Auburn Gymnastics History Auburn gymnastics dates back to the late 1890s, but it was not until the late 1960s that the sport began to make it s mark at the University. It was not until the 1990s that it was brought into the national spotlight. In the 1990s, the T igers went to the NCAA Championships twice under retired head coach Robert Dillard. Dillard also led the T igers to the first-ever national championship of any kind for a women’ s sport at Auburn, as the T igers won the NIT title in 1993 and 1995. The Tigers formally began competing in intercollegiate gymnastics in 1965 under Ed Bengston. It took only four years for both the men’ s and women’s teams to capture both st ate and region - al championships. The Auburn men’s team won the first of three consecutive Southeastern AAU Championships in 1966. The women’s team took just a lit - McWhorter Center tle longer , but the wait was worth it. In 1969, the women as well as the men claimed the Alabama Collegiate Championships, just one year before the program was discontinued. Bengston restored the program in 1974 after the four-year layof f. T itle IX resulted in the first financial aid for an Auburn gymnast when Jeanne Denoon-Amos received $150. Before Dillard took control of the program in 1986, Tabor Medill had the helm of the T igers. Medill was the coach from 1981-85. Dillard guided Auburn to 10 regional appearances, which included a string of eight-straight. A fire destroyed the practice facility in 1995 putting a halt to the T igers’ streak of regional appearances. Dillard guided Auburn back to regional competition in 1999. Shannon Edmondson was the first gymnast at Auburn to earn All-American honors as she finished eighth on the bars in 1991. Becky Erwin became the first two-time All-American for the T igers. Erwin finished seventh in the all-around in 1993 and fourth on the floor in 1994. Erwin was also the first Auburn gymnast to score a perfect 10. She did it on the floor in 1993. She finished her career as a four-time All-American for the T igers. Jef f Thompson became the Tigers’ fourth head coach in 2000. Under Thompson’ s tutelage, the T igers set team records on the vault (49.400, ‘07), on the bars (49.500, ‘00), balance beam (49.600, 04), floor (49.600, ‘04) and overall (197.000, ‘04). In 2002, Thompson helped Sally Cantrell set a school record with a perfect 10.000 on the balance beam. Thompson coached Kristi Boyte and Courtney Puckett to new individual event Heather Brown was a two-time records in the vault (9.950) and all-around (39.500) in 2003. All-American in 1993 and 1995 Also in 2003, Thompson coached his squad to it s first appearance at the NCAA Championships since 1993. Thompson saw his first All-American, Courtney Puckett, in 2003, as she made the second team on bars. The 2004 season proved to be record-breaking, as the Tigers notched new team marks on beam, floor and team total, as well as, tied the AU vault record. In the home meet against top-ranked Florida, Auburn earned a record score of 197.000 and a new record in the floor with a score of 49.600. 2005 was a historic year in the history of Auburn gymnastics. The Tigers became the center of collegiate gymnastics in April when they hosted the NCAAChampionships for the first time in school history . Although the T igers failed to qualify as a team, a school-record four individuals advanced to the NCAAChampionships. The year was another step in the right direction for the T igers, as they qualified for their third straight regional appearance. It was the most consecutive trip s to regionals since the T igers reeled of f eight straight from 1987-94. Julie Dwyer wrote a new chapter in Auburn’s history when she became the first T iger and only the third athlete ever to be named SEC Freshman of the Year followed by SEC Gymnast of the Year in consecutive years. The 2006 gymnastics season was one that Tiger fans will look back on fondly. Julie Dwyer earned the school’ s second SEC Gymnast of the Year award, while junior Nicole Barnett was the first Auburn Gymnast to be awarded SEC Scholar Athlete of the Y ear . In addition, Auburn defeated LSU in Baton Rouge for the first time since 1992. Auburn got solid individual performances from freshman Lindsey Puckett and Dwyer. Puckett advanced to the NCAA Championships af ter winning the Northeast Regional vault title. She became just the second Auburn gymnast to win a regional vault title since Danielle Pritts in 1991. Dwyer advanced to the NCAA Championships in the all-around for the second year in a row, where she became just the third gymnast in school history to earn multiple All-America honors for her career, as she was named second team All-American on beam after tying for fifth. The Tigers marked the record books again in 2007 as Dwyer was named SEC Scholar Athlete of the Y ear . She is the first SEC Gymnast to be named Freshman of the Year, Gymnast of the Y ear and Scholar of the Y ear. Dwyer also made her way into the Auburn record books with highest the all-around score in school history (39.650). She also tied a school-high on vault with a score of 9.950, a feat she accomplished three times in the season. As a team, the T igers earned a school-high team score of 49.400 on vault. Auburn made an appearence at it’s fifth consecu- tive regional appearence and Dwyer qualified for the NCAA Championship for the third year in a row. Since the completion of the McWhorter Center in 2001, the T igers have had a top-notch training facility that has enabled them to improve upon their success. The facility is the second-largest collegiate training facility in the country . It will con- tinue to help the growth of the Auburn gymnastics program for years to come.
