It's basically Constantine and Turro sitting in a bar, being clever at each other, and Turro proposing something about a place called Highwater, and all the while a different little drama is playing out at a table behind them. The magic in Hard Time is some of my favorite in Hellblazer, it's hard to know what is being done on purpose and what is simply bleeding out of him as he loses control. Very appropriate for a comic book about John Constantine. Like yeah he always comes out on top eventually but if you go back to older stuff half the time it's basically an accident and he's generally just a huge mess. If it wasn't for the dodgy artwork it would have been a 4 star book, but i will give it a fair 3 stars. Friend Reviews. Just wish I could have gotten a little bit more work from him. • Comic Books: Superheroes/Heroines, Domestic Scenes, and Animal Images
Curriculum Units by Fellows of the Yale-New Haven Teachers Institute 1980 Volume II: Art, Artifacts, and Material Culture Comic Books: Superheroes/heroines, Domestic Scenes, and Animal Images Curriculum Unit 80.02.03 by Patricia Flynn The idea of developing a unit on the American Comic Book grew from the interests and suggestions of middle school students in their art classes. There is a need on the middle school level for an Art History Curriculum that will appeal to young people, and at the same time introduce them to an enduring art form. The history of the American Comic Book seems appropriately qualified to satisfy that need. Art History involves the pursuit of an understanding of man in his time through the study of visual materials. It would seem reasonable to assume that the popular comic book must contain many sources that reflect the values and concerns of the culture that has supported its development and continued growth in America since its introduction in 1934 with the publication of Famous Funnies , a group of reprinted newspaper comic strips. From my informal discussions with middle school students, three distinctive styles of comic books emerged as possible themes; the superhero and the superheroine, domestic scenes, and animal images. These themes historically repeat themselves in endless variations. The superhero/heroine in the comic book can trace its ancestry back to Greek, Roman and Nordic mythology. Ancient mythologies may be considered as a way of explaining the forces of nature to man. Examples of myths may be found world-wide that describe how the universe began, how men, animals and all living things originated, along with the world’s inanimate natural forces.

  • The Annihilaton Theory
THE ANNIHILATION THEORY Question #1: What does the word “destruction” in 2 Thess 1:9 mean? Paul writes, “These will pay the penalty of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power . .” (2 Thess 1:9). Answer: There are four primary words that are used to convey the concept of destruction. They are: olethros (“corruption, destruction”); olethreuo (“to corrupt, destroy”); olethreutes (“destroyer”); and exolothreuo (“to destroy completely”). • Olethros means “corruption,” especially “death,” or “that which brings corruption.” It is quite common in the Greek Old Testament (LXX); the prophets often use it to describe eschatological “destruction” (Jer 48:3). The sense is clearly eschatological in two New Testament instances: In 1 Thess 5:3, at the time of the day of the Lord, destruction will come upon those in darkness. In 2 Thess 1:9, eternal destruction will come on those who reject the gospel when Christ is revealed from heaven. In 1 Tim 6:9, the conscience of those who seek wealth is seared and they are thus in danger of falling into temptations that will plunge them into utter ruin. The point is rather different in 1 Cor 5:5, where Paul seems to be saying that physical destruction (i.e., discipline or death) will follow when the incestuous man in the Corinthian church is delivered over to Satan. • Olethreuo is a term that means, “to corrupt,” “to destroy.” Philo uses it for the corruption of the soul. It occurs 18 times in the LXX in its usual sense. The only New Testament instance is in Heb 11:28, where by faith Moses sprinkles the blood so that the “destroyer” might not touch his people.

  • Hell: Never, Forever, Or Just for Awhile?
TMSJ 9/2 (Fall 1998) 129-145 HELL: NEVER, FOREVER, OR JUST FOR AWHILE? Richard L. Mayhue Senior Vice President and Dean Professor of Theology and Pastoral Ministries The plethora of literature produced in the last two decades on the basic nature of hell indicates a growing debate in evangelicalism that has not been experienced since the latter half of the nineteenth century. This introductory article to the entire theme issue of TMSJ sets forth the context of the question of whether hell involves conscious torment forever in Gehenna for unbelievers or their annihilation after the final judgment. It discusses historical, philosophical, lexical, contextual, and theological issues that prove crucial to reaching a definitive biblical conclusion. In the end, hell is a conscious, personal torment forever; it is not “just for awhile” before annihilation after the final judgment (conditional immortality) nor is its final retribution “never” (universalism). * * * * * A few noted evangelicals such as Clark Pinnock,1 John Stott,2 and John Wenham3 have in recent years challenged the doctrine of eternal torment forever in hell as God’s final judgment on all unbelievers. James Hunter, in his landmark “sociological interpretation” of evangelicalism, notes that “. it is clear that there is a measurable degree of uneasiness within this generation of Evangelicals with the notion of an eternal damnation.”4 The 1989 evangelical doctrinal caucus “Evangelical Affirmations” surprisingly debated this issue. “Strong disagreements did surface over the position of annihilationism, a view that holds that unsaved souls 1Clark H.
