1 Compilation of Canal Trade Articles from Alexandria COMPILATION OF CANAL TRADE ARTICLES FROM ALEXANDRIA GAZETTE AND VIRGINIA ADVERTISER AN ALEXANDRIA NEWSPAPER 1/1848 TO 5/1851 ARLINGTON COUNTY, VA Compiled by William Bauman C & O Canal Association Volunteer [email protected] JULY 2013 1 2 A. PREFACE This compilation of newspaper articles about the C. & O. Canal is one of a series. In 1848, the ALEXANDRIA GAZETTE was published daily by Edgar Snowden The microfilm boxes indicated that the contents went from Jan. 1, 1848 through May 30, 1851 which is true as regards the first and last edition. However, every edition between those two dates was not found, and every edition found did not contain articles about the C. & O. Canal. This compilation follows the format of the other compilations; specifically, the articles are transcribed in a two-column format as in the newspaper. Normally, articles from page 2 are not transcribed because they tend to be editorial or opinion pieces, which was also true for this newspaper. However, by 1848 the Alexandria Aqueduct had been built and there was some discussion about development of the Alexandria waterfront, north and south of the mouth of the Alexandria Canal. How many feet should the coal wharves be extended; should the development be with public funds or private funds; should the necessary lands be condemned with the attendant angst of loss of property rights, etc.? The editorials tend to be wordy vice concise; I made no condensation of them. Readers are encouraged to read: "THE ALEXANDRIA CANAL: Its History & Preservation" by Thomas Swiftwater Hahn & Emory L. Kemp, West Virginia University Press, 1992. Of particular interest is: Chapter 3, The Excavation and Rehabilitation of the Alexandria Canal Tide Lock and Basin. From Georgetown to Alexandria there were no locks; then there were four locks to the waterfront through the city. It was at the basins, between the locks, and on the waterfront where the commercial activity took place. There was also considerable competition between Alexandria, Georgetown and Washington city for the prospective coal trade, which was discussed in the editorials. Readers must bear in mind that these editorials were the thoughts and opinions of publisher Edgar Snowden; an opposing view has not been found. Also note that the canal boats mentioned under Canal Commerce were not likely the big coal freighters subsequently built by the hundreds in Cumberland. The origin of these boats (i.e. the boat yard in which they were constructed), their owner and even their captain remain to be found. Many more boats were coming down the canal than are recorded herein; their destination was Georgetown or Washington city and thus were of no interest to Alexandrians. I have also included several advertisements concerning steamboats operating from Alexandria. By the time the canal opened in 1850, the concept of steam-powered canal boats was not a new concept. Readers are encouraged to search the enclosed report for information on their ancestor as their time and interest permits. Feel free to send additional observations for the benefit of others. This proposition, even if its adoption were desirable, comes too late. At the annual meeting of the stockholders of the Alexandria Canal Company, held in the month of May, 1846, in which the Common Council was represented, the following resolution, on motion of H. C. Smith, Esq., was unanimously passed: "Resolved, That it is of the greatest importance to the interests of this Company and community that proper and ample accommodations for the Alleghany Coal trade should be provided at the outlet of the Alexandria Canal, either by the resources of this Company or in connection with the coal mining companies; and that, in order to an early and efficient action in this business, the President and Directors, in case they should consider it necessary, be authorized to appoint a Committee of the Stockholders to confer with the managers of those Companies on the subject." In accordance with this resolution, M. C. It begins with an overview of the geological setting of the city and development of the Mall. Each federal monument or building on the tour is briefly described, followed by information about its exterior stonework. The focus is on masonry buildings of the Smithsonian Institution, which date from 1847 with the inception of construction for the Smithsonian Castle and continue up to completion of the National Museum of the American Indian in 2004. The building stones on the tour are representative of the development of the Ameri­ can dimension stone industry with respect to geology, quarrying techniques, and style over more than two centuries. Wetzel November 2014 (revised) Mid -1920s, from a glass-plate negative (HSW) Sachse, 1884 (LOC) Foreword This short study of the almost forgotten (but soon to be resurrected) area of southwest Washington DC known as Buzzard Point grew out of a landmark nomination for the Buzzard Point Power Plant researched and written in 2014 on behalf of the Southwest Neighborhood Assembly. There was no dedicated study of the history of this curious neighborhood beyond its very early years (after which chronicles of southwest Washington move to the more northerly parts), and I decided to continue the work to fill this hole. Due to the work’s origin in the power plant that part of our story has been given somewhat disproportionate attention but I have left it that way; the information is interesting and useful. (Sections on the history of electrical power generation in Washington and the design/construction company Stone & Webster have been removed here but will be found in the nomination on file with the city’s Historic Preservation Office.) The supporting material used in this study has been deposited with the Historical Society of Washington. The city’s combined sewer and stormwater system dumps millions of gallons of raw sewage into the Anacostia and Potomac Rivers over 70 times annually during signifi cant rain events. While many groups, both public and private, attempt to clean the river, billions of dollars are still necessary over several years to remedy the combined sewer overfl ow (CSO) problem alone. Current plans for a solution include constructing large underground storage tanks that store millions of gal- lons of wastewater during overfl ow periods. Washington, however, once had a network of waterways that naturally drained the Federal City. At least three major stream systems—the Tiber Creek, James Creek and Slash Run—and over 30 springs fl owed within the boundaries of the emerging capital.

A key emerging resource expected to accelerate urbanization in southern Nigeria is the 140-kilometer oil sands belt that stretches across Edo, Ondo, Ogun, and Lagos states. Estimated by Nigeria's Ministry of Mines and Steel Development to contain 32-47 billion barrels of oil, Nigeria’s reserves of oil sands are the largest in all of Africa, and sixth largest in the world. Anticipating how resource development might spur urbanization and restructure landscapes in developing countries such as Nigeria poses a critical global challenge. Seeking to improve policy and planning mechanisms to respond to this challenge, the present research project asks two key questions: How might Nigeria’s future oil sands industry transform regional urban landscapes? What are potential transformative actions and decision points that may structure this future landscape? The project examines two historical cases: (1) Canadian oil sands development and urban impacts; and (2) Nigeria’s oil industry development and urban impacts in the Niger Delta. These cases are used as precedents to anticipate potential scenarios for future oil sands development. With the support of the Mellon Fellowship Supplemental Travel Grant, I traveled to Canada to document the spatial impacts of oil sands in Alberta. During my stay at Dumbarton Oaks, with the support of Harvard’s extensive library collections, I intensively investigated the territorial, environmental, urban, and social impacts of Nigeria’s oil industry.
