In just six years, Torbett has transferred a once dormant ECU program into a contender in the American Athletic Conference. The Purple and Gold experienced another strong start under Torbett’s tutelage in 2018, winning seven of 10 matches prior to the start of AAC play. ECU ran its overall record all the way to 12-4 and began the league season 4-1 - the best start to a conference schedule in program history - before injuries finally caught up with the Pirates and hampered the remainder of the campaign. East Carolina enjoyed one of its finest seasons in school history in 2017, racking up a 22-11 overall record and 13-7 AAC mark – good for fourth place in the league standings. ECU was picked to finish 11th in the preseason coaches poll. The 22 victories were the most for the Pirates since 1982 and the 20-win season was the first for the program since 2005. Setter Shelby Martin was tabbed the AAC Freshman of the Year and to the Second Team, marking the first ECU player to earn such an honor in program history. Senior middle blocker Natalie Montini also collected the first all-conference first-team laurel for the Pirates since 2007 while classmate and outside hitter Ashton Mares became the fifth player in school history to record over 1,000 career kills and digs. Torbett enjoyed some personal accolades as well in 2017, becoming the all-time winningest head volleyball coach at ECU when the Pirates defeated AAC opponent USF 3-1 on Nov. 3 in Greenville. She also earned her 400th career win with a 3-0 sweep of N.C. Central Sept. 19 at home. Torbett currently owns the second-most career victories of any active head coach in the American Conference. The 2016 season saw the program take a large and important step in the turnaround process as ECU posted a 15-15 record - its first non-losing season OACH ORBEtt AT A LANCE since 2006.

(theACC.com) — The Atlantic Coast Conference has announced pre-seeds and brackets for the 2021 ACC Wrestling Championship, which will be held this Sunday (Feb. 28) at NC State’s Reynolds Coliseum. The host and two-time defending champions Wolfpack leads with four wrestlers seeded No. 1 in their respective weight class brackets. Pitt follows with three No. 1 seeds, while regular-season dual champion Virginia Tech earned two and North Carolina one. Seeds were determined by a vote of the league’s six head coaches. Each weight class champion and runner-up at the 2021 ACC Championship will earn All-ACC recognition. In addition to ACC honors, student-athletes will be vying for berths and seeding in the 2021 NCAA Wrestling Championships, which will be held March 18-20 at Enterprise Center in St. Louis. The ACC has been awarded 33 automatic berths and is hopeful of earning several more at-large selections. The ACC placed five teams among the top 20 of last week’s NWCA national rankings, including Virginia Tech at No. 3 and NC State at No. 7. Thirty-two Atlantic Coast Conference student-athletes are listed among the top 20 of their individual weight classes in the most recent InterMat national rankings, including 17 among the top 10 and seven among the top five.
