Mr TERRY BYARD, SOUTHERN TASMANIAN LICENSED ANGLERS' ASSOCIATION, WAS CALLED, MADE THE STATUTORY DECLARATION AND WAS EXAMINED. CHAIR (Mr Hall) - Good morning, Mr Byard. We have your submission, thank you very much. Is there anything you would like to that? Mr BYARD - Thank you, Mr Chairman. Certainly there are a couple of things I would like to say. I would like to thank the committee for giving us the opportunity to make the presentation here today. You might ask what a bunch of anglers is doing involving itself in this sort of rather complex issue and it is probably a good question but I suppose the heart of the answer to that lies in the fact that in part this issue deals with an area which is very significant to anglers in as much that both lakes Sorell and Crescent and the Clyde over time have been a very popular angling destination and also we have seen in more recent years a very significant decline in both the lakes and the river. We have Lake Crescent which has been infested, unfortunately, by carp, with one issue of decline there in the lakes. We have also seen a major water quality decline in Lake Sorell since around about the late 1990s and 2000. We also have seen a decline in the Clyde River as a fishery, which I will comment on a bit later. The association, because of its involvement and commitment to this sort of area, decided that we ought to be involved in the overall water management process which is articulated through the Government's new water management legislation and which calls for the development of water management plans right across the State in a whole range of systems and catchments. -

INTERLAKEN LAKESIDE RESERVE 2016 Interlaken Lakeside Reserve is a wetland of international significance and one of four Ramsar sites in Southern Tasmania Interlaken Lakeside Reserve –T. Lakeside Interlaken www.nrmsouth.org.au Located 20 km west of Tunbridge on the eastern edge of the Central Highlands the Ramsar-listed Interlaken Lakeside Reserve lies on the north-western corner of Lake Crescent. It is one of six large wetlands that are a unique feature of the Lake Crescent – Sorell system. It is home to the rare golden galaxias fish and a diverse algae Robertsons (phytoplankton) community. Marsh Ramsar values In 1982, the Interlaken Lakeside LAKE SRELL Reserve was listed as a wetland Silver of international significance Plains under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands. Carp is an exotic, benthivorous fish implicated in degradation of wetlands throughout southeastern mainland Australia. In the present study, the age profile of a stock in Lake Crescent, Tasmania, was determined by length-frequency analysis and inspection of annulus patterns in whole and sectioned otoliths. Marginal increment analysis was attempted to validate age assessments for fish captured in 1995 and 1996. The available samples limited formal validation to age group III+, but it is clear that the January 1993 year-class was dominant among other fish of 1-6 years of age. Future monitoring should include monthly observations of age structure, reproduction and recruitment. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY This Environmental Review document is the second in a series of six reports which describe Hydro Tasmania’s operations and provide an overview of aquatic environmental issues in each of the major catchment areas that are influenced by hydro-generation activities. This document fulfils key commitments in Hydro Tasmania’s Aquatic Environmental Policy. A major part of Hydro Tasmania’s Water Management Review process is community consultation. As Hydro Tasmania commences its Water Management Review of the Derwent Catchment, this document will assist community members and organisations to understand the environmental issues and management operations which currently exist in the catchment. The Derwent Catchment covers an area of approximately 8,800 km2 in south-east and central Tasmania. The area encompasses the catchments of the Derwent River and several tributary rivers including the Ouse, Nive and Dee. The Great Lake Catchment, which drains part of Tasmania’s Central Plateau, previously contributed water to the Derwent Catchment. However, since the construction of the Poatina Power Scheme in 1965, the majority of the water from this catchment is now diverted into the South Esk Basin. Information about the Great Lake Catchment is contained in the South Esk – Great Lake Environmental Review document (Hydro Electric Corporation, 1999a). The hydro-electric power developments in the Derwent Catchment that are currently operating form a relatively complex system, which can be simplified into three main components. The upper Derwent system utilises water from the upper Derwent River and its headwaters and from several small diversions, it consists of 2 storages and 2 power stations. -
