As a comprehensive community college, Germanna provides quality, accessible, and affordable educational opportunities for the residents of the City of Fredericksburg and the counties of Caroline, Culpeper, King George, Madison, Orange, Spotsylvania and Stafford.

Germanna Community College • 2009-2010 Annual Report to the Community 1 “We promise that, no matter what happens, we will try to meet the needs of our area’s students, parents and businesses.”

-Dr. David Sam The President’s Message

Another exciting and challenging year has passed at Germanna Community College. Germanna’s ongoing growth continued, with enrollment rising by 10%. While this rate is slower than last year, it still means that we will double in size every 11 years. Our new Stafford Center saw an enrollment of over 1200 students and our commencement ceremony filled the Fredericksburg Expo Center to overflow.

In spite of ongoing cuts in state appropriations, we were able to expand our program offerings by adding an engineering technology program, an early childhood education program, and a LPN to RN Hybrid program. Because the national economy has hurt so many of our neighbors, Germanna will continue to try to meet the workforce and educational needs of those who planned on attending as well as the many whose life circumstances have sent them back to school.

Our Educational Foundation continues to support the college with scholarships, support for programs, financial assistance for students, monies for facilities and for cultural and academic activities and events. Included in this report is a summary of its successes.

This report provides one method of accountability to you, our stakeholders. It also highlights some of the successes and accomplishments of the college, its students, faculty, staff and volunteers over the past year. I hope that you find it as informative and inspiring as I do.

Sincerely,

Dr. David A. Sam, President

A Message from Dick Scheibe, Chairman Harold Scheibe, Chairman King George County This past year has been one of the most successful in the history of Germanna Community College. Despite C. Jill Johnson, Vice Chairman adverse economic conditions and severe fiscal constraints, we have seen the college grow and prosper as Madison County never before. Enrollment continues to rapidly expand, and, as the college celebrates the 40th anniversary of its founding, its strong leadership, its highly qualified and motivated faculty and staff, and its dynamic learning Bruce Davis environment are its essence. Spotsylvania County Diversity and accessibility of courses and curriculum, tailored to the needs of the communities served, are Sherry Gravatt cornerstones of our mission. Germanna’s syllabus has been expanded, and the Stafford County Center has Caroline County now joined the Locust Grove Campus, the Fredericksburg Area Campus, and the Daniel Technology Center in Culpeper to better distribute the Germanna learning experience throughout the service area. John H. Jenkins Culpeper County Through dedicated and coordinated efforts by Germanna’s leadership, the Educational Foundation, area governments, and the College Board, construction of the urgently needed Building 3 at the Fredericksburg Doug Rogers Area Campus in Spotsylvania has begun. Through this visionary project, and others in the planning stages, Orange County Germanna continues to respond to area educational wants and needs. The prospects for Germanna’s future are unbounded. Tony Troilo Community support has played a vital role in the success Germanna has achieved—it is much appreciated. Culpeper County Continued support is critical to realizing current objectives and other new initiatives, and only through a close Catherine Washington partnership between Germanna and the community it serves can the college meet and exceed the challenges Stafford County of the future.
