Saron Gas had their origins in Johannesburg, a city of South Africa, and the earliest days of the group saw their public appearances at parties, nightclubs, small-scale concerts and University venues, such as the University of Cape Town and the University of Stellenbosch, where they played for the lunch-time crowds in the Neelsie centre on the latter campus as late as the summer of 2001. As Saron Gas, the band released its first album, Fragile on Musketeer Records, in 2000 in South Africa. Upon achieving success on the South African music charts, Wind-up Records took an interest in Saron Gas' melodic-yet-heavy sound and signed them to the label. The band was asked to change their name due to Saron Gas being a homophone of sarin gas, a deadly nerve agent discovered (but never used in war) by Nazi Germany during World War II.[citation needed] The band changed its name to Seether in honor of 's song titled, "Seether". Success and Disclaimer II. After Disclaimer was released, the band went on a non-stop touring route in hopes of boosting sales and name recognition. Upon completing the tour, the band had planned to go into the studio and record their second release. However, they were instead tapped to support on a worldwide tour that postponed their recording plans by almost a year. On this tour, the band reworked the acoustic ballad "Broken" into an electric ballad and had of Evanescence share vocal duties with Morgan during live performances. Inspired by the positive reaction the duet got on the road and perhaps fueled by a budding romance between Lee and Morgan, the band headed into the studio and quickly recorded an alternate version of "Broken" with Amy Lee on vocals. The song, along with a new song titled "Sold Me", was featured on the soundtrack for the 2004 film The Punisher and was massively successful, bringing the band fame in the US, the UK and Australia in particular. Morgan has stated that the hit song relates an incident where the band was subjected to what the record company wanted rather than what the band wanted. Disclaimer II, an alternate version of the original album with many of the songs remixed or re-recorded as well as eight extra tracks, was released in late 2004. , . In 2005, the band released their follow-up album Karma and Effect. The original title for the album was Catering to Cowards, but the band's instructed them to change the name. [3] "Karma and Effect" debuted at number 8 of the US album charts and was certified gold in the US and Canada. The album spawned three singles, "Remedy", "Truth" and "The Gift". "Remedy" reached number 1 of the US Charts, becoming the band's first number 1 single. Seether released an acoustic CD/DVD set titled One Cold Night, recorded on 22 February 2006 at Grape Street in Philadelphia. Morgan, who had been suffering from a stomach ailment, decided to do an acoustic performance of their set-list rather than cancel the show. Shaun has stated that the label chose to make the album without obscenities, which is the reason why "Needles" and "Burrito" are not on the album. Guitarist departure, rehab. On June 16, 2006, it was announced via Seether's official site that lead guitarist Pat Callahan had chosen to leave the band. The exact reason for Callahan's departure is unknown, but regarding his feelings over the situation, Shaun Morgan commented: "Um? relieved a little? actually a lot. He was the guy in the band that was always our naysayer, and he was the negative energy as far as writing. I personally have no love lost, which is weird for some reason 'cause he was my friend for four years. But when he walked out, it kinda walked out with him."[2] Morgan went into rehab for alcoholism in August 2006, forcing the band to cancel their tour with and . Finding Beauty in Negative Spaces. Morgan had claimed prior to the new album's debut that it would be more diverse than previous efforts. Its release was delayed due to the sudden suicide of Morgan's brother, Eugene Welgemoed. Produced by , the album finally hit the shelves on October 23, 2007. "Finding Beauty in Negative Spaces" debuted at number 9 in the Billboard 200 album charts, selling 57,000 copies in the first week. The artwork for the album was illustrated by David Ho. The first single, "Fake It," reached the top position in the US Mainstream Rock Charts and Modern Rock Charts, remaining on top for at least 9 weeks on both charts. It was also the theme for WWE's 2008. Since the success of "Fake It," a second single, "," has been released and has reached the #1 spot on the Modern Rock Tracks chart and the top 2 with its mainstream counterpart. As of February 15, 2008, Troy McLawhorn of joined the band as a touring guitarist, and has since been made an official member. McLawhorn previously did a stint as Evanescence's replacement guitarist during the last leg of tour. To support the release of the hugely successful second single, "Rise Above This," Seether launched a tour in early 2008 that lasted for much of the year and saw them share the stage with several bands for several different legs, including Three Days Grace, , , , Skillet, Red, , Flyleaf, , and Staind. Shaun has also announced that with 2009 marking Seether's tenth anniversary, a new release coinciding with the anniversary has been negotiated with Wind-Up Records. It has been said to include old unreleased tracks and demos, including Saron Gas demos, but exact details are yet to be confirmed. Seether claimed their first South African Music Award in the category "Best Rock: English" for Finding Beauty in Negative Spaces. They also won the first MTV Africa Music Award for Best Alternative Artist. On August 5, 2008, Seether released an iTunes Originals album that follows the pattern of previous releases in the series, featuring interviews between chosen album tracks and reworked versions of previously released songs. The video for "Breakdown" was released on November 12 after a delay from its original October 23 scheduled release date. In early 2009, a new song titled "No Shelter" was featured on the NCIS Official TV Soundtrack, released on February 10. One of the most enduring acts to come out of the post-grunge boom of the early 2000s, South Africa's Seether have managed to remain true to their Nirvana/-loving roots while maintaining just enough forward-thinking momentum to stay relevant. Poison the Parish is the band's seventh studio long-player, and their first to be issued via frontman Shaun Morgan's label imprint Canine Riot Records -- he also handles all of the production duties. A much beefier affair than 2014's perfectly meaty but slick corporate Isolate and Medicate, the 12-track set -- there is also a deluxe edition that adds three more cuts -- is by far the group's heaviest outing to date, but Seether have always leaned harder on the alt-rock side of the post-grunge spectrum, so as per usual, all of that might is tempered by hooks aplenty. Opener "Stoke the Fire" does just what its title implies, delivering slow burn grooves and a circuitous lead melody that falls somewhere between and Load-era . Follow- up "Betray and Degrade" fares even better on the earworm front, as does the stripped-down lead single "Let You Down," but things start to bleed together as the LP reaches its mid-section, with competent, yet largely forgettable midtempo offerings like "Against the Wall" and "Let Me Heal" hitting the breaks on what was initially a pretty wild ride. Luckily, things pick up again with the punishing "Nothing Left" and the unabashedly -esque "Count Me Out" -- the brooding, acoustic-led closer "Sell My Soul" gets by on mood alone. Poison the Parish doesn't deviate too far from the structural blueprints of prior outings, but it's hardly the work of a band just going through the motions. Three years after releasing its critically acclaimed record "Poison The Parish" , SEETHER returns with "Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum" . Translating to "If You Want Peace, Prepare For War", the LP features 13 new tracks, a primal mix of euphoria and misery, undoubtedly some of the strongest material of their illustrious career, including the beautifully tormented first single "Dangerous" . "These songs are carefully crafted to nestle in your ears like a tiny velvet rabbit clutching a switchblade," says guitarist/vocalist Shaun Morgan , his flair for vivid imagery on full display. The new album's haunting, unforgettable "Dangerous" is an instant standout. While the band prefers to leave "Dangerous" open to interpretation, lyrics like, "It's so dangerous all this blamelessness / and I feel like I lost all the good I've known" are a passionate and pointed indictment of self and society at large. "Beg" , where Morgan snarls, "See hope fading out of your eyes / This time the pain is going to feel unreal," is similarly unrelenting. The chorus’s point-blank demand, "beg, motherfucker!" is a primal rock rallying cry. The push-pull on "Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum" is as dynamic as it is memorable as Morgan brings his intimate singer- sensibility to the band's heavy rock grooves. He said: "A lot of it was written over the course of about 10 months. There were about 40 to 45 songs in contention for the album. We ended up settling on recording 21 tracks, which is more than we've recorded before. And yeah, we've kind of whittled down the album to include 13 tracks." He continued: "It's my favorite album we've done to date — by far. The songs, I think, are the strongest songs we've written. I'm really super proud of it. I produced it again, with Matt Hyde [ SLAYER , DEFTONES ] engineering and Corey Lowery [guitar], my boy, as assistant engineer, and I think it turned out killer. We worked in a little place called Dark Horse studio [in Franklin, Tennessee], and we did 21 tracks, I think, in about 17 days, which, I think, is a testament to everybody having had the demos for a while and having learned it, so by the time we got in there, we didn't waste any time. We worked long days — we started at about ten o'clock in the morning and worked till about ten o'clock at night. So there was no noon-till-six-type stuff that I've had to deal with in the past. "I think you'll like the new album," he added. "I do. [ Laughs ] So hopefully that's universal." Morgan and Stewart formed SEETHER in South Africa in 1999 under the name SARON GAS . The band released its first album, "Fragile" , in 2000, and eventually caught the attention of American record label Wind-Up Records . On Seether's 2011 opus, Holding Onto Strings Better Left to Fray, disillusionment, anger, and pain are central themes. Morgan's writing has always felt real, offering up some of the genres better moments with 2005's Karma and Effect and 2007's Finding Beauty in Negative Spaces. With this opus, Morgan has again struck a chord. "Desire for Need" is a four-on-the-floor rock joint that finds Morgan reaching for falsetto, which adds an alternative, bluesy vibe to the song's feel. Tunes like "Country Song" and "Master of Disaster" are stamped with Dale Stewart's sexy bass grooves as well as anthemic vocals. On the latter, Morgan's vocal melody actually takes on a Queensrÿche feel. One shining moment is the ballad "Pass Slowly." Musically, the band lays down an ethereal groove that reaches its pinnacle behind well-built guitar and bass riffs. Holding Onto Strings Better Left to Fray is another journey into the mind of Shaun Morgan: through heartbreak and rebirth he still has a lot to say about betrayal.
