Spring Work Day is April 2 nd , hope to see you there. During work day we may relocate some boats and trailers that we cannot match with their owners. If you can’t find your boat it may be moved to a corral. We will send out a list describing the boats moved if we do this.

Robert Key reports that rates have dropped. By the time you read this we should have a new loan agreement at a rate of 4.75% for five years. This will save us a full 1% on our interest rate and move our balloon payment out two more years. Thanks Robert. While we are talking about money I am going to speak of the unspeakable, a dues increase. We have gone for a number of years without raising dues. I don’t think we are budgeting enough in the operating budget for the house and grounds to do all the things that should be done, and other things always pop up.

Thanks to all who have been busy on our behalf: Johnny Johnson for supervising Rip Rap/Drainage repair out front, Rebecca and Johnny Dotterer cleaned the trophy case and all of the silver in it, Mark Alexander donated a swim ladder for the RC boat and mounted the new TV on the wall, Mace Coleman donated an aluminum panel for the head on Cleo, Dick Dommel, Gary Dowdey and many others have been adding enhancements to Cleo. She now has a functioning head, although many improve- ments remain

Our youth activities kicked off on March 13 th and the next meeting is April 10 th . Maria Hargrave will be recovering from hip surgery so if you can help please contact Maria or Dick Dommel. Please consider lending the Youth Program your Opti or Sun- fish for summer camps the first two weeks of June. Contact Dick Dommel at 803-438-1993. We will be responsible for repairs should any damage occur to your boat during summer camps.

Remember to send Dean Wood a picture for the photo directory, [email protected]

Ron Loring is promoting a summer match racing series in 420s, let him know if you are interested, [email protected] Anyone interested in the SAYRA Judge Program should contact Steve Szymanski, [email protected]. The program devel- ops personnel within the SAYRA area who can judge regattas at any SAYRA club and can progress to US Sailing Judge certifi- cation. The program is self-paced, on the job training under the mentorship of a US Sailing certified judge. The Easter Regatta is coming up, followed by a visit from a large bunny and an Easter egg hunt. The Aux will be cooking bur- gers. Come sail, volunteer, eat and have a hopping good time. April 30th is the Past Commodores/Past Presidents party. CSC Auxiliary NEWS by Joan Leamy, President

March was a busy month with two regattas and lots of burgers to cook. Thanks to Rita Mayfield and Redick Lor- ing for their supervision in the kitchen and to the many volunteers. The sailors were very complimentary about their cheeseburger lunch. During the Easter Regatta, we will serve lunch on Friday and Sunday so if you are able to help, please contact Rita or Redick.

Work Day is Saturday, April 2nd and CSCA has two projects that day. First, we ask everyone who has been plant sitting during the winter to return the plants by then with our thanks. Kris Kenline and volunteers will be working to put the greenery back on the porch along with some colorful flowers. Secondly, Anna Haltiwanger has advised me that the Easter Bunny needs some help getting the eggs “ready” to hide on Easter Sunday. Work Day should be a Fun Day, so please join us. We will start the day at 9 a.m.

April 30th is the Past Commodores/Past Presidents Party and it’s always a wonderful event. If anyone can make finger sandwiches or bring other delicious finger foods, please let me know. Thanks to those that have already signed up for food and helper duties. For this party, please bring the food on your best silver, pewter or glass dish. We try to give this event an elegant touch by dressing up for the occasion.

On March 8th, the Auxiliary held its meeting at Alodia’s and celebrated Mardi Gras with the traditional tiaras and beads distributed by Juli Calhoun . Jan Jernigan coordinated this event and decorated with feather masks and plants. She also brought the dessert. Congratulations to Debra Kelly for finding the lucky coin in the cake. We all chewed our dessert slowly that night! A big thanks to everyone who was involved, we had over 30 diners and a lot of fun. A big, big thanks to Jan for helping to make this a great evening. Jan works full time, has a mother in rehab, is the LMYRA Commodore, and co-chairs the CSCA Entertainment Committee, how does she do it all?

Please mark your calendars for a special dinner that Mary Roe is planning on Saturday, June 4th.

A belated thanks to Nan Nussler and Beverly Beauregard for being the chefs at our February meeting. The next meeting is Tuesday, April 12 at 6:30 p.m. Our chefs that evening will be Pat Freeman and Carolyn Tupper . Please join us, there is a small fee for the dinner. ~Joan

Sailing News ‘n Notes LMYRA Tiller Talk by Hootie Bushardt

LMYRA UNPLUGGED: Most folks have not thought about what goes on to keep PHRF sailing on Lake Murray a viable option for sailors. Besides the Flag Officers, there is a dedicated bunch of sailors that are working in the trenches keeping LMYRA operating smoothly. PHRF sailing has declined around the country, but Lake Murray has bucked the trend and maintained a strong presence. Thanks to these special sailors, PHRF sailing continues to have a bright future.

Dave Woodruff is our long time Rating Chairman. He is the guy behind the scenes that juggles skipper expecta- tions about the speed of their boats compared to their competitors. It is a thankless job but one that Dave has han- dled with skill and fairness for over 12 years. Dave has been instrumental in keeping PHRF sailing a vital part of the Lake Murray community. Have you ever wondered where those detailed Sailing Instructions come from? Well, Dick Dommel is the master mind behind those works of art. The rules of sailing have changed through the years and Dick has kept us on the cutting edge. Kris Kenline is a fairly new but active member of the Lake Murray sailing community and has taken on the tough job of Scorer . Few folks have the skills, energy or desire to handle this job successfully. Sailors want their results immediate, accurate and in their favor. As my mother use to say – people in hell want ice water but they ain’t gonna get it, but Kris tries with a smile.

Bill Grant is our notorious Treasurer . He loves taking money as much as I do – maybe more. He has helped keep LMYRA financially stable and kept embezzlement at a minimum. I trust Bill with my money but not my wife. Dan Ramage has stepped in and “volunteered” to become our Webmaster . He is continuing the work started by Aaron Kozloski . Dan updates our LMYRA website. Maintaining the website is a lot of work, but it has become a vital cog for keeping Lake Murray sailors in touch with sailing. Ron & Redick Loring during a weak moment agreed to be the Chairpersons for the 2011 Outback Cup Regatta. Please give them all your support and make the Out- back Cup Regatta continue to be the premier sailing event it has become. Hootie Bushardt - Most of you know me by the TillerTalks published each month. Please don’t hold that against me. But officially, I’m the Database/Sailing Chairman . I do most of the jobs that no one else wants to do: Maintaining skipper and boat information, race sched- ules, Race Committee procurement and of course the TillerTalk.

These sailors are committed to making sailing on Lake Murrray the best it can be. However, it takes more than a few dedicated folks, it takes the commitment of sailors from all over the lake to participate in sailing. Come out and join us on the water as sailors, crew and/or race committee. Experience how much fun and rewarding sailing can be.

Remember to mark on your calendar Saturday Apr. 9 and Apr. 16 for LMYRA Island Races 5 and 6 and Saturday May 14 for the Sail to the Pig Regatta by Windward Point Yacht Club.

See you on the water! ~ Hootie

An historical tidbit: The original drawings for the design of the club ‘s flagpole are still in the club archives. They were created by the late J.W. “Bill” Morgan, also co-founder of the Annual CSC Carol Sing. The pole was fabricated by Bill’s employer, Kline Iron and Steel Company.

Bill proudly displayed the club burgee on the front bumper of his car and recalled how it appeared to impress a guard at the Charleston Navy Yard gate as he drove up one day. He got a snappy sa- lute and was waved through. The original burgee plate, by the way, was designed by Kathy Gaddy’s husband, Larry. He made them via the silk screen process on aluminum blanks.
