened with "You and Your Heart" from his new album "To the Sea" and for nearly two hours Johnson had the audience in the palm of his hands. There were a few twists on old favorites including a verse from "Just What I Needed" by The Cars that found its way into Johnson's "Sitting Waiting Wishing". Hawaiian singer Paula Fuga joined Johnson on stage for "Turn Your Love", the pair also performed Fuga's song "Country Road." Dan Lebowitz, guitarist for opening act ALO, and G Love, who performed an energetic solo set, contributed to a rousing rendition of "Staple It Together" including a freestyle rap from bassist Merlo Podlewski. Johnson's keyboardist Zach Gill, who is also a member of ALO, lent his accordion skills to the songs "Banana Pancakes" and provided a playful stage presence throughout.

If that's the case, then life must be pretty good for the singer‑songwriter. The songs on last year's From Here to Now to You have a real tenderness to them as Johnson sings about his love for his wife and kids. But we all know that happy songs aren't always the best songs and that's not lost on Johnson, a guy whose soft voice and delicate melodies make many of his songs sound like lullabies (and the whimsical tunes he wrote for the soundtrack for the 2006 film Curious George certainly fit that bill). "If it means sounding like you're getting older, so be it," says Johnson of the contentment he expresses on From Here to Now to You. "This record is about watching the world through my children's eyes. Many of the songs are just simple love songs. They're a good way for me to remind my wife how much I love her. I'm not great about getting a present.

  • Special Jack Johnson 10Th Anniversary Reissue with Extras
Special Jack Johnson 10th Anniversary Reissue With Extras 02/18/2011 we had a blurb about this recently in the Day in Pop Digest from FMQB. Turned out some of the info was off, but we now have all of the details for you with the official announcement: Celebrating their 10-year anniversary, independent record label owners, Andy Factor and JP Plunier re-release their first album, Jack Johnson's Brushfire Fairytales, with the help of Bernie Grundman. Pulling the original 1/2" analog masters from the "vault" and re-mastering with the famed engineer, Everloving improved the fidelity of the album and will reintroduce it to old and new fans alike. The vinyl edition, cut directly from tape to lacquer (AAA to all you audiophiles) is available now at local independent record shops and includes a digital download card with purchase. Two live bonus tracks of "Flake" and "Inaudible Melodies" are offered only on the digital download version of this release. As an unknown artist in 2001, Jack Johnson and the upstart indie label formerly known as Enjoy Records produced their first album together, Brushfire Fairytales. Plunier states, "Working on the album with Jack was an effort to create a sound that was not commonly heard on the radio and we wanted to bring audiophiles the opportunity to listen to what the surf culture had already been a part of. It was an honor to put Everloving's grass roots efforts into creating a successful and meaningful sound." A year after its release date and over 100,000 units sold, Brushfire Fairytales' impressive debut finally attracted major record labels with offers to sign Johnson.
