College, Perinthalmanna 3 Self Study Report PMSA Pookoya Thangal Panakkad Puthiya Maliyekkal Sayyid Ahammed alias PMSA Pookoya Thangal (1917-1975) was a charismatic leader and social reformer from Malappuram district of Kerala. Malappuram, a backward area historically, was supported and nourished by the visionary leadership of Pookkoya Thangal, through many programmes aimed at ameliorating the inherent backwardness of it, by promoting women education. He belonged to a family known as Kodappanakkal Tharavad. He was in the fore front in inculcating the values of tolerance and mutual respect among the people of Kerala. He worked hard for bringing education to Muslim women at a time when it was considered that education was not an immediate necessity for women. He was successful in calling the attention of the vast majority of people and led them to enlightenment through his concerted efforts. The College is dedicated to him, cherishing his contributions in the empowerment of a generation which was groping in darkness. The humble beginning of the advancement of this educationally backward area can be located in the contributions made by PMSA Pookoya Thangal. He was instrumental in developing an ideology which favoured the uplift of the marginalized and weaker sections. Pookoya Thangal Memorial Govt. College, Perinthalmanna 4 Self Study Report PREFACE Pookoya Thangal Memorial Government College was established in the year 1975 as the second Arts and Science College in government sector in Malappuram district. So far, the institution has lit up the lamp of higher education in the minds of around 13,000 youngsters. As the institution goes for the maiden accreditation by National Assessment and Accreditation Council, we have deep sense of contentment on having been able to change the lives of a few thousands, who were otherwise been outside the limelight of education. It was in the year 2009 that the college council took a decisive resolution to go for NAAC Accreditation by the year 2014. Since then, a variety of programmes, projects, and plans, funded by government or from own fund were formulated and efforts taken to implement it meticulously. Most of them are complete, while some of them are progressing and a few are yet to begin. While looking back at the last five years, we are very happy to see that a commendable degree of quality improvement has been achieved in core sectors of teaching, learning, evaluation, research, extension, infrastructure, learning resources and governance as an outcome of our endeavour. When all set to the assessment by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council, we are well aware of the fact that what has been done and achieved is only a fraction of what is expected of this institution by its stake holders. But, we firmly believe that the cohesive bond among students, teachers, parents, and the extended society exercise will certainly help us to overcome. This Self Study Report is a bona fide record of various activities, initiatives and tasks undertaken since the year 2009 onwards. With a sense of pleasure, pride and hope, I am submitting this self study report for assessment and accreditation. Prof. C.T.Lilly Perinthalmanna 28-10-2014 Pookoya Thangal Memorial Govt. Declaration by the Head of Institution Pookoya Thangal Memorial Govt. College, Perinthalmanna 7 Self Study Report EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Pookoya Thangal Memorial Govt. College, Perinthalmanna 8 Self Study Report EXECUTIVE SUMMARY SWOC ANALYSIS OF P.T.M. GOVERNMENT COLLEGE PERINTHALMANNA Pookoya Thangal Memorial Government College Perinthalmanna is one of the oldest government colleges in the district. It is located at Pathaikkara near Perinthalmanna. It is the only government college that offers both UG and PG programmes in the Taluk. It caters to the needs of higher education of around six hundred students hailing mostly from economically and socially backward families. The college offers five UG programmes and four PG programmes. It is located in a quiet and sprawling campus of 25.01 acres of greenery away from the noise of the city. It is affiliated to the University of Calicut and is recognised by the University Grants Commission under section 2(f) 12(b). Now, the college is looking forward to get accredited by NAAC. Perinthalmanna was one of the less developed parts of Malappuram districts until recently. There weren’t any higher education institutions in and around Perinthalmanna either in the public, or in the private sector. Government Sanskrit College Pattambi was the nearest higher education institution which was around twenty five kilometres away from here. Government Polytechnic College, Angadippuram was the first post metric institution in the region. It was in 1975, that the functioning of Pookoya Thangal Memorial Government College started, using the temporary building facility extended by the Government Polytechnic College and with only two pre degree batches. Later on, one more Pre Degree batch was added to it. To accommodate the immense demand from applicants, the college functioned in two shifts, having around 1100 students on the roll. Thereafter, it took twelve long years to find a campus of its own at Pathaikkara, three kilometers away from Perinthalmanna town. After a long period of dormancy, the college was upgraded, by sanctioning Under Graduate programmes in Arabic, English, Mathematics, Business Administration and Physics in the years 1991,1993,1998,1999, and 2004 respectively. Later on, Post Graduate programmes in Arabic and English were started in the years 2001 and 2012, and PG in Mathematics and Commerce were sanctioned in the academic year 2013-14. The enthusiastic efforts of the prominent luminaries in initiating higher education in this area will always be remembered. Strengths 1. Being a government college, offering quality higher education for free to all deserving meritorious, socially and economically backward students, it enjoys solid support from all its stakeholders. People’s representatives of the locality, state government, Director of Collegiate Education, UGC and the University of Calicut have been extending their support and care. We have a dedicated PTA and Alumni Association. It is Plastic free campus since 2014. Pookoya Thangal Memorial Govt. College, Perinthalmanna 9 Self Study Report 2.
