In some ways the restrictions and personal danger are actually far worse than those encountered in wartime where at least some areas were not affected, people could still travel and the dangers were not directly on your doorstep. Whatever your personal attitude is to the pandemic and the way it has been handled / reported it has no doubt affected everyone whether through work, shopping, travel or leisure as almost everything has ground to a halt or been shut. Hopefully no-one has been affected health wise though with the age profile of our membership containing many in the vulnerable group I suspect there are many of you in the 12 week lockdown. Of our 1354 members 848 (64%) are 60+ of which 499 (38%) are over 70. Because of the ever changing speed of events I have constantly updated this piece and it will no doubt be out of date by the time it is read in print. At least if you have taken the pdf you get the news as soon after it has been penned. Hopefully this 80 pager, which still resembles what was normal until recently, will keep your spirits up and be safe. As far as our hobby goes you may still be able to practise it in glorious self isolation but only within the bounds of the current exercise or work advice if you can exercise, shop for food or work near railway facilities. Clearly the guidelines of separation should be adhered to but hopefully some of you will still be able to record the railway scene. For two thirds of the month I was receiving photos as normal but as of the 23rd when the ‘stay at home’ instruction came into force less have been forthcoming and then only from a handful of members who live near railways or work on them. Clearly there is however less activity on the railway with an emergency timetable introduced from the 23rd March 2020 and this crisis is going to have a long lasting impact, see FRANCHISE / NETWORK NEWS. Railway charters have all been cancelled / postponed and away from the mainline, preservation sites, galas or model shows have either been shut or have been postponed / cancelled. It will be interesting to see what happens after we get through this as the back end of 2020 could be very busy assuming all organisations survive. Sadly the loss of income will seriously affect preservation sites and several are pleading for financial support which I know many of you will no doubt give. The best thing we can all do is strongly support the events once we get back to ‘normality’. For our Society what was to have been our best year yet for visits has been devastated with all those up to the end of June cancelled with just Wishaw and Long Marston in abeyance, though at the moment unable to contact LM for any confirmation. Hopefully those booked, myself included, on the first Hope and Merehead / Whatley visit can be fitted in later in the year as all other visits are fully booked. I bet a few who didn’t take the chance to go to Carnforth in Jan are wishing they had now. Thankfully we have more visits in the mid to late summer than before which should be ok if the current restrictions do the job. DRS are still hoping to hold their Open Day in July but if not they are hopeful it can be re-arranged in the Autumn. With the media understandably concentrating almost exclusively on the coronavirus pandemic it must be annoying to those who were the victims of the floods that they have all but been forgotten yet they must be really struggling to deal with both crisis. The fact that flooding caused infrastructure damage and affected preserved railways was brought home whilst heading home from the AGM via the Waverley Heritage Railway (WRH) at Whitrope to see the Cl.142s which had recently arrived. The narrow B6399 south of the site had been scoured away in several places by the adjacent Whitrope Burn both of which descend through a hilly area. Fortunately being a Sunday work was suspended so was able to negotiate what was a closed road under repair. Newcastleton a small remote borders village few miles downstream of this and other water courses was badly flooded. The only good news out of this crisis is that emissions have fallen dramatically with air quality improving and it will be interesting to see what new policies emerge having had this enforced global experiment in travel reduction. Hopefully a new global imperative to tackle the bigger global threat will be seen as also the way to re-boot the global economy. On a personal note I have not had any spare time throughout the lock down as usual I have been stuck in doors on the computer, but at least no need to do any all nighters for now. I have never had an issue with nothing to do as always had more hobbies / voluntary work than time permits and work was mainly a source of income to conduct that part of my life. With 5 acres to maintain we have more 3 than
