Singer George Michael of Wham! Fame Dies at 53 (Video) LONDON (Reuters) – British singer George Michael, who became one of the pop idols of the 1980s with Wham! and then forged a career as a successful solo artist with sometimes sexually provocative lyrics, died at his home in England on Sunday. He was 53. British singer George Michael performs on stage during his “Symphonica” tour concert in Vienna September 4, 2012. REUTERS/Heinz-Peter Bader In the mid-1980s, “Wham! was one of the most successful pop duos ever, ahead even of Simon & Garfunkel, with singles like”Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go”, & “Careless Whisper”, “Last Christmas” and “The Edge of Heaven”. “It is with great sadness that we can confirm our beloved son, brother and friend George passed away peacefully at home over the Christmas period,” his publicist said in a statement. “The family would ask that their privacy be respected at this difficult and emotional time. There will be no further comment at this stage,” the statement said. British police said Michael’s death was “unexplained but not suspicious.” FILE PHOTO: George Michael performs in concert at the Forum during his “Live Global Tour” in Inglewood, California June 25, 2008. • George Michael and His Last Christmas
MUSIC George Michael and his last Christmas DECEMBER 26, 2016 16:45 IST UPDATED: DECEMBER 26, 2016 16:45 IST City-based singer-songwriter REGI VARGHESE talks of growing up to the sound of Wham! in the Eighties Songs you’ve heard in your youth have a habit of hiding in some dark corner of your mind and popping up at the most unexpected times. I was at a Christmas dinner the day before, listening to a live band playing music from the 80s. I had grown up with a lot of the songs, but the one that stuck that night was George Michael’s ‘Last Christmas’. I found myself whistling this as I drove home, and I was still humming the tune when I switched on the television to the news that George Michael was dead. Throughout the day, ticker tapes at the bottom of every international and Indian news channel carried the news. I got calls from my band mates, saying they would be adding a few George Michael songs for their gig at the Boat Club on New Year’s eve. George Michael burst on to the music scene as one half of the boy band Wham!. The band’s first album, Fantastic, reached No. 1 in the U.K. in 1983 and produced a series of top 10 singles like ‘Young Guns’, ‘Wham! Rap’ and ‘Club Tropicana’. Their second album, Make it Big, reached No. 1 on the U.S. album charts and they had four chart-busting singles — ‘Wake Me Up before you Go-Go’, ‘Freedom’, ‘Everything She Wants’ and ‘Careless Whisper’.

British pop star George Michael dies aged 53 ritish pop star George Michael, who rose to fame with the band Wham! and sold more than 100 mil- Blion albums in his career, has died aged 53, his publi- cist said on Sunday. "It is with great sadness that we can confirm our beloved son, brother and friend George passed away peacefully at home over the Christmas peri- od," the publicist said in a statement. Thames Valley Police said the ambulance service had attended a property in Goring in Oxfordshire, where the singer lived, at 1342 GMT on Sunday and a 53-year-old man was confirmed dead at the scene. "At this stage the death is being treated as unexplained but not suspicious. A post-mortem will be undertaken in due course," the police said. Singer Elton John published a picture of himself with Michael on his Instagram account. "I am in deep shock. I have lost a beloved friend - the kindest, most generous soul and a brilliant artist," the British star wrote. Madonna posted a video of herself presenting Michael with an award and wrote: "Farewell my Friend! Another Great Artist leaves us." Michael was due to release a documentary in 2017 after a period of living as a virtual recluse in which he hit the headlines for a series of bizarre incidents linked to drugs.

pete paphides 533 For the first time, almost all of my favourite bands were past entities. It bothered me that bands split up, but then all change bothered me. How do people change and not mind the scrutiny that comes with it? How can they leave the house and ride out the risk of ridicule or failure? In the case of ABBA, Japan and The Teardrop Explodes, there hadn’t really been a choice. These groups simply couldn’t continue. But with the Jam, it was different. I’d never seen anyone control the narrative like Paul Weller did. It seemed almost incomprehensible to me that you might sacrifice perhaps three or four more years of success in order to ensure that when the time came to end it, you ended it when your stock was at its highest. And not only that, but when you did, you did so by explaining your reasons in the words of your farewell single. All the things that I care about (are packed into one punch) All the things that I’m not sure about (are sorted out at once) In keeping with this emphatic gesture of selfdetermination, the Top of the Pops performance of ‘Beat Surrender’ saw Weller even go to the trouble of reconfiguring the way his group presented them selves. With more than a nod to the setup of sixties pop shows such as Ready Steady Go!, Weller dispensed with his guitar and stood on a platform at the back of the stage. Beside him was the first signing to his new label Respond, wedgehaired seventeenyearold school girl Tracie, whose vocal was as high in the mix as his own.
