2021 PNW Kiwanis Mid-Winter Conference February 27 & 28 WELCOME!

My fellow PNW Kiwanis members,

Let me begin by thanking you for attending the Mid-Winter Conference for 2021. I know this virtual conference is nothing like what we wanted or expected, but I sincerely hope you enjoy the experience. We have tried to assemble relevant and timely information subjects for you to enjoy and learn.

I do not think I need to tell you just how proud I am of my Lt. Governor team. You know, the ones who named themselves Team Phoenix, for the mythical bird who rose from the ashes. I honestly believe that the name was not an accident. The current conditions, in my opinion, qualify as ashes, and the Team has struggled somewhat, but continues to rise. The fact is that the Team has grown. It’s grown far beyond the Lt. Governors. I have seen clubs adding members in great numbers, holding fundraisers that never existed before, and serving their communities in new and innovative ways. I stand in utter awe of the innovation and creativity that you, our members, have been able to accomplish. Team Phoenix now constitutes numbers far in excess of where we started, less than 5 months ago. I am humbled by your indomitable desire to serve the children and communities.

In conclusion, thank you for attending, welcome to our virtual conference, and I hope you find it worthwhile.

Kids need Kiwanis, and Kiwanis needs you.

That experience gave him an initial view of the Kiwanis world that resulted in his involvement in many Kiwanis activities with his official service in the Kiwanis family beginning as a member of Key Club and continuing today as a member of the Kiwanis Club of Westminster, Maryland, where he has served for 39 years. Outside of Kiwanis, Art has managed pharmacy practices for more than 45 years. His wife Vickie, a retired elementary school teacher, is a former president of the Kiwanis Club of Westminster. Throughout her time at Coeur d’Alene, she has dedicated a significant amount of time and energy outside of the classroom to leadership and service. She individually started the initiative at Coeur d’Alene High School to fundraise $12,000 for one sustainable well in the Kingdom of Eswatini, Africa for the Thirst Project. Since then, Coeur d’Alene High School has raised over $10,000 toward their goal under her leadership. After high school, she will be attending the Wharton School of Business of the University of Pennsylvania to study Business Economics as well as Social Impact and Responsibility.

JOHNATHAN BURNS - COMEDIAN & CONTORTIONIST Jonathan Burns always thought he was special. He was the kid who would put his leg over his head in gym class, get the dance party started at any wedding, or perform musical armpit farts to impress girls. Throughout middle school and high school Jonathan performed at dozens of birthday parties, church functions, camps, and nursing homes. “I left for college in 2000, and at my freshman orientation I showed my roommate a card trick. He was so excited that he made me show everyone from table to table in the cafeteria. People started calling me ‘Magic Jon’ and you could usually spot me on campus riding my unicycle to class.” While in school, Jonathan’s act started to break away from the traditional magician’s tricks, and he began experimenting with other skills including juggling, stand-up comedy, contortion, and sideshow stunts. Eventually, these new talents made their way into his variety show. In 2004, Jonathan graduated from college with a degree in Art Education. “I’ve been lucky enough to perform full-time since then, and I never had to get a ‘real job’.” Over the past twelve years his talents have taken him to over 400 college campuses across the United States and to special events in 9 countries around the globe. He has also performed stunts on The Show, the Late Show with , and The Late Late Show with James Corden. When he’s not on stage he can usually be found in an airport terminal or spending time with his lovely wife and two daughters. NICHOLAS HAFEZ for GOVERNOR ELECT! We all know this hashtag and it is true and direct to the hear of Kiwanis and why we serve. However, I believe that “Kiwanis Needs Kids” is just as important in fueling the success of our organization. When we interact with kids it energizes our purpose and keeps our passions high and our spirit young at hear. We need kids as much as they need us.

Serving with high passion keeps our members engaged and encourages them to serve with their own passion; and this in turn makes our clubs more attractive to prospective members and more responsive to our communities. This retains members and grows our membership for continued and expanded service to kids.

Join me with your passion to grow membership and serve more needs in our communities.
