DECREE of PROMULGATION Dear High School Priestly Administrators, Principals, Religion Department Chairpersons and Religion Teach DECREE OF PROMULGATION Dear High School Priestly Administrators, Principals, Religion Department Chairpersons and Religion Teachers: The following is an application of the United States Bishops’ document Doctrinal Elements of a Curriculum Framework for the Development of Catechetical Materials for Young People of High School Age (henceforth “Curriculum Framework”) for all high schools within the diocese of Covington. It is to be implemented one year at a time, beginning in the fall of 2014 with grade nine. This new course of study follows the Curriculum Framework very closely. However, a few adaptations have been made. Most of the courses have been given different titles than found in the Curriculum Framework. As well, while the Curriculum Framework contains six Core semester-length courses, our course of study contains seven core courses. (These seven core courses are to be taken in sequence.) Our seventh core course was created by moving a course on Christian vocations from the Elective category of the Curriculum Framework to our required Core Courses category. This seventh core course is titled, “The Call of Christ: On Christian Vocation.” In addition to a standard treatment of Christian vocation, this course is also to include a thorough study of the Theology of the Body. CURRICULUM ELECTIVES This curriculum course of study allows for one elective course placed in either the junior or senior year. This elective course is to be chosen from the group of Electives given in Curriculum Framework. This policy must be followed in its entirety. THE STRUCTURE OF OUR COURSE OF STUDY DOCUMENT To make the contents of the Curriculum Framework a bit more user friendly for teachers, we have provided a list of “Objectives” for each course. The objectives list for our seven core courses end with a list of “Challenges.” The challenges have been formulated from the Challenges section provided in the Curriculum Framework for each course (the challenges provided are not intended to be exhaustive and teachers are encouraged to formulate additional ones). Teachers are likewise encouraged to formulate challenges for the elective courses from the ones provided in the Curriculum Framework content outlines for the elective courses. The purpose of the Challenges is to provide an apologetical element to each course. This is to help equip our students to effectively handle common questions and critiques, and to strengthen their confidence in the reasonableness of our Catholic Faith in the midst of the many challenges encountered in our contemporary culture. Each list of objectives is then followed by the full doctrinal content outline reproduced verbatim from the Curriculum Framework. Religion department chairpersons and teachers are asked to familiarize themselves with these full outlines from the Curriculum Framework and to make sure their course content is consistent with them. TEXTBOOKS The use of textbooks designed in light of the Curriculum Framework will be essential to a successful implementation of this new course of study. Thus far, the most complete series is the Didache semester editions series published by Midwest Theological Forum. For more information go to www.theologicalforum.org (make sure you are looking at the semester editions, rather than the complete course editions). Therefore, in keeping up with our diocesan policy, a textbook series has already been selected for you to use in our high schools. This textbook series is the Didache semester editions published by Midwest Theological Forum. The Didache semester textbook editions series is listed by the USCCB as being in conformity with the Catechism of the Catholic Church. To check out on the conformity of this series, please, visit www.usccb.org. I find it reasonable as your bishop to replace the current Didache complete course editions series after ten years of usage in our high schools. Therefore, the new religion textbook editions series must be implemented between 2014 and 2017; ten years after the Didache complete course editions were implemented. The High Schools will have complete freedom in deciding the time frame within this deadline: one year at a time, two years at a time, or all at once, etc. In this Holy Year of Faith, on Thursday, August 15, 2013, the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, I promulgate the Religious Education Curriculum for Young People of High School Age manual and urge high school pastoral administrators, principals, Religion department chairpersons, and Religion teachers to implement and utilize them in the most appropriate manner in each School. Through their study of the Bible they will come to encounter the living Word of God, Jesus Christ. In the course they will learn about the Bible, authored by God through Inspiration, and its value to people throughout the world. If they have not been taught this earlier, they will learn how to read the Bible and will become familiar with the major sections of the Bible and the books included in each section. The students will pay particular attention to the Gospels, where they may grow to know and love Jesus Christ more personally. (Note: At the discretion of each school, this course may begin with a basic introduction to Catholicism.) Core Course 1 objectives: I. HOW DO WE KNOW ABOUT GOD? Distinguish how God is revealed through natural and divine revelation 3. Compare and contrast the ways that God is revealed through natural and divine revelation 4. Justify how sacred scripture is an outgrowth of God’s revelation through Tradition 5. Explain how Apostolic tradition connects us to the person of Jesus II. ABOUT SACRED SCRIPTURE Primary objectives – students will… Covered by teacher Demonstrated by students 1. Characterize the authorship of Scripture as both divine and human 2. Describe the Catholic understanding of biblical inspiration 3. Summarize how the Bible came to be 4. Utilize Sacred Scripture in a variety of ways for personal and communal prayer 5. Describe the purpose and steps of Lectio divina III. UNDERSTANDING SCRIPTURE Primary objectives – students will… Covered by teacher Demonstrated by students 1. Explain the role of the teaching office of the church in the authentic interpretation of Scripture 2. Apply the four senses of Scripture (literal, allegorical, moral, and anagogical) to their daily lives 3. Articulate and apply the Church’s criteria for the personal reading of Scripture 4. The Catholic Church teaches that Divine Revelation has been given to us in two forms: “written” (Sacred Scripture) and “passed on” (Sacred Tradition). Describe one or two specific sources where one can encounter this “Sacred Tradition.” 3. Explain what it means to read Scripture in light of the “analogy of faith.” The following is the full content outline from the US Bishops’ Curriculum Framework. The title of Core Course 1 in the Curriculum Framework is “The Revelation of Jesus Christ in Scripture”: I. How Do We Know About God? A. The thirst and desire for God (Catechism of the Catholic Church [CCC], nos. 27-30, 44-45, 1718). 1. Within all people there is a longing for God. 2. That longing itself is from God, who desires and initiates a relationship with each person. 3. Only in God can lasting joy and peace be found in this life and in the next. B. God revealed in many ways. 1. Natural Revelation (CCC, nos. 32-34). a.     DECREES OF PROMULGATION CANON 284 On November 18, 1998, the Latin Rite de iure members of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops approved complementary legislation for canon 284 of the Code of Canon Law for the Latin Rite dioceses of the United States. The action was granted recognitio by the Congregation for Bishops in accord with article 82 of the Apostolic Constitution Pastor Bonus and issued by Decree of the Congregation for Bishops signed by His Eminence Lucas Cardinal Moreira Neves, Prefect, and His Excellency Most Reverend Franciscus Monterisi, Secretary, and dated September 29, 1999. The National Conference of Catholic Bishops, in accord with the prescriptions of canon 284, hereby decrees that without prejudice to the provisions of canon 288, clerics are to dress in conformity with their sacred calling. In liturgical rites, clerics shall wear the vesture prescribed in the proper liturgicad books. Outside liturgical functions, a black suit and Roman collar are the usual attire for priests. The use of the cassock is at the discretion of the cleric. In the case of religious clerics, the determinations of their proper institutes or societies are to be observed with regard to wearing the religious habit. Despite being eclipsed by the power of the emperors in the first century BC, the men who made up this order continued to act as the keepers of Roman civilization for the next four hundred years, maintaining their traditions even beyond the disappearance of an emperor in the West. Despite their longevity, the members of the senatorial aristocracy faced an existential crisis following the Ostrogothic conquest of the Italian peninsula, when the forces of the Byzantine emperor Justinian I invaded their homeland to contest its ownership. Considering the role they played in the later Roman Empire, the disappearance of the Roman senatorial aristocracy following this conflict is a seminal event in the history of Italy and Western Europe, as well as Late Antiquity. Two explanations have been offered to explain the subsequent disappearance of the Roman senatorial aristocracy. To All of the Faithful of the Archdiocese of Denver The Pastoral Handbook constitutes the Particular Law of the Archdiocese of Denver that, in conjunction with the 1983 Code of Canon Law and other Universal and Particular Laws, contains the norms by which the Archdiocese of Denver is governed. From time to time sections of the Pastoral Handbook are changed or updated. After proper consultation with the Presbyteral Council, with this Decree, and its Appendix A, I, the Archbishop of Denver, Most Rev. Samuel J. Aquila, hereby, Establish and Promulgate changes to the Pastoral Handbook recorded in Appendix A, such that these changes shall constitute particular law (c. 391) for the Archdiocese of Denver. According to canon 20, the previously promulgated norms in the sections of the Pastoral Handbook, which have been reordered by Appendix "A" are abrogated. Moreover, in accord with canon 8 §2, this particular legislation shall take effect on the 1st of July 2019, the Feast of Junipero Serra, everything to the contrary, notwithstanding. Promulgation shall occur through its written communication to all clergy in the July priest mailing. Concurrently, it shall be posted on the Archdiocese of Denver’s official website (archden.org/pastoral-handbook/) and, subsequently, on DenverCatholic.org. Vidin County, as defined by the Ottoman Provincial Regulation of 1864, is the area that includes the districts of Vidin (the administrative center), ‛Adliye (modern-day Kula), Belgradcık (Belogradchik), Berkofça (Bergovitsa), İvraca (Vratsa), Rahova (Rahovo), and Lom (Lom), all of which are located in modern-day Bulgaria. My focus is mostly on the post-1864 period primarily due to the document utilized for this dissertation: the copy registers of the county administrative council in Vidin. Doing a close reading of these copy registers together with other primary and secondary sources this dissertation analyzes the politics of local administration in Vidin as a case study to understand the Ottoman governmentality in the second half of the nineteenth century. The main thesis of this study contends that the local inhabitants of Vidin effectively used the institutional framework of local administration ii in this period of transformation in order to devise strategies that served their interests. This work distances itself from an understanding of the nineteenth-century local politics as polarized between a dominating local government trying to impose unprecedented reforms designed at the imperial center on the one hand, and an oppressed but nevertheless resistant people, rebelling against the insensitive policies of the state on the other.
