Let's Get Started to work in construction Trades

There are a number of different trade and professional jobs in Construction and . You will over the next year develop your skills in one of the trades you have enrolled on.

To help you understand Construction before you enrol in September the Construction Department wants you to respond to the Scenario below, and email back to Brian ​ ​ Evans (Head of Construction).

Scenario - You have applied for an Apprenticeship in Construction and as part of the ​ interview process the company is asking you to answer the following activities and bring your report to the interview.

Activities

1. Describe the function of these electrical components a) Fuse Box b) RCBs c) Wall sockets d) Light switch e) Armored cable f) Smoke detector g) Dimmer switch

2. List as many different types of House Brick used in construction and why they are used? 3. Identify as many different types of wood joints used in Carpentry/Joinery 4. There different types of ‘joints’ used to join copper pipe, please identify these joints? 5. There are certain types of Building Regulations that housebuilders need to adhere to, please identify as many as possible? 6. Health and safety in Construction - what does this mean to you? 7. The current outbreak of Coronavirus has affected the work on building sites. What measures would you put in place for the safety of the workers while working together on a building site? 8. List as many safety signs use on a building site and for each sign explain the meaning? 9. List as many different types of trades in the construction industry i.e Grounds person, . 10. List the tools and equipment used in the following trades - Plumber, , Joiner/Carpenter and Bricklayer.

12. Write a short statement on why you have chosen to enrol on your course? Don't put… because I want to be a Bricklayer!!!! 13. What’s the difference between a Brown field site and a Green field site? 14. You have been asked to quote for a job in a private house to paint one Bedroom and to tile 1 Bathroom. The information you have been given:

a) Bedroom - 3000mm one wall, 3.5m for the second wall, 400cm for the third wall, 4m for the fourth wall and the height of the bedroom is 4m Question - How many tins of paint will you use approximately? And the cost ​ associated with painting the Bedroom if one tin of paint costs £22.40? b) Bathroom - 3m one wall, 4m second wall, 2.5m third wall, 3m fourth wall and the height of the Bathroom is 2.5m. The customer wants a specific tile size (150x150) - black in colour. Question - How many tiles do you need to cover the walls (approximately) and how ​ much would the cost be if each tile cost £1.15?

15. If a Plumber charges £45.00 per hour for their labour and they do 5 days work x 4hrs per day - what would be the cost of that Plumber for 5 days including VAT at 22%? 16. Your partner has asked you to build a Kennel for their dog in treated wood. The dog is a Great Dane! Estimate the wood/materials needed to build a kennel with a pitched roof. You decide the size but you need to create a costing sheet identifying the material needed: type of material, price, quantity, sizes. In addition, identify the tools and equipment needed to build the Kennel. 17. Identify the Spelling errors in this paragraph.
