Forehand, Ph.D., Dean of the Graduate College ABSTRACT For Latin@s in the United States, navigating the spectrum of racial and ethnic identities can be complicated. This same complication has the potential to affect one of the largest groups of Latin@s in the nation: Mexican-Americans living in Texas or Tejanos. Through qualitative analyses of interviews and surveys and the use of an ecological framework on identity development theories for Latin@s, Native Americans, Multiracial peoples and those in the Mexican diaspora, this study examines various factors that influences the ethnoracial identity choice of Tejano college students. Findings revealed that there were several common themes across all the participants, even those who did not identify as Tejano. Geographical origin of parents and family and community influence emerged as a noticeable reason as to why students identified as Tejano. A connection to generations of family in the United States and Mexico also impacted how strongly students identified ethnoracially as Tejano. In addition, experiences of “not being enough” galvanized some students to a stronger Tejano identity. Other themes included the impact of physical appearance, growing up with Spanish in their household, and Tejano representation in media. Recommendations are targeted to staff and faculty who work with Latin@ students, especially Mexican-Americans in Texas, to provide opportunities to explore and support a more complex ethnoracial identity including connection with their cultural traditions, education on Latin@ history, an examination on the impact of language on identity, and consideration of ethnoracial affinity group work. Chapter title: Chapter 3. “The Mexican-American Press and The Spanish Civil War” Word Count: 8,052 Thesis title: “Internationalism In The Barrios: Hispanic-Americans and The Spanish Civil War, 1936-1939.” Thesis abstract: The ripples of the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) had a far-reaching effect that touched Spanish speaking people outside of Spain. In the United States, Hispanic communities –which encompassed Puerto Ricans, Cubans, Mexicans, Spaniards, and others— were directly involved in anti-isolationist activities during the Spanish Civil War. Hispanics mobilized efforts to aid the Spanish Loyalists, they held demonstrations against the German and Italian intervention, they lobbied the United States government to lift the arms embargo on Spain, and some traveled to Spain to fight in the International Brigades. This thesis examines how the Spanish Civil War affected the diverse Hispanic communities of Tampa, New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. Against the backdrop of the war, this paper deals with issues regarding ethnicity, class, gender, and identity. It discusses racism towards Hispanics during the early days of labor activism. It examines ways in which labor unions used the conflict in Spain to rally support from their members to raise funds for relief aid. It looks at how Hispanics fought against American isolationism in the face of the growing threat of fascism abroad. CHAPTER 3. Can I go kid and teenager, or can I jump back and forth? C: Yeah, you can do kid and teenager, you can do both. J: Something I was really attracted to as a kid was, I remember this show, it was called Siempre Domingo, in English it was Always on Sunday and my mom would always watch it, and my earliest memories of that is that she would always, when a good song would start she would dance with me so I'd be there dancing with her on Sundays as my younger brothers and sisters were watching, always be laughing you know. It was something that had a strong significant meaning to me, emotionally, spiritually, and linguistically because through music I was able to preserve my Spanish; but in a sense the kind of music I listened to was mainly Nortena, northern music, accordion, saxophone, usually attributed to Northern Mexico, the states of Chihuahua, Coahuila, Sonora, Sinaloa. But us being from Nayarit the west coast of Mexico, Nayarit, and Durango, well Durango's not west coast but its close enough, it's a region, Banda, so the trumpet, the trombone, I love that music. I think in life I had such a difficult upbringing, music was a way to escape, a way to heal, a way to dance, a way to dress, a way to talk. So yeah I love mUSlC.

Contributing factors to the public reaction to immigrants in general and Latinos specifically include the sheer size of recent immigration, the increasing prevalence of Latinos in the work force, and the geographic concentration of Latinos in certain areas of the country. Based on a conference held at the Julian Samora Institute(Michigan) in April 1995, this book is organized around two main themes. The first discusses patterns of immigration and describes several immigrant communities in the United States; the second looks in depth at immigration issues, including economic impacts, employment, and provision of education and other services to immigrants.
