Bus Information Home to School Transport Home to School Transport The East Riding of Yorkshire Council ceased to allow Woldgate’s out-of-catchment pupils to travel on their bus services with effect from the 1st September 2013. We therefore contract buses to replace the Local Authority provision so that those pupils living in the Bubwith, Driffield, Holme-upon-Spalding Moor and Market Weighton areas may attend Woldgate School. The Local Authority no longer subsidise the transport cost on their services. We currently charge £579 for travel on our B1, H1 and M1 services and £650 for the D1 and, at this price, we are still providing a substantial subsidy. We will endeavour to minimise any price rises in the next academic year, within the financial constraints placed upon Woldgate School. The viability of these bus services will be reviewed annually and you will be kept informed of any proposed changes. Awareness of the number of pupils each bus will need to accommodate would be greatly assisted if, by beginning of November 2018, you would kindly confirm your school transport requirements for the next academic year. You can do this by emailing Woldgate School ([email protected]) giving the names of the children you would like out of catchment bus transport for and the bus route they would require – these are detailed in the Bus Route section of this booklet. East Riding of Yorkshire in Catchment Transport Current guidelines state that free transport to enable a child to attend a secondary school will be provided if the child is in Years 7 to 11 and: The child is attending their catchment area school and the only available routes to the catchment area school from the child’s home are more than three miles. OR The parent’s application for a place for their child at a school is refused, free transport will be provided to the school allocated in accordance with East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s co-ordinated scheme for secondary school admissions if the only available routes to the school allocated in that way are more than three miles. If a place comes available for the child at their catchment area school before the child is on roll at the school allocated under the co-ordinated scheme, the entitlement to free transport to the allocated school will be withdrawn. OR The child is attending a school which is not their catchment area school and the child’s parents have not been able to secure a place at a school nearer to their home and the only available routes to the school the child is attending from the child’s home are more than three miles. OR The child is entitled to free school meals or the child’s parents are in receipt of their maximum level of Working Tax Credit and the school the child is attending is either one of their three nearest qualifying schools which is above 2 miles but less than 6 miles from their ordinary place of residence; or it is the nearest suitable qualifying school preferred by the child’s parents on the grounds of the parents’ religion or belief and the school is more than 2 miles but not more than 15 miles from the child’s home address. The council does not provide any free transport for college students (those who are over the age of 16, but under the age of 19 on 31st August of the academic year), even if the student received it in secondary school. However, they do provide college bus/taxi services for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities. This is not free though and you must pay an annual £540 contribution towards it. Read more about travel for those with learning difficulties and/or disabilities on the Local Offer website: www.eastridinglocaloffer.org.uk. Any spaces left on these services can be used by students who buy a travel pass. Spare places are allocated on a priority basis. Read about travel pass costs and find out more about buying a travel pass on the East Riding website: www2.eastriding.gov.uk For pupils or students who don’t wish to buy a pass, they may want to use public bus services. Below is a list of Villages in the catchment area for Woldgate School that are entitled to free school transport. (Please note students that are entitled to free transport will receive a letter to apply for a travel pass after March 2019) Allerthorpe Givendale Millington Heights Uncleby Burnby Gowthorpe Nunburnholme Wilberfoss Bishop Wilton Huggate Newton upon Derwent Warter Bugthorpe Hayton Storwood Yapham Bolton High Catton Sutton upon Derwent Yapham Mill Bielby Kirby Underdale Stamford Bridge Youlthorpe Everingham Low Catton Seaton Ross East Cottingwith Melbourne Skirkenbeck Full Sutton Meltonby Thorpe le Street Fangfoss Millington Thornton Distance Measurement The distance measured is the shortest available route using the public road network from the point at the child’s normal place of residence where the child joins the public road network (for example, the front gate) to the nearest approved entry point to the school’s site. The distance will be measured on a computerised GIS mapping system using Ordnance Survey information. The courts have defined an “available route” as one “along which a child accompanied as necessary can walk with reasonable safety to school. It does not fail to qualify as ‘available’ because of dangers which would arise if the child is unaccompanied.” The guidelines produced by the Local Authority Road Safety Officers Association will be used to determine whether or not a route is an available home to school walking route. In determining the availability of a route, the authority will take into account any restrictions on a parent’s ability to accompany their child imposed by any disability the parent may have. Transport Provision It is for East Riding of Yorkshire Council to decide the means of and arrangements for transport, including the issue of and requirements to carry passes and tickets. Such transport may be by way of contracted services, or local bus or rail services. Pupils are collected as near to their home as reasonably possible. Some pupils may have to walk a reasonable distance to and from home to meet the transport. However, the designated picking up/setting down point will not exceed one mile from the pupil’s home. The responsibility for ensuring a child’s safety in getting to and from the designated picking up/setting down point rests with the parent/guardian/carer. Wherever possible, in arranging transport, the Council will ensure that the journey times do not normally exceed one and quarter hours for a student attending a secondary school. Information for students who are not eligible for free school transport Students are able to buy a paid in advance bus pass if there are seats available on services at a yearly cost of £540.00 or this can be paid monthly by direct debit – 9 months at £60.00 per month. The services this applies to are listed below: 1W / 4W/5W/6W/7W/8W/9W/11W/12W/13W As the above contracts are registered services students can alternatively pay a daily fare, a single ticket costs £2.50 and a return ticket costs £4.00. BUSWISE is a partnership between East Riding Council, schools, parents, pupils and local bus companies. This partnership will work together to ensure that everyone has a safe and pleasant journey using either the school bus or public transport. Any concerns relating to school transport can be reported on the BUSWISE website and will then be investigated. www.buswise.co.uk. • U DDBA Papers of the Barnards Family 1401-1945 of South Cave
Hull History Centre: Papers of the Barnards Family of South Cave U DDBA Papers of the Barnards Family 1401-1945 of South Cave Historical background: The papers relate to the branch of the family headed by Leuyns Boldero Barnard who began building up a landed estate centred on South Cave in the mid-eighteenth century. His inherited ancestry can be traced back to William and Elizabeth Barnard in the late sixteenth century. Their son, William Barnard, became mayor of Hull and died in 1614. Of his seven sons, two of them also served time as mayor of Hull, including the sixth son, Henry Barnard (d.1661), through whose direct descendants Leuyns Boldero Barnard was eventually destined to succeed. Henry Barnard, married Frances Spurrier and together had a son and a daughter. His daughter, Frances, married William Thompson MP of Humbleton and his son, Edward Barnard, who lived at North Dalton, was recorder of Hull and Beverley from the early 1660s until 1686 when he died. He and his wife Margaret, who was also from the Thompson family, had at least seven children, the eldest of whom, Edward Barnard (d.1714), had five children some of whom died without issue and some had only female heirs. The second son, William Barnard (d.1718) married Mary Perrot, the daughter of a York alderman, but had no children. The third son, Henry Barnard (will at U DDBA/14/3), married Eleanor Lowther, but he also died, in 1769 at the age of 94, without issue. From the death of Henry Barnard in 1769 the family inheritance moved laterally.

318 SHORTER CONTRIBUTIONS An Early Roman Fort at Thirkleby, North Yorkshire By MARTIN MILLETT and RICHARD BRICKSTOCK ABSTRACT This paper reports the discovery through aerial photography of a Roman fort at Thirkleby, near Thirsk in North Yorkshire. It appears to have two structural phases, and surface finds indicate that it dates from the Flavian period. The significance of its location on the intersection of routes north–south along the edge of the Vale of York and east–west connecting Malton and Aldborough is discussed in the context of Roman annexation of the North. Keywords: Thirkleby; Roman fort; Roman roads; Yorkshire INTRODUCTION The unusually dry conditions in northern England in the summer of 2018 produced a substantial crop of new sites discovered through aerial photography. By chance, the Google Earth satellite image coverage for parts of Yorkshire has been updated with a set of images taken on 1 July 2018, during the drought. Amongst the numerous sites revealed in this imagery – often in areas where crop-marks are rarely visible – is a previously unknown Roman fort (FIG.1).1 The site (SE 4718 7728) lies just to the west of the modern A19, on the southern side of the Thirkleby beck at its confluence with the Carr Dike stream, about 6 km south-east of Thirsk. It is situated on level ground at a height of about 32 m above sea level on the southern edge of the flood plain of the beck, which is clearly visible on the aerial images. A further narrow relict stream bed runs beside it to the south-east.

  • Friendly Societies in East Yorkshire
Bands and Banners George Tutill - Banner Maker George Tutill was born in the market town of Howden in the East Riding in 1817. George was the only child of Thomas Tutill, who was a miller, and Elizabeth. By the time George was twenty one he had moved to Hull and in June 1838 he married Emma Fairfield. He was known as an artist and exhibited a number of landscape paintings in London between 1846 and 1858. It was, however, as an entrepreneur of banners and regalia making that Tutill made his reputation and fortune. He moved to premises in City Road, London, and many societies went to Tutill’s for their emblems, regalia and banners, such as Friendly Societies, Trade Unions, Freemasons and Sunday Schools. George Tutill was active in the friendly society ‘The Ancient Order of Foresters’ from the 1840’s. Front cover of the 1895 Tutill catalogue Tutill advertisement George Tutill produced the banners from raw silk that was woven to the required size on a purpose built jacquard loom. The silk was then painted in oils on both front and back. Next, they were highly embellished with golden scrollwork with ornate lettering on streamers, and the central painted image, would be supplemented by inset cameos. The purchase of a banner was an extravagance entered into as soon as a society’s funds and membership allowed. With dimensions of up to 12 feet by 11 feet a Tutill banner could require eight men to carry it; two to carry each of the vertical poles and four more to hold the The studio of George Tutill at City Road, Oddfellows sash and badge made by George Tutill.

ROADS AND TURNPIKE TRUSTS IN EASTERN YORKSHIRE by K. A. MACMAHON, Senior Staff Tutor in Local History, The University of Hull © East YQrk.;hiT~ Local History Society '96' ROADS AND TURNPIKE TRUSTS IN EASTERN YORKSHIRE A major purpose of this survey is to discuss the ongms, evolution and eventual decline of the turnpike trusts in eastern Yorkshire. The turnpike trust was essentially an ad hoc device to ensure the conservation, construction and repair of regionaIly important sections of public highway and its activities were cornple menrary and ancillary to the recognised contemporary methods of road maintenance which were based on the parish as the adminis trative unit. As a necessary introduction to this theme, therefore, this essay will review, with appropriate local and regional illustration, certain major features ofroad history from medieval times onwards, and against this background will then proceed to consider the history of the trusts in East Yorkshire and the roads they controlled. Based substantially on extant record material, notice will be taken of various aspects of administration and finance and of the problems ofthe trusts after c. 1840 when evidence oftheir decline and inevit able extinction was beginning to be apparent. .. * * * Like the Romans two thousand years ago, we ofthe twentieth century tend to regard a road primarily as a continuous strip ofwel1 prepared surface designed for the easy and speedy movement ofman and his transport vehicles.
