Wouldn't that have been cool? Ian Edginton. This volume also includes a short John Constantine from Vertigo Jam and another Hellblazer special; both stories have that spooky bit of darkness and black magic that I look for in this series and which Garth Ennis successfully provides most of the time. Hellblazer: The Gift. They tell completely separate stories except for the very last issue in Original Sins, which takes place between the last two issues of Spontaneous Generation. I'm going to do my best to put these in the most logical reading order, but nothing is perfect, especially as some books like Rare Cuts contain issues that span multiple other books. Sort order. There was also a lot of heavier stuff in this volume so I think it all found out a good balance. Refresh and try again. Hellblazer: Papa Midnite. Four stars just for the beautiful story about the Hurricane pilot. Death and Cigaretts concludes Hellblazer's issue run before the series was cancelled in favor John Constantine resetting John Constantine in the New 52 universe. In Fear Machine, as Hellblazer: Tainted Love Volume 7 is searching for a way to reconnect with humanity he finds himself thrown in with a group of neo-pagans with psychic abilities, who are approached by a defense contractor interested in exploiting their powers. It's an interesting story on the origins of this foe, but, as they point out at least twice in the book, this is not the same grass skirt and top hat wearing Papa Midnite that you might remember. Hellblazer: Freezes Over. And I think I would have preferred to have had Kit just discussing her life with her sister rather than a lot of people discussing things we never get to see. Heartland: The story of Kit's return to Belfast, and her night out with family and friends. Constantine's relationship, and his life in general, hits the skids with this rollercoaster set of episodes. Nevertheless, and without being affected by the inferior art quality, Tainted Love is a worthy entry in one of the darkest and best adult comic book series of the last 20 years, one that keeps proving how good Ennis is as a writer, and how these stories maintain their respective quality for the standards created ever since John was created in the pages of Swamp-Thing. Jamie Delano and Garth Ennis. Dear John: Well he's gone and done it now. Tainted Love: John tells a story from his youth, about an old friend named Seth that liked to bed girls quickly then kick them to the curb. John has to much pride and stubbornness to take anybody's pity charity. Hellblazer: Tainted Love Volume 7 that issue named The Finest Hourwe see John in an awful state of unkempt personal appearance and worsening alcohol dependence lose consciousness near a skeletal remains of a man whose final moments were shared through a dream sequence. ABSTRACT “WHY SO SERIOUS?” COMICS, FILM AND POLITICS, OR THE COMIC BOOK FILM AS THE ANSWER TO THE QUESTION OF IDENTITY AND NARRATIVE IN A POST-9/11 WORLD by Kyle Andrew Moody This thesis analyzes a trend in a subgenre of motion pictures that are designed to not only entertain, but also provide a message for the modern world after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The analysis provides a critical look at three different films as artifacts of post-9/11 culture, showing how the integration of certain elements made them allegorical works regarding the status of the United States in the aftermath of the attacks. Jean Baudrillard‟s postmodern theory of simulation and simulacra was utilized to provide a context for the films that tap into themes reflecting post-9/11 reality. The results were analyzed by critically examining the source material, with a cultural criticism emerging regarding the progression of this subgenre of motion pictures as meaningful work. “WHY SO SERIOUS?” COMICS, FILM AND POLITICS, OR THE COMIC BOOK FILM AS THE ANSWER TO THE QUESTION OF IDENTITY AND NARRATIVE IN A POST-9/11 WORLD A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of Miami University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Department of Communications Mass Communications Area by Kyle Andrew Moody Miami University Oxford, Ohio 2009 Advisor ___________________ Dr. Bruce Drushel Reader ___________________ Dr. Ronald Scott Reader ___________________ Dr. David Sholle TABLE OF CONTENTS ACKNOWLEDGMENTS .......................................................................................................................... Thesis Examination Committee: ______________________________________ Advisor Abigail McGowan, Ph.D ______________________________________ Melanie Gustafson, Ph.D ______________________________________ Chairperson Elizabeth Fenton, Ph.D ______________________________________ Dean, Graduate College Domenico Grasso, Ph.D March 22, 2013 Abstract At just under thirty years the serious academic study of American comic books is relatively young. Over the course of three decades most historians familiar with the medium have recognized that American comics, since becoming a mass-cultural product in 1939, have matured beyond their humble beginnings as a monthly publication for children. However, historians are not yet in agreement as to when the medium became mature. This thesis proposes that the medium’s maturity was cemented between 1985 and 2000, a much later point in time than existing texts postulate. The project involves the analysis of how an American mass medium, in this case the comic book, matured in the last two decades of the twentieth century. The goal is to show the interconnected relationships and factors that facilitated the maturation of the American sequential art, specifically a focus on a group of British writers working at DC Comics and Vertigo, an alternative imprint under the financial control of DC.
